Adam Lambert's Big Year is Just Getting Started
“I think it’s attention getting. At least I hope it is.” Adam Lambert’s talking about his album cover, but he could easily be talking about his life this past year. We’ve devoted untold pixels to him here at AfterElton.com since his Idol audition, and we haven’t actually been lucky enough to talk to him yet. In reality, it’s just beginning, and it officially kicks off this Sunday of at the American Music Awards. Adam’s is the most anticipated performance, possibly even more so than the Lady GaGa. And delightful though she is, she has me a bit worried about seeing her live since the blood thing at the MTV Music Awards. As for Adam, he’s got ten dancers, costumes, a band, and a vision. And if the pictures from his video shoot this week were any indication, his vision is sexy. Yes folks, this is the beginning of Adam’s career, post Idol. He's one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive. His album, For Your Entertainment, drops this coming Monday. Wednesday he’s doing a concert in New York City for Good Morning America. He’s going to be one of Barbara Walters Most Fascinating People of 2009. He’s one of the featured artists on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve that Ryan Seacrest is hosting in New York City. He’s going to be everywhere. Seriously, go check your front door right now. Billboard Magazine sat down with Adam several times as we built to this moment, and they’ve collected them in a really neat launch piece for Adam. People, including Adam, keep comparing him to David Bowie or Freddie Mercury. But listening to Adam talk (as opposed to sing), I’m reminded more of Madonna. Nobody ever said Madonna was a great singer, not even Madonna herself. But she’s a stellar marketer, a mesmerizing performer, and it’s served her well for nearly 30 years. I see that in Adam, but he’s also got the pipes to back it up. He’s infinitely confident and bristles at the idea that the Idol machine is making him dance like a puppet to their song. This is no kid; he’s 27, toured with Wicked, and has been out since he turned 18. If you tell him he came out in Rolling Stone, he’ll laugh in your face. There was the unpleasantness this week with the editor of Out. They’ve each had their say on the subject. The whole thing is unfortunate in many ways, because neither of them meant exactly what got said. But they each had a product to sell. Out managed some notoriety. Adam managed to look in charge of his own image. It was a ripple from a pebble bouncing off the ocean liner that is the S.S. Adam Lambert. When I reviewed his album, I had some concerns that when taken individually, the tracks were a little derivative of other artists. Taken as a whole, those concerns melt away. It’s a lot like Adam himself, take elements about him individually: theatrical, glam, gay, guyliner, rocker. It causes some concern to his marketability. Taken as a whole, you get Adam Lambert, artist. t/y to reader Crawfish Po Boy for the tip on Billboard Submitted by on Sat, 2009-11-21 11:51. |

Excellent post!
It's great
Lambert Roars!!!
For your Entertainment....
to be honest
I dont really see where all the hype is coming from. I do like his voice (in fact i think its very nice), but i dont think much of his style of music at all. Also I dont think he is especially good looking, and other than his voice itself, i dont see any appeal. But for months now i cant do anything (even browse this website) without being bombarded with news about adam lambert.
It has me wondering if the only reason he is recieving so much attention is because he is gay. This realy upsets me because i dont think sexuality should have anything to do with fame.
Of course this is only my oppinion, and i am sure there are alot of people who strongly disagree with me. But I still dont see why he is reciving so much attention without it being based on his sexual orientation
You're right, i think he
You're right, i think he does get a boost out of being gay. But this just makes it easier for future gay artists to be viewed more objectively.
Like any other novelty, first minority to_____ gets that extra attention until everyone gets over it. There have already been lots of gay singers, but there's an openly gay one now.
Adam is talented, let's see if he has staying power. Meanwhile, just enjoy. Gay Card holders get a different perspective.
but
There have been alot of opnly gay musicians already. Lets not forget that Adam wasnt always openly gay. In retrospect it seems he kept it hidden while he was on a 'family show'. He let on just enough to keep every one guessing if he was or was not gay. it wasnt until after american idol that he came out. It seems he used the whole mistery to his appeal, and only came out after the show, once he had a large gay fan base. I just dont think that it should ever have become a contributing factor towards his fame. And I think one of the main reasons that it is, is because he was associated with a mainstream american TV show, and happened to stir up a little controversy along the way.
of course, thats just the way i see it. Im sure there are alot of genuine fans who love his music. but i doubt all of them are
He's never in the closet in
He's never in the closet in the first place, if you ask me, a fan who followed him from the beginning of his whirlwind journey into now.
