Daytime Drive By (July 6, 2009)
Having trouble keeping up with the many gay boys cropping up on U.S. daytime soaps these days? We're here to help with our new regular feature Daytime Drive By, where we give you the rundown on Luke, Rafe, Fish and all the rest of the gay gang. Look for DDB whenever we don't have a liveblog and something gay happens on daytime television that you just have to know about! In today's Drive By we're taking a swing through Genoa City, as Y&R's Phillip Chancellor III begins explaining his "death" 20 years ago.
Genoa CityBefore we jump into today’s episode, a word about Friday’s: Cane got backed into the corner by modern science and was forced to admit he’s not Jill’s son Phillip. Everybody goes with “How could you?” and we hear a voice off stage say “He didn’t, I did.” Camera pan, and we have the entrance of the real Phillip Chancellor III, played by out actor Thom Bierdz in a Superman pose. On to today, which is Exposition Day™. You can ride shotgun while we condense an hour’s rambling about 20 years of history into a quick spin around the block. The appearance of her dead grandson causes Katherine to have a stroke and be taken to the hospital (though you’d think soap characters would be used to people rising from the grave more frequently than all of the Night of the Living Dead movies combined.) Anyhoo, Phillip disappears in the chaos and everybody thinks he’s gone, but he shows up at the hospital where Murphy pins him down until Nina can get there. At that point they immediately start screaming at each other in the hallway, so Katherine summons them to her bedside. Catherine knows how to summon, let me tell you. So they discuss watching Phillip die in a hospital 20 years ago, and Phillip explains that was fake, and he’s been living in Australia since then, he owns a bar, and Cane was a street kid who worked for him. And he concocted this whole Cane-as-Phillip plan to give everybody closure for his guilt over faking his death, and as a bonus, Cane gets a (rich) family who loves him.
Yes, it's really me! Phillip back from the dead! You mean you've seen this plot twist before? Brief summary of Phillip 20 years ago follows: he was a teenager married to Nina, had a baby, worked at Chancellor Industries trying to prove himself, was a recovering alcoholic who was drinking again, and his car accident was a suicide attempt. We discover his used the immense Chancellor wealth to fake his death with no advance planning with random people he met in the ambulance & ER. Why he's a MacGyver of fake deaths! There's lots of screaming in the hospital room about having abandoned his infant son and whether he’d have been a good father. Much talk of depression (wonder why?) and resentment of his complicated life back then. Poor little rich boy! Finally, they all decide they’ve had enough surprises for the day and Phillip goes to leave, promising not to disappear for 20 years again. So, that's the end of our tour for the day. We'll actually be spending the night in Genoa City, as our other gay boys are off today. I'll pick you up tomorrow for a liveblog of more non-zombie Phillip fun tomorrow! Luke was on ATWT today!
Woops! Caught us off guard.
By all spoilers and recaps, we weren't expecting Nuke or Kish today, so we pushed the button on the post with just Y&R. Oops. We'll be holding the posts until I can watch all the shows in the future. Sorry about that.
But, I can drop into the driver's seat and summarize the gay boys appearance on ATWT real quick for everybody who missed him:
We should be back in Oakdale on Thursday, though we're having some trouble predicting things because of the Michael Jackson preemptions tomorrow.
Wow! Not quite Marlena
Wow! Not quite Marlena possessed by Satan, but still a little mindblowing. I'm much more into the OLTL Fish/Kyle storyline right now (I can't wait for the next installment... when?!?), but I think I'll check out Young & the Restless. I loved Muhney on Veronica Mars and the DVR needs some activity lest it become lazy, so why not. Thanks for the background info!
Fish/Kyle this week
Fish and Kyle are supposed to be on Thursday and Friday; however, if ABC covers the Michael Jackson funeral tomorrow, I don't know if they'll keep it that way and bump the episodes a day later to Friday and Monday.
Tuesday and Wednesday
FYI
Our sudsy soaps MAY be pre-empted tomorrow due to Michael Jackson's memorial service...from what I hear over at Daytime Confidential, the networks aren't even sure what's going to happen...if they are, everyone, remember to set the DVRs for soapnet for Y&R and OLTL just in case!!!
Just thought y'all should know! <3
i hate this!
(actually i really love it!)
remember when we just had no kisses on ATWT??? now my stupid tivo is filling up on 3 soaps a day. unfortunately, atwt is backburner and oltl is #1 for watching because i remember a lot from 20 years ago, and y&r is #2. so much! love the liveblogs!!
I don't know
I don't know if it's because Rafe is a one note character, Yani lack of actor skills, or the lack of chemistry, but i don't buy this at all.
