AfterElton Briefs: "Glee" Boys Reveal "Man-crushes", Stephen Gately Gets Sold Out and more!

Allan Hyde and his friend Hadleyk
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
- Because we all previously enjoyed seeing Allan Hyde (Godric in True Blood) in his wolf T-shirts, above we have a still from a short film he did with his buddy Hadleyk called Smile. Hadleyk seems to film a lot of silliness and post it on his website. While Smile is safe for work, some of the videos he tweets definitely are not. And I'm not paying your therapy bills if you watch them.
The graphic artists who did the cover were more polite than the interviewer.
- Speaking of Taylor Lautner, he and James Franco were both announced as hosts for Saturday Night Live in December. Unless that little werewolf pup runs around shirtless the whole show, count me as on Team Franco.
- Despite being a writer covering GLBT issues, I totally missed the transphobia in last week's The Cleveland Show until it was point out to me. If I can be that oblivious, I'm starting to see how homophobic slurs fly all over the place and are never noticed by straight people.
- The mothership, MTV, has teased the cast of The Real World: DC, which looks to include bisexual-Christian-jock Mike. For that trifecta, a casting director must have sold his soul. The teaser video below has Mike with Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO).
- With the cancellation of his ABC show Hank, it was announced today that Kelsey Grammer would be making his Broadway musical debut in La Cage aux Folles when it opens April 6, 2010 playing Georges opposite Douglas Hodge's Albin/Zaza.
- Planet Gallifrey, the Dr. Who blog, has an interview John Barrowman gave to GMTV where he says what we already knew; namely that Captain Jack would be appearing in the final episodes of David Tennant's Dr. Who over the holidays.
Mark Salling from last week's Diversity Awards.
- With all the ongoing Adam news, it felt like we'd forgotten about our other darling — Glee! Fear not, we have the Chris Colfer Q&A with fan questions, plus a link over to People where the straight male cast (plus some other stars) get asked about their "man crushes" with some surprising answers. And below, you can see a picture of a young Cory Monteith dressed up as Harry Potter. Update: I've been contacted and told that while this is a young Cory Monteith, the lightening bolt/Harry Potter scar was added in Photoshop. Still, young Cory Monteith!
I don't know the context, no. It's part of a set of three.
- The Bulgarian man who was with Stephen Gately and Andrew Cowles the night Stephen died has sold his story while also condemning Jan Moir's article for being cruel. Pot, meet kettle.
- Last night in New York City, the first True Colors Cabaret kicked off with Van Hansis hosting, and newly out Jonathan Groff performing. The good news, they raised some money for a good cause. The bad news? The pictures show Van has cut his hair which was getting such good reviews lately.
- For reasons I don't yet understand, the folks at Watch with Kristin on E! Online posted a gallery of A Brief Cultural History of Gays On Television. They didn't support it with an article, or celebrate an event, they just put a lot of pictures of gay characters up.
- The Flying Monkey seemed busy, so watch me crowd source this research. There's a movie coming out in July called Beastly, based on a book by the same title written by Alex Flinn. It stars the dreamy Alex Pettyfer as the Beast, Vanessa Hudgens as the beauty, Mary-Kate Olsen as the witch, and Neil Patrick Harris as a blind ... something? Yeah, no idea on the NPH role. Anyone read the book? Trailer is above.
Alex Pettyfer (Alex Rider: Stormbreaker ) is cast as the hideous Beast.
- On a sad note, we need to mark a pair of deaths. Mike Penner, veteran sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times who had gender reassignment surgery to become Christine Daniels, only to later go back to Mike Penner, has committed suicide. And in Turkey, a gay man was killed by his own father in what is being described as an "honor killing."
And today's Briefs are brought to you by...

doesn't van hansis look a little like...
doesn't van hansis look a little like David Hyde Pierce? I always think of van when i watch Niles on Frasier and vice versa.
eh. maybe just me.
but at this point, can't we agree a little diversity in our gays is acceptable and stop tearing down our own community?
^ Pft, no way. that's the only way our community seems to be able to sleep at night and wake up every morning.
Maybe you're crazy
I don't think David and Van look anything alike, but maybe it's just me.
On a side note, I like Van's new haircut......somebody looks SEXY!!!!
Kitty