When asked about the pictures, he never denied it. He just never said it out that he's gay. To him, probably at that particularly period, he felt that who he is should not matter. He wanted people to focus on his singing, not his sexuality, not his private life. Was that to garner votes? Could be. But he said that he thought he wouldn't last in the show already. So, that question is pretty much moot.
And to those people who are already fans of him in the show already know that he's gay. Maybe it's me. When he auditioned for Idol and he sang Michael Jackson's Rock With You and then he sang Bohemian Rhapsody, I knew he's gay. My gaydar beeped so loudly it hurts my head. It's not the songs that he chose. I just knew.
And then I went to YouTube, and people who were curious about this Adam Lambert, probably searched for him as well, and he did mention that kissing girls are not his preference. If that doesn't show that he's, well, gay, I don't know what would.
The only thing was he never said it on print, on TV, that he's gay. But like I said, it's stupid to not think that he's gay when pictures of him french-kissing his ex-boyfriend and that Fox douchebag kept showing them on national TV.
And he even subtly sang songs that do not have the word "girl". Even if there is the word "girl" in the songs he chose (like Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin), he would change it to "baby".
And it could partly be because of his sexuality that some of his fans paired him up with his roommate, Kris Allen. Those two are the most good-looking ones in the show. Not that Kris Allen didn't help in the (b)romance of Kradam. He has a lot of PDAs with Adam.
Anyways, putting the (b)romance with Kris aside, he never hid himself. I never understood why people think that he kept his sexuality hidden during the show.
And trust me, most of his fans, do love him for his music. I know a lot since I'm part of the "fandom". It's not his sexuality. It's not important to us. It's his music. You do not know how many of us just want him to succeed because we've heard of his struggle. And when we see him now, we're just so happy for him.
Most of Adam's hype is
I think the majority of his
I think the majority of his female fans don't care that he is gay (in fact I have no doubt that many straight girls would prefer it if he was straight).
While I think the fact that he is gay definitely gets him exra attention, he has so many devoted fans because he is a fantastic singer and performer, and he's extremely sexy. More than once I've heard it said that he was the only reason some people watched his season of AI. Myself included, actually. He's different than anyone else on that show, and so he attracted a lot of attention.
In short: there are many reasons for his fame, and his sexuality is a big one, perhaps, but not the only one by any means.
True...
The "Is he or isn't he?" debate had a lot to do with his getting-- and keeping-- attention during his stint on American Idol. I'm sure his "coming out" was interesting to a lot of people, too. But I can't imagine someone would become a fan and buy his records and go to his concerts just because he's gay!
His orientation definitely helped the spotlight turn to him, but it has nothing to do with whether or not it stays on him.
"Go, or go ahead and surprise me." -- Rufus Wainwright
Its the rush release affect...
Some of the songs are okay, especially "Fever" which is really good. However, I have to agree with the lack of cohesion and the only thing I can find fault is probably the short amount of time he spent making this album. Let's not forget that he started this back in April/May.
Compare this to say Bjork or Goldfrapp (sorry for the random comparisions, first ones that popped into my head!) who spend years working on an album. Even when they're finished, sometimes they believe they could have spent another three or fourth months on it.
Hopefully with his next album, he'll have enough time to do just that... create something breathtaking and well-crafted. Otherwise we'll get awkward lyrics layed with somewhat generic beats like this album is starting to sound like.

Hedonism at its best... or worst...
There's a 3 Star(Out of 5)Review
Of Adam's album on the front page of today's(Saturday Nov. 21)Los Angeles Times Calendar section.
"Oh please! It's ten days bitching for every two days bliss with these two." Simone on Roman & Deniz "Alles was Zahlt"/"All That Matters"
I'm a fan. I'm a huge fan.
I'm a fan. I'm a huge fan. I've known from the beginning of Idol that he's going to be a star. He just has that something that we've not seen for quite sometime.
Other than the fact that he is the only person we know of now that starts as an openly gay man, every generation (possibly) has a superstar (Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie). My generation (teens to 20s) didn't have one yet (no, please do not mention Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake at me cos I will seriously cut a bitch). Until a certain Adam Lambert comes along.
People can see that he is IT. He has IT. This IT not many has it. Look at the people I've listed above - Elvis, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, and others like Prince, Madonna, he has that thing that just makes us want him - want to get to know him, want to watch him, want to listen to him. And unlike many new artistes in the music industry nowadays, he has talent. He has mad talent. I do not know how he can reach those really high notes.