On the other hand, OLTL promise great things, i'm really liking Kyle
The Return of Philip
From what I've read and seen of Nina (who is maybe one of the most unpleasant characters I've ever experienced on a soap) had a long unrequited crush/love for Philip which at some point wound up with her getting him drunk (knowing he had a drinking problem) and having unprotected sex with him on purpose so that she could get pregnant. She just grates.
Whether she's in the right or the wrong, I kinda just wanna smack Nina (harsh, I know it's wrong)
I think Philip was supposed to be 18 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) when he did the marriage thing, et al.
I'm sure I'm probably in the minority of women who feel this way but I have never understood or condoned women getting pregnant on purpose to catch/keep a man (particularly when there is trickery of the "under the influence" "poke holes in the condom","oops I forgot my birth control" variety.) I don't understand it and it must suck to be the child of said circumstances.
Maybe being a dyke who doesn't want to procreate makes me less sensitive but oh well...
It is one of the most selfish acts I can think of and rarely bodes well for the kid or the father. It's great when the father can "step up" but there's no guarantee that he'll be able to do so (and many don't/can't).
It just grosses me out and keeps me from having any sympathy for Nina's "pain".
Also given Nina, Jil and Kay's crazy controlling, manipulative, dishonest behavior just generally speaking in the world, they should really ease up on the "How Dare You" "How Could You".
Yes it's crazy to fake your own death and run away but no crazier (and less crazy) then some of the crap they've done.
I wanted to fake my own death just having to listen to the three of them going at him in the hospital room.
But I find the story intriguing and really fun to watch.
I don't know the history but is Lily mentally challenged or in some way not expected to be treated like an adult woman? Because they way her father, et al were behaving it was like she had no agency. Your husband lied to you. Deal with it. Go talk to him. Find out what the hell?! Don't just sit on your dad's couch and whimper about it. For better or for worse sugar. I hate when soaps treat women like they can't take care of themselves. Guh!
"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin) ** "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)
You Tell 'Em, Taste_The_Rainbow!!!
I agree with you 100%!
Genoa City's full of hypocrites
Yes it's crazy to fake your own death and run away but no crazier (and less crazy) then some of the crap they've done.
I think that general principle is what gets me by in watching Y&R. Just about everyone is a hypocrite when they get on their high horse (and everyone pretty much takes their turn on the high horse, except for Victor who bought one for himself so he doesn't have to share), so I looking at it as the tone for the show.... that said, it does grate on me when the "Not my fault!" kids are on screen. That's two "duped into committing a crime" stories for these kids in a row, do they get to do anything else?
As for Nina trying to trap Phillip into marriage, I agree with your points with what's wrong with that but back then she was Cricket's rival and, well, there was a lot I'd overlook if Little Miss Perfect didn't get what she wanted (though there are definite limits to that sentiment).
I forgive the "Not my fault" kids
if only for the Chipmunk. I loved the Chipmunk, it was the most inspired plot device a soap opera has ever dreamed up. I miss the Chipmunk.
That said, I'm so hoping this story line plays out in a way that gets rid of Amber, because I can't stand her.
As for hypocrites, I think you're right - the only person I can't recall being a hypocrite on this show that's been here for any length of time is J.T. That could just be because I can forgive J.T. anything, except the fact they've given him a wardrobe other than tanks in the gym and tight worn out t-shirts.
And Victor may have his own high horse, but nobody rides one quite like Nikki.
I'm a little confused re Nina/Lily
Ok, first, I'm a huge Nina/Tricia Cast fan, so I am bit biased, but I was a bit confused by your post: first, you slam Nina as "unpleasant" and "she grates" even though she is a strong, independent woman who has made her own way in her life (even if initially it was bit underhanded, but she DID grow to love P3 before he "died," and she thought he genuinely loved her) and had every right--especially considering they have a son that he abandoned when it was an infant--to berate him, then you turn around and bemoan how supposedly wimpy Lily is, even though she DID initially whip at Cane to determine why he did what he did and let him have it.
I guess I'm watching a completely different program.
Y&R
I just wrote a lengthy comment, only to have the f^((!#& time-out feature cast it into the void. I don't have the energy to recreate it, so I'm just going to repeat the question I'd asked:
Is this the same actress playing Nina from 20 years ago, or a recast?
yes its the same Nina, she
yes its the same Nina, she was all about herself when she was with Phillip but her character has done alot of growing since. When she was with Pscho David, and got her heart broken when Rose took her baby etc. I really like Nine after Phillip glad she is back:)
Ya, Nina being back is great
