AfterElton Briefs: Gavin Creel, Scientology, Male Nudity, and more
Who else could these two share their clothes with?
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.
- Above are Gavin Creel, and newly out Jonathan Groff, who are being tagged as Broadway's new power couple.
- The Gay Gamer puts forth the concept of "hate credits" for people who want to play games based on homophobe Orson Scott Card's work. Personally, not buying it - and neither should you.
- The White House is finding a way to note the passage of The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act after all.
- The director of Crash, the film that beat out Brokeback Mountain for the Oscar, Paul Haggis, has resigned the Church of Scientology. And it's over their treatment of gay rights. Karma, may indeed be real.
- Above, Ambre Lake, from VH1's Rock of Love, takes her shirt off at the Los Angeles Mormon Temple in support of gay marriage. Not a sentence I ever expected to write.
- Our friends over at the politically minded Bilerico Project took a look at their Top 10 Out Male Pop Stars, from Sir Elton John to Mika.
- The True Colors Cabaret in NYC has its first show tonight, hosted by gay fav/goddess Cyndi Lauper, and featuring Gavin Creel. Upcoming shows will be hosted by Van Hansis and Rufus Wainright, and feature Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, and Jason Mraz.
- Above you can see the odd story about the...themed gay Halloween party John C. Reilly stumbled into when he was 18 and drunk in Chicago. It was broadcast television on Jimmy Kimmel, but beware the story delving into acts that are out of the mainstream.
- There was an interesting piece on the history of male nudity in science fiction. From Bruce Willis to Russell Crowe (whose behind was amazing), they show when it's been acceptable. *Beware, link has images and video that may be NSFW from movies rated PG to R.
- Over at The Daily Dish you'll find video from The Late Late Show and a writeup on Donal Óg Cusack, the Irish hurler who came out last week. I admit to the Irish accent being a bit dense to my ears, but it's nice hearing the story from Donal.
- Oprah's going pretty gay on her reality show special Thursday with Christian Siriano and Adam Lambert featuring big.
Adam Lambert and Christian Siriano on Oprah?
- Ther's a somewhat odd story in in The Independent about whether British television's gay characters are as realistic as their American counterparts. Is the grass always greener?
And today's Briefs are brought to you by...
This guy!

Haggis & Scientology
The thing is...
Donal Og is speaking English.
Anywhere else you go in the Anglophone world, people either understand or try to understand what's being said. It's really not a big deal. Millions of people across the world make the effort to understand what other people from other countries say.
Look, we're talking millions of people from other countries who watch True Blood and don't need subtitles.
So please stop making comments about other English-speakers' accents.
The rest of the world puts in the effort to understand your accents, so please reciprocate the respect.
Every time I see an American saying he can't understand something, I see Australians and Canadians and Indians and Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who understand the situation because they put in a little bit of work. Literally billions of people can understand different accents. So why can't Americans?
It's not a difficult skill.
Please get over your national deaf ear when it comes to speaking and understanding the English language.
It's not an explanation and it's not an excuse. Get over yerselves.
whoa whoa
take it easy Darrien, I don't think Ed meant for anyone to be offended, especially over something like english accents.
To be fair, America also has a plethora of accented english, some of which I even have problems with. And trust me its not for want of trying. Maybe I just have bad hearing :)
whooooa darrien....a little harsh, yeah?
It's not a difficult skill.

^ I am gonna speak for myself only. to MY ears some accents are more stronger than others. for instance, some british accents are stronger than others.
I watch a lot of BBC America and when i don't catch something, i will obsess over it because i WANT to understand it. Also, I don't travel that much. i don't know many people who are irish or british or any other nationality with a different accent than American.
I knew someone who kept asking me why we say the name "Craig" like "Greg" - this person was british and thought WE were saying it wrong....I guess my point is...different accents say words differently..with a different tone or with a different pronunciation...but i really don't think that means anyone has to get over themselves.
I don't think i need to get over anything. I usually understand my language in most accents, but i also will admit i sometimes miss a word or two. sometimes a whole sentence. Not every american is the same also. i'm not trying to attack you, but be careful with how you word things. you wouldn't want me saying "why are all people from london such so and so?"
Maybe the majority of us aren't well versed in accents, but not all of us. with that said, we don't need to get over ourselves. Ed Kennedy did not insult that man's accent in any way
English and American accents
I hate that I have a tin ear for accents, but I do. I've had as much trouble with American accents from regions outside the American Northeast as from the U.K. About 10 years ago, I started traveling to the UK for work on a regular basis. I was determined not to ask all the time for people to repeat themselves, so for the first month I had several misunderstandings. Eventually, I picked up the rhythym, but it took a few months. I definitely don't think that my accent sounds "better", quite the opposite, it is just slower. It took me time to pick up the breaks in words when spoken at the faster pace with shorter pauses I usually hear in the U.K
Darrien, I swear I'm always apologetic when I ask someone to repeat himself.
Someone needs to get off their high horse
Every time I see an American saying he can't understand something, I see Australians and Canadians and Indians and Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who understand the situation because they put in a little bit of work. Literally billions of people can understand different accents. So why can't Americans?