kitty, maybe YOU are crazy!!!
Don't call me crazy! Lucy will get you! REOW!!!
ahem. ANYWAYYYY.....i think it's easier to see way back in the day when David Hyde Pierce had more hair...
i read that van and scott evans talked. mwahahaha, a friend told me "hey maybe scott and van had a tiff about who's the better gay soap character, or maybe scott said he was sorry that van's show sucks at writing..."
it probably went both ways. ;-)
Sigh... Oh Ian, et al.
I always find this claim about what gays are like on TV interesting.
Granted Ian is talking about the UK but other than tv hosts and one the character from Coronation street, I don't know where he's finding all this "flamboyant" gays he's so worried about.
Sinchronicity, As If, Hollyoaks, EastEnders, Emmerdale, River City, Torchwood, Doctors, Holby City, Casualty, Skins, Waterloo Road, Shameless
All of the above are UK shows that involved major lead or recurring gay male characters that were not in the least bit femme. Some of those shows have also included femme gay characters but only Coronation Street could be said to have a regular character who one could call "camp" but he's not the only gay character to appear on the show in any way.
In the US, I can't think of one regular gay character that anyone could call "camp". Maybe one of the guys on "Modern Family"??? I don't know really. Maybe my camp bar is too high.
So many folks will claim that "All the gay men on television are super flamey and femme and I'm sick of seeing it"
But when you actually make a list of every gay character (occassional, lead and recurring) on US TV (even since Dawson's Creek's gays first appeared) there's MAYBE one or two characters who could be considered even remotely "camp".
If anything I'd say US TV has aired in the opposite direction in the last 10 to 15 years in terms of lead or regular characters.
Then folks will throw in in "Reality" shows which by their definitely involve real, live gay men (not ficitional characters) to butress their belief. I'm not even going to touch the real life gays because I think they are human beings who should get to be exactly who they are and shouldn't be compared to fictional characters that someone created.
Sometimes it seems like there's a time warp in the way we as a community view pop culture vis a vis how we are represented.
It's like it takes us 10 years to notice any change made 10 years ago so that we're always responding to how things USED to be and never really to how they are NOW.
I know this is a common experience with marginalized groups and maybe it's connected to the fear of things going back to where they were (which is usually not related to what's actually happeneing) but it get's frustrating every time we talk about popular culture in the US.
Someone will say "All the gays on tv are effeminate and we, those who are masculine, deserve to be represented" But then when you list off all the gay characters and they are all pretty preppy to macho in presentation, it's all "WHAT ABOUT KURT AND JUSTIN" (As if these few characters - even if accompanied by pervy "Sandy") somehow cancel out all the Heath, Grant, Calvin, Luke, Noah, Scotty, Kevin, Charlie (the list could go on) type manly manly gays.
It's so frustrating because it doesn't allow us to truly acknowledge and comment on the real progress that has been made (and that hasn't)
What's worse is that so many people pride themselves on not even watching TV but then have loads and loads of inaccurate things to say about what gays are like on TV now.
Clearly there is both a bee in my bonnet and twist in my knickers!
I'm beginning to think there should just be a running list (like the NUKE KISS CLOCK) of all the gay characters on all of US TV, just to remind us of how many they are and what they are like.
Funnily enough, Ian McKellen is rather camp in real life.
Watch With Kristen Clip
Ed-
There was an intro to the above clip:"No matter what side you're on in the culture wars, there's no denying the fact that if young people are more open and comfortable with homosexuality, it might just be because we've all grown up with many more positive images of gayness on TV and in movies.
So in honor of Kurt Hummel's dad being "pretty cool" on Glee, and just because we like pondering the changing landscape of American pop culture, we've put together a gallery of landmark TV moments when gays and lesbians were significantly showcased onscreen.
Wanna see? Click through our retrospective Gays on TV gallery below for a magical history tour.
And then, since we've also noticed gayness on TV has gone from genuinely risqué to something you can shamelessly exploit for ratings, check out our new Hot Girl-on-Girl Action gallery to vote on some recent cases of situational lesbianism on TV and tell the world: Are these lady pairings sincerely sexy or just sorta silly stunts?".
As far as Beastly goes, isn't it just another reworking of the Beauty and The Beast story?
I saw it...
I saw that, I just didn't see it as an "event" that triggers the labor involved in something like this - organizations like E! and AE don't really just jump in on a whim to do something like that. Or at least we don't. Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just didn't get the impetus.
Beastly does appear to be a modern retelling, but it doesn't fit neatly in the familiar storyline. Despite a 5 minute ET clip, it focused solely on the kids roles, and never mentioned NPH. Inquiring minds want to know!
Beastly
Beastly looks like it's going to be largely marketed to kids. How could it not with High School Musical's Vanessa Hudgens as the female lead? NPH's role is probably minor and since it is a teen vehicle we probably won't see him out promoting it much. But he's got ton of other projects lined up for 2010 anyway.
Another example of this type of movie is Alex P's own Stormbreaker which had the Harry Potter-like stunt casting of Ewan McGregor, Stephen Fry, Damian Lewis, Mickey Rourke, and many more in it yet you wouldn't have known it from the way it was promoted. It looks like your typical kid flick, which it was, so I skipped it until it came to cable.
More about Beastly
OMG @ Cory Monteith's picture!!!
It took me like a full 2 minutes of constant staring at that picture to finally figure out who Cory was, and I have watched every episode of GLEE! Whan I saw it, I thought it was Ioan Gruffudd (aka Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four movies)! I swore it was a younger version of him! I had to read the background description behind the picture twice to finally come to my senses and realize it was Finn from GLEE! But look at pictures of Ioan, and then tell me I'm crazy for confusing the two of them:

True Colors at Feinstein's
I've heard that.
That Wasn't the First True Colors Cabaret Evening
It seems that we are
This was the 3rd True Colors Cabaret
Anyway, I thought Van looked damn good last night. He was adorable as host too. The performances were fantastic. Although, I couldn't get tickets to the one in December, I can't wait to see who's performing in January and February.
Allan Hyde
Regarding this adorable guy and I dont if it has been mentioned before, about a week a go I found out that he acted in a 38 minute short where he played gay called En forelskelse (Awakening), where he find himself involved with an older man. One more reason to like this guy. I am on the hunt for this short because I am very curious.
Lycans? Who knew!
Allan Love
Awakening is a great short. Very affirming.
He does a wondeful job. So compact but very powerful.
Love Allan Hyde. He's adorable and a smarty pants.
Beastly
I've read Beastly (a previous post gave the basic plot)---it's a modern-day retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story targeted at teen audiences. The novel was actually quite good, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well the film turns out.
I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
Taylor Lautnor
That cover makes it look like he has a conehead! Cute kid, weird picture.
