Daytime Drive By (July 9, 2009)

Having trouble keeping up with the many gay boys cropping up on U.S. daytime soaps these days? We're here to help with our new regular feature Daytime Drive By, where we give you the rundown on Luke, Rafe, Fish and all the rest of the gay gang. Look for DDB whenever we don't have a liveblog and something gay happens on daytime television that you just have to know about!

In today's Drive By we're taking a swing through Oakdale, as ATWT's Luke tries to help Noah come to grips with his father.  Then we're going to Loop back through Y&R's Genoa City as Adam's world gets very, very complicated.

Genoa City

Adam overhears Ashley and Jack talking about their impending (separate) parenthood, and has a flashback to Ashley losing the baby, and says “Oh, God what have I done?”

At the hospital vigil for Summer, we see a distracted Nikki blurt out to Victoria that she wasn’t snooping when she pushed open Adam’s door at the ranch she no longer lives at and saw “Adam and Rafe, together, kissing” – the horror! Heaven forbid the former stripper see something sexually out of the mainstream.

This is why you always knock while skulking around your ex-husband's home

Adam pops in on Ashley and Jack and MEOW! Claws come out. Ashley naively leaves Jack and Adam alone, where Adam’s bitterness to Jack over taking the fall for forging Victor’s journal comes out.

Nikki & Victoria have a very interesting discussion about Adam being – gasp – gay. They talk about The Great Victor Newman being all for diversity – except when it comes to his own family. There he has certain standards!

OK, I’m getting mad at Victor, and he hasn’t done anything. Victor evidently expects his children to be strong, successful, married, have two kids, with at least one of them a son. Do they think Victor lives in 12th century England?

Nikki and Victoria discuss outing Adam to Victor, under the guise of protecting Estella’s interests, in case Adam is using Rafe. Victoria seems horrified at first, then supportive of the outing. No love lost for your half brother, is there?

Nikki finds Heather wandering the hospital halls and decides to ask her a hypothetical: What if a defendant’s lawyer is romantically involved with one of the other suspects in the case? Well, even I know that’s unethical, but I wonder precisely how unethical Heather would find it if she knew “the other suspect” was the guy she was bumping uglies with, and the attorney he was bumping uglies with was a dude?

Nikki decides her comatose granddaughter’s bedside is the proper place to out her stepson, so she gives Victor a hug, tells him she got him a change of clothes and prepares to out his blind son. But before she gets it out, Victor gets a call telling him Mary Jane has gotten away from the goons he had told to put her on a plane out of town.

Adam and Ashley have a chat about the fact that the baby he scared her into losing hasn’t moved in a while. I guess that hysterical pregnancy can’t overcome a mother’s instinct that a baby ought to kick once in a while.

OK, I gotta pull over and ask directions to Illinois, but join us tomorrow when insane, blind fauxmosexual Adam teams up with crazy cat lady Mary Jane!

Oakdale

A very tan Noah and Luke sit in Java, talking about moving in together. Luke offers Noah another delay (after all, haven’t they let this apartment sit empty for three plot devices already?) to deal with any feelings about his father.

Noah gets a mischievous grin and asks Luke what he’d do if Noah did want some time. Luke naturally says he’d have an irrational hissy fit. They do understand each other!

Luke bursts in on Lily & Damien talking about his burly movers needing money. Damien admits that the $500 Luke is asking for requires an ATM trip. Funny – Luke seems to think he is an ATM. Lily of course pulls the cash out of her purse, since she always carries enough cash to be killed for.

Luke impatiently waits at Java for Noah, who we see in a fake dorm hallway with a box in his arms, saying goodbye to a random day player. He looks in the box, comes out with a Purple Heart, and leaves his box in the hallway, running off to a place that his soul mate Luke can’t think imagine, so he calls his mom and Damien, who knows just where to look.

Damien and Luke approach a teary-eyed Noah sitting at either a gothic cathedral, or what passed for an abandoned military base a couple weeks back. Once Luke tells him Damien had him GPS chipped, Noah says he saw his dad’s stuff and freaked.

Noah tries to evoke some emotion, which may be a stretch for poor Jake. He talks about his Dad being stuck in his head. Damien tells him about banishing ghosts from the soul via some ritual from his “ancient culture” and calls Lily to meet them at the Snyder pond.

Smoke on the water.

Luke holds the Colonel Mayer Box in front of a really nice fire built on a raft. They make some jokes about a Viking ritual, because even they can’t take this seriously, Noah tosses a couple pieces from Bert & Ernie’s Military Surplus on the fire, and pushes it out in the middle of the pond.

I think we're done in Oakdale for the week, so if you want to crawl in the backseat and nap until tomorrow when we get to Llanview, PA to check in with Kyle & Fish, I'm good to drive!

