Their honor roll on the cover is one I can get behind.
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
- The 16th Annual Out 100 issue is, well, out. The cover, as you can see, above, brings the sexy in a dignified manner, and reflects a decent amount of diversity.
Adam as photographed by Jason Bell for Out
To some people, me being sexual is
really offensive because I’m gay. They’re like, ‘He’s
being really gay.’ And
I’m like, actually, ‘No, I’m just being sexual.’ Male
sexuality is frightening to America
[but] female sexuality is all over the place.
- We had mentioned last week about the insanely cool 10-year-old who was refusing to say the Pledge of Allegiance until same-sex marriage was law, but now he's had an insanely long and articulate interview with CNN, which you can watch above.
- Dolly Parton rocks, especially for someone who specializes in bluegrass music these days. She's always had a loyal gay following, and more than a few drag queens take on her look. Did you know she got Buffy the Vampire Slayer made? Now in the video above, she comes out in support of gay marriage on Joy Behar's show. Her, I believe, unlike some country artists trying to sell me something. And below, she give some decent advice about life, with an apparent nod to Lady GaGa and that Kermit the Frog outfit.
- Sir Ian McKellan did a wide ranging interview with the Los Angeles Times about his AMC miniseries, The Prisoner, gay rights, Gandalf, and everything else. Besides, that, he looks hot - he is the gay Sean Connery, just getting sexier with age.
- There have been reports that Jane Espenson has been replaced on SyFy's Caprica series by Kevin Murphy, best known for his work on Desperate Housewives. The story's originally pitched it as trouble for Jane, but AfterElton.com Editor Michael Jensen reached out to Jane, and got this quote:
It's
not a big deal -— just a shift in some of the duties. Running the
room wasn't leaving me any time for actual writing and I missed it a
lot. Kevin is really good and sharp and brings a fresh energy to the
room, which is freeing me up so I can do some heavy writing for the big
finale.
- If you're wondering why I'm running that picture of the cast of Glee, well, it's partly because you guys eat anything from the show up. But mostly it's because of Cory Monteith, dancing with his arms over his head. It reminded me of a comedy bit by our own Daniel Leary. Just skip to the 4:36 mark.
Saying something with those arms, Cory?
- Absolutely horrible things were done to a gay teen in Puerto Rico over the weekend. It's truly horrible, and I'll let you go read it if you want to, but if not, just take a minute have a nice thought for the memory of Jorge Mercado.
- Below, you can see some newly branded products such as STR8 cologne, and STR8UP vodka flavors that some are calling homophobic. I don't know that I'm ready to pull that card out, but I can honestly say I was taken aback and felt unwelcome. You guys?
The cologne stand on left is pretty clear about who they want buying.
- Sir Elton John is evidently recovered from his bout with e.coli and will be able to perform tonight in New York City at the Elton John AIDS Foundation's "An Enduring Night" benefit tonight.
- The Pet Shop Boys will be releasing a five song Christmas EP on December 14th. Looking at the track list, it doesn't seem like a Christmas album, but hey, it's new Pet Shop Boys!
- It's not gay, but it is timely - the Leonid Meteor Shower is tonight, with around 20-30 shooting stars each hour. Go outside and take a look, especially if you're in a part of the country without a lot of light pollution.
And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

REALLY great Adam Lambert quote
Awesome news!
Felicia Day announced that NPH is officially on Twitter. I'm sure you're all as excited as I am. :D
@actuallyNPH
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Bravo to Ian McKellan and Adam Lambert. Yay to Scott Evans for making the Out 100. Boo to the "STR8" products.
And my heart absolutely breaks overy the murder of the young man in Puerto Rico.
Adam Lambert
There's an article called "The Semi-Closety Marketing of Adam Lambert" with quotes from an editor of Out magazine. It's an interesting read.
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/dailymusto/archives/2009/11/the_semi-closet.php
And on another topic – Scotty Wandell from Brothers & Sisters has his first food blog up. It’s written by Luke Macfarlane and writer’s assistant John Kazlauskas.

