AfterElton Briefs: Jamie Oliver Gets Sued, "Nurse Jackie" Loses a Mo(-Mo), and Craig Ferguson At Gay Strip Clubs
Beloved homosexual and his Christmas tree. Norman Rockwell moment.
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
- It's a slow news day, so we have unnamed sources telling Popeater that Warner Brothers is angry with Robert Downey, Jr. for insinuating Sherlock Holmes might have gay feelings for Watson. Yeah, good luck with that, Downey is one of the hottest stars on the planet right now. And if this is true? To the insider: Making Brokeback jokes is still not cool in Hollywood.
- Showtime has dropped the character of Mo-Mo from the upcoming season of Nurse Jackie without explanation. Not that he had a ton to do in the first place, but that's one less gay for us to talk about around here.
- Thanks to the New Civil Rights Movement, we discover this great CNN interview with Gareth Thomas, which we love. What we don't love is that CNN originally titled it "Thomas relief after admitting he is gay" "Admit"? Seriously? In 2009, you're going with "Admit"?
- I'm going to risk interpreting some British terms here, but if I'm reading this correctly, Boy George, who wants to be on Celebrity Big Brother, is petitioning the court to allow it, even though it violates his probation terms (license terms is throwing me).
- The Village People are threatening to sue sexy British chef Jamie Oliver over his promo shot with him dressed as the Village People, sort of. I think if there's a crime here, it's that Jamie got to call himself the "Naked Chef" for all those years and wear clothes. I felt so cheated!
I don't actually get the joke for Jamie's American Road Trip
- BuzzFeed has a list of 2009's Most Ridiculous Uses of Photoshop, and Adam Lambert's album cover comes in at #10. Just like his performance on Leno last night comes after this piece.
- Gay-fave (don't ask me why) Joan Rivers has air-kissed and made up with E! to host their Fashion Police specials after the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards. She doesn't get the Red Carpet pre-shows back though - Ryan Seacrest keeps those.
- From the teaser photo, Betty White stopped by the Craig Ferguson show last night dressed as Santa, and I think she was hawking the DVD release of The Proposal, but her discussion of leather, ball gags, and Craig as a stripper in a gay club were what caught my ear. And no, I am not promoting Salvation Army here. I think they'd actually be horrified.

With the Boy George thing
He's got a tag so he has a curfew and is monitored.
So by being on the big bro TV show he wont be confined to his own house which is most likely the terms of his license, so the fact that by him being on live TV we all know where he is in the courts eyes is besides the point.
I personally do not want him on the show, he's a mess and a disgrace of a human being and the show will only make things worse, plus it could be seen as a reward for his crime as without that profile (which is really the only one he has now) he would not have been asked on.
Joan Rivers, Gay Icon
was the marshall at one of the first Reno Gay Rodeos. She rode around gamely and mugged a lot. We went to her show and ended up in the front table, She was as acid as you would expect, if only I could remember. And at her age she's giving Phyllis Diller a run for the geriatric set.
Aime-mois moins, mais aime-moi longtemps
Nurse Jackie
Nurse Jackie
I really enjoy nurse jackie, but I'm bummed that Mo won't be coming back. There is the other gay character, but his name escapes me.
I'm still going to watch the show, but I'm not sure how it's going to work without Mo's character.
Nurse Jackie
I guess this means that AE will not be covering Nurse Jackie next season unless she has become a "gay-fav". Is this because most gays identify with a drug-addicted nurse? Someone please tell me how this works? Is there a vote or poll?
Well, I think both Edie Falco and Nurse Jackie rock and
Thor
Shows We Don't Like
AE covers tons of shows I couldn't care less about, and I just ignore that coverage. Sometimes even with shows I like, the AE coverage leaves me nonplussed (So much Supernatural coverage, just because they're hot? I love the show, and agree they're hot, but I'm still scratching my head over how that makes it gay.)
Are you actually wanting a vote to take away coverage from people who want it, when you can just ignore it?
Joan Rivers
I remember back in junior high, Joan Rivers was one of the celebrities who would treat the gay community like anyone else. She didn't play along with the idea that you had to dance around mentioning the gay community. She was always inclusive just like Oprah, Phil Donahue, and Sally Jesse Raphael, and her wit and humor were always those of a great ally. Younger people cannot comprehend just how much the media avoided any mention of gay people (and that's a good thing, as far as how much things have improved, that young people cannot remember such a time), but back then Joan and the others were bright spots of inclusion in an otherwise bleak landscape of mass media. This was before the internet and just as basic cable was becoming available so their inclusiveness was all the more important since AIDS was killing thousands upon thousands of our community (it would be more than a decade before any medication to manage HIV/AIDS would be discovered) and few people acknowledged our existence as human beings in broadcast media.
Heroes
Not being a fan of rugby I'd never heard of Gareth Thomas but he is fast becoming a hero for his beautifully honest and touching coming out story. His ex-wife also had some wonderful words of support for him (see towelroad.com).
And I lurve Betty's appearances on Craig Ferguson (who is a total stud).
Sometimes less is more
While it usually sucks when a gay character leaves a show in the case of "Nurse Jackie"s Mo that is good news for me as I found him incredibly aggogant and too much in love with himself. He was the one reason that kept me from watching the latest episode as soon as I could as I knew there would be at least a bunch of glimpses of him being annoying and unlikeable. So - that´s one christmas gift for me that came easy!
