AfterElton Briefs: Lady Gaga Does Good While Jerry Seinfeld Hates, Bruce Vilanch Laughs, and Brendan Burke's Legacy

Plus Newsweek loses Ramin Setoodeh, Denis O'Hare gets hazed, and Alexander McQueen laid to rest.

Happy Birthday, Cyndi.

  • Cyndi Lauper has a birthday today, and I hope it's a happy one. She does a huge amount for the GLBT community. Incidentally, her CD, Memphis Blues dropped today, and it is a masterpiece. Her voice was built for blues. Here she is discussing Lady Gaga with Joy Behar.

  • Speaking of Lady Gaga, excerpts from her Rolling Stone interview are out, and while I appreciate her words on Don't Ask, Don't Tell, I'm inspired by her motivational techniques. It may even get me to put on pants before noon.
When I wake up in the morning, I feel just like any other insecure 24-year-old girl. Then I say, 'Bitch, you're Lady Gaga, you get up and walk the walk today.'
  • Jerry Seinfeld has finally spoken up about Lady Gaga's behavior when she was seated in his private box at the Mets game without his knowledge. He's a bit harsh, but I agree with Vulture - if his sitcom was still on the air, he would already be filming the episode based on it.
This woman is a jerk. I hate her. I can't believe they put her in my box, which I paid for. You give people the finger and you get upgraded? Is that the world we're living in now?
  • Fox has quietly scrapped the reality show they were planning to use to cast new roles on Glee. Ryan Murphy decided he just didn't have time to take on a new show. But all those videos are still being watched, and the best will still get a role on Glee, even if it's just for one episode.
  • Tonight at 10pm on Real Sports with Bryant Gumble on HBO, Gareth Thomas sits down to talk about being the only out athlete in a major team sport. The clip below shows exactly how Gareth feels about that.

  • I don't really know what to make of the HOTD8 Campaign. I know it's comedy, and given appearances at places like Hamburger Mary's and donating funds to Marriage Equality USA, I'm guessing they're gay or pro-gay. But has the NOH8 campaign reached the point where we should be mocking it or creating a parody?
The HOT D8 Campaign aims to raise awareness in the LGBT community of the importance of glamorous photos with nonsensical tag lines and duct tape.

  • Ramin Setoodeh is leaving Newsweek to write for People. On one hand, he won't be expected to write anything to be taken seriously. On the other hand, he's likely to encounter a lot more homosexuals he finds less-than-convincing.
  • Not only does Toronto Maple Leaf's General Manager Brian Burke plan on continuing his son Brendan's legacy, so does his brother Patrick Burke. This moving essay gives you more insight into an oft-neglected aspect of coming out, the family.

And today's Briefs are brought to you by...
