Your Asshat of the Week: Two-thirds of "Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning"
Is it just me, or do these guys seem pleased with themselves for winning AfterElton.com's first ever Asshat of the Week? For all the details on how this dastardly duo bested the other challengers, read on! Why they won: Rob & Arnie went far beyond the usual gay-baiting crassness one often finds in radio shock jocks when they pontificated on how to deal with transgender children. Here are some of Rob and Arnie's pearls of parenting wisdom:
The audio clip of Rob & Arnie's tirade had been available via their website, but they wisely chose to pull the clip this week. What is still available is their self-serving response to the uproar. You can listen to that here, but I wouldn't really recommend it. What they won: In addition to the coveted asshat crown, Rob & Arnie take home some valuable parting gifts in the form of lost advertising revenue. Several admirable companies have chosen to pull all their advertising from Rob & Arnie's radio station KRCQ in response to their repugnant transgender tirade and subsequent non-apology. Those companies, all worthy of your support, are Chipotle Mexican Grill, the Sonic Drive-In restaurant chain, and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, which is responsible for 40+ consumer brands including 7-UP, Country Time, Crush, Hawaiian Punch, Mott's, Orangina, Welch's and Yoo-hoo. I don't know about you, but a Sonic cheeseburger washed down with a Yoo-hoo sounds really good right about now! How they won: Rob & Arnie took nearly two-thirds of the votes this week (63%). Their closest competitor was Bill O"Reilly, who received 22% of the vote for being morally complicit in the murder of Dr. George Tiller. When you can resoundingly beat Bill O'Reilly in an asshat contest then you know you're truly heinous. So way to go, Rob & Arnie!
Just a few write-in votes this week. The most common being "All of the Above" and Barack Obama. We'll be back with another smackdown on Wednesday, when your votes will determine which blowhard, homophobe, harridan and/or self-righteous harpie will inherit the asshat crown next week! These two people
are so absolutely disgusting.
This is not just discrimination against the LGBT community, its bordering on hate speech. Imagine the parent listening to this who might be convinced to try it on their kid. I shudder for Rob & Arnie's own kids, what poor and repugnant dads they have.
I truly believe they crossed a line. Many people toe the line, like Bill O' Reilly, but this is one step short of hate crime.
I hope they're taken off the air and wish all their remaining advertisers would pull out as well.
They really need to be taught something. Ignorance does not excuse their comments.
Sick, that's what they are. Sick.
:)
I am at least happy to hear that advertisers wisely pulled funding from the bigots. Corporate responsibility is a major issue and to be associated with such derogatory and inflammatory language should not sit well with any of them. Notice too, that all of the above mentioned companies have comprehensive policies regarding LGBQT employees and their families. Way to go!
Gay and lesbian rights are not special rights in any way. It isn't "special" to be free from discrimination. It is an ordinary, universal entitlement of citizenship."
FCC
um.....does the FCC only fine people on television???
i'm confused as to what the FCC actually does. i dont get why swearing on TV can get you fined, but saying things like "i'd hit my kid with a shoe..." and so forth is ok....
i dont get why things like this are allowed on radio.
YAY!!!
I'm glad they got it where it hurts most, in the moneybag
Still not enough though. They should be fired
Now I don't feel guilty anymore about the can of Crush I had today :D
(I intend to gain a few pounds to support the cause)
The rightful winners
People like these are exactly why I always change the radio station when I hear talking. DJ's, especially on rock stations, tend to do little more than revel in misogynist, homophobic, all-around bigoted dumbassery.

Good!
I'm so glad to read about those companies pulling their advertisement from the show.
I can only wish the same will happen one day to bigger birds than these two asshats.
I'm glad that sponsership
Thank God for Dawn...
Well, I did listen to the non-apology, and I have to say, Dawn says a lot of amazing stuff. She really sounds cool. Sadly, Rob and Arnie are boneheads. But have to give Dawn props.

Being insulting
To peoples race no matter what they said makes you just as bad as them.
Yes you may be angry as we all are but hate breeds hate.
Unfortunately....
As admirable as Dawn is
Which is which? Although
Which is which? Although the main guy talking was repellent in every way with his views and the way he kept making an incorrect beep noise every time Dawn spoke and claiming his opinion was fact I have to say that the other guy laughing annoyed me even more. Moronic hyena, at least the other guy has his own opinons, standing behind the strongest guy and laughing behind his hateful spewing is even more repellent and weak and any person who deals with being trans is a stronger braver person than him.
I esp. hated the guy saying it was attention seeking, what! Is that why so many people struggle to tell anybody? that i'd guess they usually try and pass. and I can see an issue with children making any big decision but I mean a seeing a child so uncomfortable when a documentary crew is shown photos of them before they wore skirts, what else does that show? and if someone still feels a certain way at puberty thats a good place to make the change cus its harder to transition after that I hear, to pass anyways. and i've seen a few docu's and sometimes you can't even tell a person is trans esp. if they're children, they're not affecting others. grr

Good for Chipotle, Sonic, and Dr. Pepper/Snapple
As deplorable as Rob and Arnie's comments are, the first amendment supports their right to make them. It also supports our right to denounce them, and the right of businesses to pull their support from their program. Thank you, Dennis, for saying that Bill O'Reilly was morally complicit in Dr. Tiller's murder rather than legally complicit. We should be able to condemn things said on this (apparently) idiotic radio show and O'Reilly's show without calling the people involved criminals and concluding that the government should go after them and force them not to say things to which we object.
The right way to speak out against hateful people is to vote with your wallet. So by all means, let's do so. I'm off to Sonic for a burger and a Dr. Pepper now.
People is Glass houses...
Yes 1st amendment covers Rob & Arnie
Daniel - the quotes above are all that is left because the Rob, Arnie & Dawn in the Morning show pulled the audio of that episode from their website. Hmmm, wonder why?
At any rate it is hard for anyone to complain the quotes are taken out of context when Rob & Arnie have themselves removed the context.
As for 1st amendment, I totally agree that these people have the right to say whatever the hell they want on their show. Yes, it might depress the hell out of me and many others but they can do it, the same way Bill O'Reilly could effectively paint an assassins' bullseye on Dr. George Tiller.
There may not be any legal recourse in these situations, but "throwing stones" as you put it, and applauding advertisers who choose to pull out of this show seems to me to be a very healthy thing.
