Weir: "Masculinity and Femininity is Something that's Very Old Fashioned."

Yesterday, U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir held a press conference to respond to the offensive comments that some Quebecois TV sportscasters made about him this week.

Weir has taken a lot of flack within the gay community in the past for not going "officially on the record" about his sexual orientation. Who knows what his reasons are for that bit of coyness, but it is clearly not from cowardice. I think given what he has to say in this press conference, no one within the GLBT community can fault him for not "representing."

The question is, what is he representing? To me, it seems as if he's trying to go beyond "gay" and represent a post-gay sensibility. Some of his comments here are pretty controversial and I think might be challenged both by traditionalist heteros and also many within the GLBT community.

Is Weir correct when he says "masculinity and femininity is something that's very old fashioned?" I'm not sure I can agree with that, but then I'm from an older generation of gay men. So maybe I'm old fashioned, and it's time to get with Weir's worldview.