People like Greg Wells, Ryan Tedder, Brian May, Rob Cavallo, as songwriters, producers and artistes, can see that Adam could be a superstar. Could be like Madonna with a talent to boot. That is why these people fanboy and/or collaborate with him in his debut album.
It also helps that he has been in Hollywood for many years before he got his break. He knew how difficult it is to get where he is right now. He knew that the music industry is a business. He has a business mindset. He knows how to market himself, he knows what it takes to get people to talk. And it also helps that he's really good in interviews and a really smart man.
What also helps is his personality. He knows when to be serious and when to have fun. He has confidence and it shows in the way he talks. But sometimes, you can see that he himself does not believe that all these is happening to him.
His debut album may be some fruit salad with so many varieties of things put together. But this album took only a few months to put together. And come to think of it, it is a good idea to have everything.
He has to sell his first album. He needs a lot of sales to make it out there for real, to prove that he can stand on his own against people like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pink, Daughtry, etc. To do that, he needs to blend everything together. That is why this album, you can't choose one track that is your favourite. Well, at least for me. I love every single song on that album. You like Lady Gaga? Well, you have that. You like Queen? Well you have that too. You like Pink? Well, you have that. You like Daughtry? Well, you have that sound too. So, when mainstream people pick up that album just to kinda know what the hype is all about if they don't really get it, then this album won't disappoint. He has everything for everyone.
But like you said, Ed, that's Adam. He's a chameleon. He can blend everywhere and to everything.
Voice
It's a bit disheartening reading the comments.
It's not because he is gay.
It's because he has talent and a very rare voice. For one thing he has a massive range, he can slip in and out of different genres : rock, pop, musicals. He can also do a lot with the tonality of his voice : hard, soft, middle. It's quite impressive really. Maybe I am naive, but I believe that that is why peeps in the music industry is so excited about him. Major music players like Pink, Lady GaGa and Muse don't give him songs because he is gay.
On the album he is doing very much the same that he did on AI. A fast song, then a ballad or slow song. Always alternating and showing what awesome things he can do musically.
I do agree, he is very much selling an image as well. But to me, that is just part of who he is. Just glad that I happen to like what he is offering. haha.
It's about his voice
Yeah, I really don’t get how anyone thinks he wasn’t openly gay. He has always been out. Like someone said, he never denied his sexuality and he did say “kissing girls is not my preference” in top 13 I believe? But I don’t even see a reason why a person who’s on a talent show should discuss his sexuality. It has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with his talent as a singer. He came out to the PUBLIC right after the show ended in the RS issue. And to most of his fans it was funny, because we had always known he was gay. And to those of you who think his only appeal is his gayness, well think again. I for one don’t support artists based on their sexuality. I support them if I genuinely love the art they sell. He happens to have an amazing voice. He can sing any type of music: rock, acoustic, dance, ballads and so on, and like producer Rob Cavallo said, he can sing every note on the guitar. And that’s rare.
As for the album. Some say it isn’t cohesive enough. As a person who likes all types of music, this album is more than I could’ve hoped for. It shows he can sing all types of music. And considering that he was on the Idol tour from July to September, and started really working on the album after that, it's damn amazing.
Listening to the streaming
Listening to the streaming version of the FYE album, it's like a really good mix CD. I'm not someone who places a ton of importance in the cohesiveness of the album as a whole in this age of the ipod. And I still think it flows fairly well. While there are 2 tracks that I'm not crazy about, I'm not instantly hitting the skip button with them either. And there were 5 that I fell in love with instantly. The remainder are enjoyable, and quickly growing on me. For an album put together in a few months by a brand new artist while simultaneously touring 50 cities, I'm awfully impressed. It's rare that I instantly like more than 3 or 4 tracks off an album from established artists I already like. I'm pleasantly surprised with this result.
Also, from what I understand from the reviewers that got advance copies, the sound quality once you get the actual CD gives the songs more richness and layers of instrumentation that are particularly beautiful in the slower tracks, and add some vocal complexity to more uptempo songs that isn't really audible over the web on a crap computer speaker. I'm really looking forward to plunking down my money Monday so I can get that higher quality sound.