Oh, GR8.
Never diss the Enrique
Enrique regularly makes jokes about how small his is in the downstairs department. But I've seen the nude photos and he's got nothing to be ashamed of. He's a really secure member of the human race and he has no problems about making jokes about himself or his sexuality and his physique.
Also, I'll love him forever because when he was at a London nightclub G-A-Y (which, suprisingly, is thoroughly gay) he had absolutely no probblems making a gay boy's birthday extra special.
For proof, see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5T0I60lC3k
At every level, the guy is beautiful.
adam lambert sure does have a point with that....
adam lambert sure does have a point with that quote there.
I'm not into him as an entertainer or a person....wait, that sounds wrong...well, i'm not a fan of his, but i've always found him to be smart and unapologetic....those are two things i will always give him credit for.
Out100
Huh. Nice to see that the uproar over last year's "here's four gay guys and Katy effing Perry" Out 100 cover seems to have made some impression on Out magazine, seeing as they actually bothered to *gasp* include a lesbian on the cover this year. It's odd that they still felt the need to balance her out with another straight female pop singer (what, you couldn't find another woman who was actually, what's the word... OUT?... to pose on your cover? No Jane Lynch? Rachel Maddow? Lady Gaga, even?) But I'll even let that slide since Cyndi Lauper is a genuine ally who's worth a hundred Katy Perrys.
Also, the STR8 thing is not so much offensive as it bizarre. Why not just come right out and call it "the cologne for sexually insecure men"?
Dolly Does....
Loving Sir Ian
In his view, Hollywood still hasn't come that far in its attitude toward gays.
"The conventional wisdom is that if you are gay, you cannot play the romantic straight lead in a movie," he said. "They'd rather have 'don't ask, don't tell.' The proposition from Mephistopheles as you sign the agreement that you will become a Hollywood star is that you will lie about yourself. That's selling your soul. This business may involve disguise, but it's about telling the truth. And I don't think a closeted actor in this day and age can act as well as an actor who is out."
Great quote from Sir Ian in the linked article, but I really love the last two lines of it.
** PLEASE READ** Will Phillips
If you happened to have skipped over the excerpt and video of the "insanely cool 10-year-old who was refusing to say the Pledge of Allegiance until same-sex marriage was law" in this posting, I implore you to go back and watch it now.
This young man is articulate, sensitive, and incredibly resolute in his opposition to bigotry and intolerance in all its forms. Will is an incredible example of an individual who is unafraid of others' opinions and the social ramifications of taking a stand for equality and liberty for all. Personally, I can't imagine being this self-aware and articulate at age 10, let alone having the wherewithal to stand by ones convictions despite the authoritarian and (initial) parental admonishment that has resulted, and more so to withstand the resulting taunting and gay-bashing he is currently withstanding by his peers (regardless of Will’s actual sexual orientation, which is of course is unknown to us, and perhaps to him as well).
This may seem a small, insignificant stand that this young man is taking but I beseech all to take notice of this young man's boldness and conviction. I think it is amazing that CNN conducted and broadcast an interview with this clearly progressive and seemingly fearless young man, and I would love to see this young man featured on the morning news networks in place of a holiday ornament or turkey basting segment so that all can see and be inspired by the courage and conviction of this young man. I can only hope that more individuals (both young and older) will follow this young man's lead in speaking and holding so boldly and resolutely to their convictions for a more tolerant and equalitarian society.
BRAVO WILL PHILLIPS!!!! PLEASE watch his video testament if you haven’t already!