I work in a department where we talk calls from all over the world. We also have employees from all over the world in my department. I can safely say that one of my English coworkers has no problem asking someone with a thick regional Irish or Scottish accent to repeat themselves.
As for myself, I have had to ask for Irish and Scottish callers to repeat themselves or repeat their question back to make sure I understood it. In fact it seems I sometimes have to do that more with the Scottish and Irish callers.
To be totally fair, sometimes it's not the accent at all but regional pronunciation and regional terms that we sometimes need to have clarified. For example in the video I swear I hear Donal tell the host that one of his dad's friends said "what did you think you were going to do take him for an SAT test?" I honestly have no clue of I heard that right or if there is an medical test refered to as an SAT. First thing that I thought of was the SAT test American high school students take to before going to university. Does that make me a bad yank to ask him to clarify that statement? No it doesn't.
So get off your high horse in thinking that all Americans don't care and are unwilling to try to understand what another fellow English speaker is saying. That is the furthest thing from the truth.
He said NCT, not SAT.
Thanks
Just this past weekend
Just this past weekend I heard someone on the radio saying the name of a ferry docked in our harbour. It has a Native Canadian name and in the 41 years that I've lived here I've heard so many different combinations of pronounciations for it that is hard to believe that we (locals) are talking about the same vessel!
When I worked in tourism, it was hard not to stare bug eyed at visitors when they butchered some villiage's name...but to be fair I've looked at place names on maps in the states and have no clue on what would be correct.
Different states - different pronunciations.
Just because you know how a city's name in pronounced in one state, that doesn't mean every state pronounces it the same. :-(
Take for example Miami. There's of course the one in Florida, but there's also one in Oklahoma. The one in Florida... My-am-ee. The one in Oklahoma.. My-am-a.
I think you're over-reacting
Darrien, I think you're over-reacting. Ed simply wrote "I admit to the Irish accent being a bit dense to my ears". That's not disrespectful in the least. He also wrote "but it's nice hearing the story from Donal" so obviously he made the effort to watch the interview.
Maybe not for you, but not everyone has the same facility with languages and accents. And some accents are thicker than others, depending on who's doing the talking and who's doing the listening. I watched the entire Donal Og Cusack interview and understood much of it, except for when they started talking about hurling and the times he used some Irish idioms.
Sorry...
I'm Irish, and I've had
I'm Irish, and I've had trouble understanding Irish accents in the past. Some of us talk pretty fast, on top of the accent, and some accents also have strange intonation that can throw your understanding off.
It's not like he was saying it was impossible, just that he had a little trouble. I've known people for years that I still have a bit of tourble understanding if they're talking particularly fast.
Yikes!
Umm... to explain
First I wasn't attacking Ed. I'd never do that.
As I wrote the comment, I was making a fairly light-hearted comment just before I went to bed. I really should have put some more jokes in it to make the jokey-ness of it clear. Re-reading it, the 'yerselves' as opposed to 'yourselves' was the only indication that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Whoops. I think I just wrote it too quickly. The tone of mild snark/sarcasm that I heard when I wrote the post translated into witless outrage when translated onto the screen
So apologies to Ed, obviously, and everyone who was offended. I promise you, I wasn't deliberately and obnoxiously attacking Americans or anyone else. It really was supposed to be a very mild comment with a couple of laughs. Except there weren't the laughs.
Ahh, subtlties of the internet
Good morning, Darrien. ;) It did seem a bit harsh coming for you, though it wouldn't be a Briefs post from me if someone wasn't angry.
My dear Irish ancestors (last name is 'Kennedy') were a little concerned I didn't understand everything Donal said first go around, but didn't expect anyone else would care - with my hillbilly accent, I have enough trouble with Paula Dean's southern belle accent, much less that. Though I expect it's because I can weight as she talks - I don't even have to eat the food.
All is water under the bridge. Now on to important things, like did anyone like my Briefs guy?
that's so weird ed....
for some reason, i can't see you with a 'hillbilly accent'
i now have the urge to ask you to tape yourself talking, so we can all hear what you sound like. :-P
I second
Briefs guy
ALLways like your briefs men ;-)
(how did you get that bit of bare arse past Michael? ROFL)
also agree with Liz -- a vlog with accent is needed Giggle
who finds levi johnston attractive?
I am sure tom cruise is going crazy somewhere. I actually just discovered a scientology place here in D.C. and was thinking about "joining" aka not really joining, but joining to get inside knowledge. who knows....might just do it. mwhahahaha.
I don't find levi johnston attractive AT ALL. not even cute or "eh, he's okay" - just nothing.
in fact, who here on afterelton does find him attractive? i'm really curious now to know that answer. :-P

