"Glee's" Lea Michelle Performs "On My Own" at the HRC National Dinner

Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Lea Michele, and Jane Lynch backstage at the HRC National Dinner

In keeping with Michael's BGWE theme of looking at the fight for gay equality through the lens of pop culture, Bil Browning over at The Bilerico Project was a credentialed member of the White House Press Corps for The HRC National Dinner.

Of course we know that President Obama opened for Lady GaGa at the event, but what didn't get televised on CNN or C-SPAN was the cast of Glee. First Cory, Chris, and Amber spoke, and introduced Lea Michele to sing. Despite her powerhouse voice, what struck me was the few words she spoke before the song:

When I was 8 years-old I remember my mother and father sitting down with me and telling me that I could whoever I wanted to be, and that I could be with whoever I wanted to be with. As long as it made me happy and as long as it made me feel most like me. And I'm so happy to be a part of a television show that stands by that message.

I think the world might be an amazing place if all parents were like Lea's parents. Enjoy!

And thanks so much to The Bilerico Project's Bil Browning for his work and the video.
