AfterElton Briefs: "People's Choice Awards" Are Pretty Gay, Cher, Adam Lambert Debuts Big, and more

Finding a picture of Tom Ford with clothing on was difficult; ironic since he designs clothes.

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.

  • There is a full court media press on Tom Ford's A Single Man. The Advocate interview is wide ranging, from his days trying to make it in the city, why the book spoke to him, the love of his life, and more.
  • From the teaser photo, The Guardian had a nice profile on up-and-coming fashion designer Henry Holland, and the article is unapologetically gay, which we'd not get in the U.S. My favorite quote:
I think it [being gay] makes you more experimental. There's not that whole thing of, 'I can't wear that, I'd look like a poof', because you are a poof.
  • AOL has a nice interview with Ben McKenzie about Southland's future, including this exchange about Officer Cooper:
Do you think they'll ever go there with Cudlitz's character, getting him a gay love interest ... or have they already?
They ... yeah, they start pushing towards that as well. Once again, I think that we got kind of cut off in the middle, but they definitely start making inroads to revealing his personal life more. We're trying to handle the fact that Officer John Cooper is gay as only one aspect of his personality, not the overriding, sole aspect of his personality. He is a cop who happens to be gay rather than a "gay cop." So, much like I don't play a straight cop -- I'm a cop, I'm also straight. I'm also rich, and I'm also ambitious ... [and] named after a fashion designer. [Laughs]
  • Mad Men's season is over, and nobody seems to know where Bryan Batt's Sal is - including Bryan himself.
  • Cher has announced she's returning to Caesar's in Las Vegas for a series of performances this holiday season, and a series of dates this spring. Below we've got some video of the last time she was in residence, and her talking about her history in Las Vegas.

  • Adam Lambert's debut album, For Your Entertainment, opened at #10 on the iTunes charts after less than twelve hours on sale.
  • Surprising no one, the New York State Senate failed to vote on a marriage equality bill in a special session called for today. This is the same state senate that spent weeks with Democrats and Republicans locking each other out of the Senate Chamber like a bunch of 8-year-olds.

  • The People's Choice Awards nominees have been announced, and there's all sorts of gay in the nominees. This being The People's Choice Awards, you can vote for your favorites. A summary, that's far from conclusive:
    • TV Comedy: Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother
    • TVComedy Actor: Neil Patrick Harris
    • TV Obsession: Gossip Girl, True Blood, Secret Life of the American Teenager
    • New TV Comedy: Glee, Modern Family
    • Breakout Music Artist: Adam Lambert, Lady GaGa
  • Below we've got the cast of Glee talking about what kind of music they personally listen to - and one of them is a big fan of both Pantera and Rufus Wainwright.

  • The American Medical Association is the latest group demanding that Don't Ask, Don't Tell be repealed by Congress. Someone who might agree with them? Darren Manzella, who was discharged under the policy. Take a minute to watch - his story is fairly unique, since he "confessed" to being gay, and was told that wasn't evidence when it suited the Army to keep him.

Lee Daniels - J Crew Real Man

It was nice to see an out gay guy Lee Daniels.  That was a great surprise.
I wonder if any of the other guys featured are gay?

There all very beautiful and vaired in appearance.

    Nice campaign.

    Tom Ford

I've obviously been living on a different planet, because I hadn't heard of Tom Ford before seeing reports of his new movie.  I've spent all morning looking at video clips, and I really enjoyed the interview you linked to.  I can't wait to see "A Single Man" now, to compare it to the original story, and to see Colin's great performance.

    Like the swallows, Cher

Like the swallows, Cher always returns! And it isn't even spring!

    Go Darren

I am really happy for Darren. He is very fortunate to get an honoable discharge from the millitary and receive benefits. Hopefully, the US department can use his story to push for giving benefits to those dishonorbly discharged for being "out" and eliminate DADT. Being in combat is hard enough, having to keep your personal life a secret is too much to worry about during combat.

    I think you are wrong.

Can you cite anyone who has been discharged dishonorably under DADT? The policy is ludicrous and it is sad that you cannot be openly gay. Exactly what benefits do you get for an honorable discharge under 20 years in the military? Certainly not a pension or medical. Have things changed? I think some aspects of the GI Bill are available - but I am not certain which ones they kept.

Darren Manzella is my new hero

Cute as hell, too.  :)   I'm thrilled that he's willing to be a "spokesman" for those who've been discharged due to this policy.

Now that the core group has abandoned Sterling-Cooper on "Mad Men," I'll bet we see Sal make a reappearance--they're going to want to recruit him for the team, since he's one of the best in the business.  Too bad we'll lose some of the other office regulars, though.

That's definitely one of the most gay-inclusive lists I've ever seen for the People's Choice nominees.  I think we may be reaching the tipping point with regards to gays being accepted as part of the American tapestry--the defeat in Maine was the last gasp of the Old Guard, like those people futilely clinging to the Titanic as it went down.  The times are officially moving past that generation.