[raises hand...slinks off embarrassed]
Don't be shy
I think he's kinda cute also. Whether he makes a good Playgirl model, well that's a different story ;]
"Drag is when a man wears everything a lesbian won't."
Ditto
aw, it's all good....
aw, it's all good dane. no need to be embarrassed. we all have our different tastes. i was just curious. no judging from me
:-)
It makes me positively GIDDY!
I just want to see him nude simply for the embarrassment it'll cause Madame Palin. I actually think it's hilarious that we live in a day and age where it's not only mildly acceptable, but also fairly mundane that an erstwhile potential member of the White House "family" would do a nude photoshoot. I've done it; half my friends have done it. Levi doing makes it... I dunno... common, makes HIM common, and to my mind by extention makes the Palins common (as if we didn't already know it). I just think it's funny, after all she did to try and cultivate an image, and all she did to get in her own way, now her grandchild's father will go down in history as having posed nude. It makes me positively GIDDY!
I think he's kind of pretty I guess, but I hate listening to him talk. And that, as Robert Frost once said, has made all the difference.
I mean
I mean, can you imagine Ulysses S Grant's son doing a nude daguerrotype. It just wouldn't have FLOWN!
Although now that I think about it, that could be pretty hot....
I TOTALLY don't find him attractive
and I find it dispiriting that he's been given such attention in the gay press, and for what?
Whereas Meghan McCain has been very vocally pro-gay marriage, what's Johnston's stance on that or even gay people, in general?
yay stuart!
you're my new BFF! :-P
nah, meghan mccain got a lot of attention when she came for same sex marriage.....
I think sadly, levi is getting attention because people are just like "omg, he is really gonna do this!" - his mother in- um....i dont know the term since they are not related legally, but sarah palin could've been our VP, so it all goes hand in hand in the shock factor
Plus, if i am correct, gay men look at playgirl and not so many women, if any, so thats why the gay press is giving him attention as well.
How about....
His baby granny?

Levi on the gays
Come on, everyone on this site will see the Levi pictures. He is an attractive guy. He was a very good sport with Kathy Griffin, and may not be the brightest bulb in the tree, but he's not an idiot. And check out this interview from at least a month ago to see what Levi's stance is on gay people, in general.

Any straight guy who can say
It's the novelty of it all.
He's cute when he shaves.
He's cute when he shaves. But isn't his 15 minutes up?
You too can be saved by the blog! www.savedbytheblog14.blogspot.com
I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.
I do!
And I have no shame in admitting it! He's hot! He's got a great smile, and what looks to be a great body (we soon shall see!!) And, he seems to be a decent guy.
Plus, the fact that I'm sure the Palins HATE this, makes it all the better!
I for one am very much looking forward to seeing these pics.