Lots on my mind
1) I'm going to disagree with Adam Lambert on this one. Not completely, as gay male sexuality IS feared by the mainstream. But male sexuality? Give me a break. How many movies feature guys trying to score with hot chicks? How many television shows have the archetypes of the all around popular dude who can get any girl he wants, or the bad boy who sleeps with every girl he can. But how many of those same shows and movies feature women trying to score with men (or ladies), or girls who sleep with lots of guys but aren't labelled sluts? Male sexuality is widespread and accepted, and used as an excuse for bad behaviour; "oh, boys will be boys", "men only think about sex", "he's just a typical guy" etc, etc. But female sexuality, while used effectively to sell products, is looked down upon. Women are told to dress conservatively and act lady like. A man who sleeps around is a player, but a woman who does is a slut. People are surprised that I think about sex ALL THE TIME, and I can't use it as an excuse. If I watch a serious film and all I can think about is how hot the guy is, I'm shallow. This makes me think about Adam's photoshoot. Certainly he looks polished and sexy, but he's fully clothed. The woman is not, yet she does not get the attention. She is merely a prop used to sell Adam Lambert.
2) Prince Harry FTW! (that article is sketchy though, the guy changes from Ricky to Rocky)
3) What a sad day for Puerto Rico.
4) Wow, if I saw that cologne in stores I'd feel really uncomfortable. That's pretty much homophobia for me.
You too can be saved by the blog! www.savedbytheblog14.blogspot.com
I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.
perhaps he meant the *type* of male sexuality?
I had the exact same thought as you, regarding your first point. But I guess he's showing a different *type* of male sexuality than you usually see. The guys who are celebrated for being able to score lots of women, are lauded for their actions, not their attractiveness. Guys who take care to make themselves attractive, beyond a certain extent, are often perceived as "gay" acting. Adam seems comfortable being an object of desire. I think that is what he meant in that quote.
Actually Madeline said
Actually Madeline said exactly what I was thinking. What the world sees and celebrates is not female sexuality but male sexuality channeled through females.
which actually supports Bountiful's idea. Men are not generally supposed to be thought of as beautiful and sexy. Pretty much every People Sexiest Man Alive has made a joke of it, and no doubt been the butt of plenty of jokes about it. Most of the 'beautiful' male celebrities who get lauded for their looks tend to play them down whenever they can, look at Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp. If they don't people tend to consider them vain or egotistical or not 'manly'.
And I'm leaning toward that as what Adam meant --that if someone says he's beautiful he can appreciate it and not run out and grow a beard or put on a trucker's hat and some plaid and skulk in the corner.
Michael Urie in the "Out 100"
Cindy Lauper also on "Out 100"
I haven't seen anything about Urie coming out but just like being on the cover of "Out" doesn't mean your "out," neither does being on the "Out 100" where Cindy Lauper appears as an "ally."
Umm..
Over the fence is out
Apparently you don't have to be "out" to be in the "Out 100." No wonder I'm confused. So that accounts for Nick Cave's being on the list--sort of--what? did someone finally listen to "Murder Ballads"?
"The mountain has wings."
Out 100
The Nick Cave on the list isn't the singer Nick Cave, but the artist Nick Cave. See here.
And I get that the list doesn't necessarily include all GLBT people, like Katy Perry last year and Cyndi Lauper this year. But at least in regards to Lauper, she is very clearly identified as an "ally" in the article, while it is more ambiguous about Michael Urie.
Perhaps someone at AE can contact OUT to clarify the matter. Remember a few years back, Darryl Stephens used the "Out 100" as his way of officially coming out.
There he goes again
Thanks for the link. I really didn't know there was a second Nick Cave until this list came out, then I tried to make a bad joke. I've been doing that a lot lately. And, while Lauper's presence remains ambiguous, perhaps Urie and someone on the Out staff came to an "understanding" (wink, wink--nod, nod) about his position on the list.
"The mountain has wings."
STR8 and STR8UP
The cologne advert is... well, yeah, I honestly can't see any other way it could be interpreted. The worst part it it doesn't even seem mean-spirited in its' phrasing: It's not an attack, it's a dismissal, which somehow hurts more.
Can't say I'm quite as pissed vis a vis the vodka though: Doesn't "straight-up" mean an alcoholic spirit served unmixed and without ice? STR8UP vodka is probably a perfectly innocent name being marketed to the youthful crowd who for some strange reason cream their pants when numbers are substituted for letters.
I'll take Cyndi Lauper any day