I get that his voice isn't for everyone. I think sound is a lot like color or taste. I'm a graphic designer, and at the beginning of my career I discovered the hard way that people don't actually all see color the same way. A color that I see as blue, and I know is officially classified as blue, a client may see as purple. And he HATES purple, and prefers green. That's cool. Same goes for taste buds. The taste bud for a specific bitter taste is actually genetic, some people have it, some people will just never ever taste it. I kind of think of Adam's voice like that. For some of us, it hits a sweet spot in the brain that has us punching replay on our ipods like demented lab mice pushing a lever for that delicious treat. And yet others hear it and are like, WHAT? What the hell is that? I don't ever want to hear it again. LOL. Just a matter of personal tastes.
I also get that some people don't care for his style, and are sick of hearing about him. But really, the internet does not equal real life. It's sometimes shocking to me as someone who spend almost every working moment on the computer, and a slightly disturbing amount of my free time as well, but TONS of people are not on the internet. Several of my family members do not work with or own a computer, the horror! I think because web sites have discovered that the name Adam Lambert brings on an avalanche of clicks from those fans that are online, the web is inundated with Adam information. I remember finding a nice little tour review this summer on a blog from some random guy that got posted on a fansite. It was great writeup, and a lot of people visited it. He posted the next day that he got more traffic in one day for that one entry than he'd gotten in the last month for his blog. For now at least, Adam is decent clickbait.
But once you step outside the internet, and outside the people that watch Idol, there are tons of people that have never heard of Adam Lambert. Or if they have, it's probably in reference to "that gay guy on that show." LOL. As aggravating as a press blitz is for those who don't care for him, the purpose is to reach THOSE people, not the ones already buying or swearing they'd never buy. And that's a shitload of people, so there's gonna be a shitload of press in the upcoming weeks. So it may seem excessive, but I'm damned if I know how you're gonna reach that huge pool of potential buyers without it.
I'm hoping it works, I'm invested in the success of this album because as much as I am really enjoying it, I am really really curious to find out what the guy can do if given a normal amount of time to write and collaborate and just CREATE. So I'm crossing my fingers for him on this one. Go Adam.
I Like Adam's Voice
I'm surprised no one is
I'm surprised no one is talking about the AMAs. Adam just performed, simulated oral sex with his male dancer and made out with his keyboardist. America is in an uproar!!!!!
Well, his year just took a
Well, his year just took a tumble, literally. The AMAs was a big opportunity to show the world who he is and what he can do. Trying too hard, attention-whore who can't seem to nail down the notes. He's like Madonna, Britney & Christina during Swept Away, KFed and Dirrty, respectively.
FAIL.
Seriously.
I liked the
I liked the performance.
The thing that mad eme laugh was the implied oral sex was shown and him basically touching the girl's nether regions made it on my television but they blacked the tv out for the gay kiss. How funny is that?
just watched the ama's performance on utube
after reading the comments above I was expecting to see something shocking and outrageous, but it didnt hit the shocking shelf on my standarts.
I actually liked the performance a lot.
ok it was
a bittotally over the top for tv, riscky and kind of what i would expect from adam. he already demonstrated he really doesnt want to play it safe. lets just see how it turns out for him.I havent listen to the entire album with enough attencion, but I like waht I listended so far. Must say the first time I listened to FYI I didnt really like it but then it grown onme and I've been having the music stuck in my head for the last 2 days
A good argument for lip-synching
He won't have a voice to talk about if he keeps this kind of thing up. I didn't mind him simuulating fellatio on stage or taking a tumble (is that what you call his barrel roll?), but his voice sounded to me like it's under an incredible amount of strain. We all know he can do better--but for how much longer? He had just won points with me when I went to see that utterly pointless new film, "2012." When I heard his voice, I knew the credits were about to roll, and I could finally leave the theatre after what seemed like days. No, honestly, what was there to like about the AMAs? When he finished he looked incredibly beat down. The good news is that he'll have other chances to look better.
"The mountain has wings."
I agree...
with you that Adam looked beat down at the end of the song. He did not look like he was having a good time through the whole song. Of course, everyone will make a big deal about the sex stuff, which I thought was pretty typical for this type of show. (where I live, there was so much beeped out of Emenem's song, there were stretches of *silence*)
Adam's voice was strained and not at his best. The whole thing seemed too contrived for shock value and not at all for musicality. I was disappointed in the performance and I felt very bad for Adam. Whoever thought that performance was a good idea really missed the boat.
Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy.
Wasn't he the one who