*Sad Face*
I will admit that I am TOTALLY jealous that Gavin Creel may be dating the newly outed Jonathan Groff and I am not. I have loved him since the minute I heard him in Spring Awakening! I can't wait for him to visit Glee.
"Drag is when a man wears everything a lesbian won't."
Cusack
I just loved the interview with Donal Og Cusack. He seems like such a lovely and unassuming man. I can't imagine the courage it must have taken for him to come out in what I guess probably isn't the most accepting environment. Good for him.
On the other hand: the Top 10 Out Male Pop Stars list. The list itself was fine, if pointless, but I don't understand a quote from the post's author in the comments:
"I am a bi man who identifies as gay--one can be bi in sexual orientation, but self-identify as gay often to emphasize the unity with the LGBT community. Now Mika self identifies as bisexual, but many of these men who identify as gay may very well have a bisexual orientation, and--like me--choose to emphasize that they feel unity with the politically 'othered' group."
Is that a thing that people actually do or is that just him? I've never heard of it. How does identifying as gay emphasize unity with the LGBT community? The B in LGBT stands for bisexual, ya know. Most bisexual people I know don't like being identified as gay, and I don't blame them. Also, I think it's weird that he says "many" of the artists may actually be bi. "I do this stupid thing, so these other people probably do, too"
If that Creel/Groff thing is true they would make an adorable couple.
BTW, speaking of out Broadway actors, it looks like Matt Doyle, who also plays Eric's boyfriend on Gossip Girl, is out :
http://www.broadway.com/photos/galleries/day-life-bye-bye-birdies-matt-doyle/day-life-matt-doyle-matt-doyle-final
The "day" is over for Matt Doyle. But the night brings new audiences and another show (as well as a quick dinner with boyfriend Wes).Matt Doyle
Thanks for mentioning him & Broadway partner Wes.
I had seen this but wasn't sure how many knew who Matt is.
Anywho, the younger generation has taken the torch and are running with it. HOORAY
A few thoughts...
Cusack - A true profile in courage although he is selling us his book and may be a a "dog" in chatting up the boys for all we know as teh athletic stereotype goes. He appears to be a really nice and mature guy though and really secure in himself. It is nice that he is following in the footsteps of Aussie rugby player Ian Roberts and others in addressing young men and their fears about either being gay or having a gay teammate. Cusack's genuine care for his fans in bringing out new emails from people saying he is bringing a new face to gay is wonderful.
Gavin Creel, Jonathan Groff (and Cheyenne Jackson too) - I know these boys are talented but man do we have to hear about them every time they move?
Levi - He'll so his junk we all will privately "enjoy" it and move on. He gets his money and continues his 15 minutes of fame and then will fade. I think what is fascinating about this story is whether he is just exploiting the gay curiosity or exploiting the gay curiosity but gaining personal knowledge that gay fans are ok to have.
...and although a legally married man now, I am not ashamed in saying that seeing Darrien and Ed Kennedy subtitled would be hot. ;-)

If I bring out the devil in you, he was there all along!
Cheyenne Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Gavin Creel
Really. Hmm, because right now on the front page
I see posts about last night's Trauma coming out episode, last night's Gossip Girl, a Stephen Colbert post, news about Southland, a OLTL liveblog, a post about the Simpsons, the latest Gays of Our Lives, a PSA about Harvey Milk, a Brothers & Sisters recap, a Mores for Gays vlog, a post about The Amazing Race, the Asshat Winner, a Flying Monkey column, our weekly Bagel post, and news about the gay movie Brotherhood.
You might check your browser to make sure it's working properly.
As for Jonathan Groff, he's been on the site this week because he came out publicly which is kind of big news. And it's kind of news if he's dating Gavin Creel another recently out Broadway star.
As for Cheyenne, well, we do cover gay men in entertainment and Cheyenne is pretty high profile so he's likely to come up a fair bit.
How I saw it... maybe isnt what you see. ;-) And that is ok!
I was just calling it as I see it. Perspective sometimes doesn't make you friends sadly... :-(

Addision, I wasn't responding to you. Honestly, I hadn't
I'm supporting all the coverage you give to these B'way boys
Okay, I feel really stupid because I totally
It's okay
I figured there was some sort of misunderstanding.
I would suggest that Addison Dewitt do what I do when something annoys me--like all the negative comments about Glee--which is read something else.
I'm always glad to read about the performers on Broadway--I'm on the opposite coast and love theater so any coverage is good for me.
ok....
I make one comment sheesh! Did anyone read the other two items that I was commenting on and were much more substanative?
DB... I actually do do that and don't chime in at nauseum darling. ;-/ I appreciate your concern....

Shock! Horror! Awe!
I'm telling your husband on you!
And anyway, Ed is way out of my league. He's good looking, witty and intelligent. And he's probably got a tan, too. I can't compete at that level.
LOL!
I can never resist an accented subtitle. ;-) It is my curse...

True Colors Concert
cool .. thanks
Sorry I couldn't go to the concert but glad you did & wrote on it.
It benefitted good causes.
Are there any CD's of Gavin's own songs (or iTune availability) ?
