Breaking: Welcome to the Gayborhood, Chris Colfer

Kurt Hummel has better fashion sense than Chris Colfer

Shunning the cover of People, Chris Colfer talked to The Advocate in a new interview and joins the ranks of out gay men in Hollywood. The interview doesn't range very far from known facts, some of which The Advocate just gets wrong - they do claim this is Colfer's first interview with the gay press, though we might beg to differ. There are a few gems in there, though.

They also misquote some facts from GLAAD's recent fall primetime study. For the record, the number of gay characters on primtetime broadcast went up to 3%, it didn't increase by 3%. But what's important here is that we've shifted the landscape again, and we have an out gay character being played by an out gay actor.

Chris rehashes a lot of things we've covered before, such as auditioning for his idol, Ryan Murphy, to growing up in Clovis, CA. But some of the new details flesh out his personal story. We knew that Ryan was so taken with Chris he created a character for him, but we didn't know he'd gone so far as to cut an existing character, Rajish, from the show to make room.

But if there's one single takeaway quote from the entire interview that stuns, it's when they ask him if he was out in high school. Chris gives a response that's both simple, and chilling, "Oh, no. People are killed in my hometown for that." Reminding us just how much we need things like the Matthew Shepard Act.

It's certain the interview was timed for the HRC National Dinner this Saturday, where Chris is appearing with his castmates. And we're more than glad to have Chris officially on our team.
