AfterElton Briefs: Jane Lynch Does Something, Ben Cohen, and Does the New Champion of Capua Measure Up?

Plus Scott Thompson gets graphic, The Kids Are All Right enrages the far right, and just how many men share Wallace's bed?

Jane Lynch spruces up a pelican from the Gulf oil spill.

  • Above you can see how Jane Lynch goes above and beyond simply washing an oil-covered pelican in Dawn detergent for the Do Something Awards, airing live on VH1 tonight at 9pm EDT. This is in marked contrast to how her alter-ego Sue Sylvester reacted to the Gulf oil spill.
We love a sense of whimsy in the AfterElton.com offices, we express it via Silly Bandz.
  • Out Canadian funnyman Scott Thompson is turning his Danny Husk character into a graphic novel. Husk was a former adult film star turned corporate executive whose natural musk can cause world peace.
  • Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has just inked a four-year deal with Fox that will net him a minimum of $24 million, as well as retroactively giving him a piece of all Glee music, merchandise, and tour sales. He retains the rights to create a stage version as well. All in all it's expected to net him $10 million/year minimum. I wonder if he needs a pool boy?
  • The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission achieved United Nations consulting status as a non-governmental organization (NGO) today. This was despite most African, and Middle-East countries voting against it, as well as lobbying by Republican Reps. Chris Smith (NJ) and Trent Franks (AZ). Arizona, this just isn't your year for politicians.
  • Speaking of The Kids Are All Right, Julianne Moore is the new face of Bvlgari. Here she is naked but for some accessories and some lion cubs.
Not bad for 49-years-old.
  • Casting is complete for the prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, called Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. It will focus on the champion of Capua before Crixius, named Gannicus and played by Aussie Dustin Clare. I did some work to find out how much time Clare would have to spend in a gym before filming.
He needs some work, but the frame is definitely there.
  • The Huffington Post put together a list of 13 Great Books for Gay Teens. I haven't read any of them, but I'm glad to know they exist for kids coming out younger and younger.
  • Rugby hunk Ben Cohen did an interview with Compete, a sports magazine aimed at gays and lesbians. When asked about courting a gay fan base, Ben says:
I have never really thought about whether I court a gay fanbase. I actually find it quite amazing that people are so interested in me in that way. I don’t see it myself. But it seems that my acceptance of those who like me makes a big difference to a lot of gay men. I have had numerous e-mails, mainly from young men who have been inspired by me in some way, and so have had the courage to come out to their friends and families and so live fulfilled lives. I have also been told that I have helped parents come around to the fact that their son is gay. I have no idea how I have managed to do that, I have to confess – but if my openness has done that then it seems that it is the right way to be.
  • Anti-gay politician/preacher/talk show host Mike Huckabee begins a trial run of his daytime talk show in major markets on July 26th. While his dream guest is Keith Richards, he says he'd much rather have an opposing view like Bill Maher or Rosie O'Donnell.
  • This next trailer remix from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, "Yeah" begs the question: Just how many boys sleep in Wallace's bed? I've now counted five.

  • Outfest has announced their winners, and they include local favorite Undertow. But the film that intrigues me most is Chad Allen's Spork, mostly because Chad Allen intrigues me.
  • The New York Times has a really detailed, emotional story about writer Jerry Mahoney and his partner, Drew, former head of reality programming for MTV and their quest for children via surrogate.
I think a lot of the camp has been stripped. The sexuality isn’t dressed up to make it any safer, and I think that’s going to be threatening to some people. It’s a lot more real and less of a fantasy.