The best part of Y&R today...

...was Mary Jane with the cat carrier crawling through the fence on Victor's ranch. Seeing that stuffed cat in the carrier had me laughing so hard I nearly fell off the couch!

    Yay Damian

I think one of the reasons I identify with Noah so much (even though he's a fictional character) is because I have a psychotic mother.  She was violent and abusive and suffered from an untreated mental illness and she just wreaked physical and emotionally violent havoc all up and through our family.

But even though I haven't seen or spoke to her her in over 20 years, I still have conflicted feelings about her.

I have two separate memories of her: Before and after  the madness.  That kind of thing can mess with a person's head (no matter how logical they are) and can also mess with their sense of self (particularly if that's the only parent you know)

I love that the writers didn't just let Noah "get over it".  It can take a person years (sometimes a lifetime) to get over that crap.

I guess my point is,  just because you are able to acknowledge that your parent is evil/sick, doesn't mean you can just "forget" about them and move on.

It doesn't make you a punk or a bad boyfriend if you don't find it easy to fully and completely hate the only parent you've ever had (even if  you can acknowledge that he is an evil bastard who belongs in jail forever)

There is always that part of you that doesn't want to believe that both versions of your parent are true (because then it's like everything before the madness was a lie) and there is part of you that worries that you too could snap. Like how much of them is in you?

Anyway, today's episode just made me think about that stuff.

I have always loved Jake's performance because of this.  I have always loved how tightly wound Noah is (which make his moments of ease stand out).  Also, Jake does this thing where Noah squints and kind of shakes his head like he's literally trying to shake The Col out of his mind) that I find really compelling (even before the Col came back this time).

I'm glad for once that instead of reminding Noah of how evil The Col was (which he surely knows and which isn't his fault) Luke , Lily and Damian just tried to help him. It may be a long time before he's really okay and I think the writers could really use this to their advantage and stop always bringing in "Big Bads" to create drama.

For once it felt like the people around him acknowledge that he might have actually big feelings about something that couldn't just be wished away.

I'm really loving Damian (even with all his baggage) he understands Noah so well and unlike Holden, he's not all judgmental and holier than thou (yes, I know Holden is more than that but still...)

The idea of having a ritual, to bury the dad he knew was a good one. so Yay Damian.

For the most part, Lily and Damian don't infantalize Luke or Noah (though I guess some would beg to differ on the "giving Luke money tip").

I have a feeling "money" is going to be an issue for these boys once they move in together.  Specifically, Luke's slacker nature versus Noah's being overly extended and less financially stable.

    Y&R (&ATWT)

It never really occurred to me the professional trouble Rafe could get in for this.  It should have, given what's happening to Tea over on OLTL, but I guess I just never thought that far out.  I must have missed the part that Nikki was worried for Rafe that Adam might be using her.  It's nice that it was in there, since Nikki's been the one reading Adam like a book the whole time.

It's also been a good week for Nikki in terms of actually getting to take part in the stories, between this and getting custody of Summer.  I've heard what an indispensable part of the show she is from various people because of her contract dispute, but all I've actually seen her do in my months with the show is wander on to be suspicious or supportive of various people, always the right people.  She's basically been a Greek chorus, announcing to viewers who's right in a given storyline.

Of course, I doubt the Summer thing would go anywhere.  For her to take custody in a practical way, Summer would have to wake up, at which point she will simply say what really happened, and it will all go away.  Of course, that would require Summer to speak, so maybe not.

Even I can't summon the energy to care about today's Nuke doings.  Even though I understand why everyone is quick to blame Craig, it makes me a little sad that he's not getting any credit for his genuine attempts to do right by Carly, and be a different man.  As Maura West's maternity leave looms, I'm a little nervous about what it means for Craig.  We're still not getting any indication of what he'll be doing once Carly's gone.  I hope he doesn't fade into the woodwork.

Surely someone out there must be happy that Holden didn't act like a prat today?

    Outing?

Even though I understand why she'd do it, I was bothered that Nikki rushed to tell Victor that Adam is gay.  I can see her not being able to resist telling Victoria because she had to tell SOMEONE, but it's not her place to decide when Adam should come out.  The irony of course is that Adam is not gay.....

But Rafe is no longer Adam's lawyer

A few weeks ago, Rafe told Adam that because he was representing his Aunt Estella, he could no longer represent Adam. Since the sexual relationship began after he stopped representing Adam, would he still be in trouble? Of course, Adam could (and would) lie and say they'd be lovers all along....

    Dave Doty's picture

    Rafe In Trouble

Nikki's conversation with Heather underscored why Rafe could still get in trouble:  he's defending his aunt, while sleeping with another major suspect in the same case (in this particular instance, the actual perp.)

I can't even pretend to know enough law to say how accurate that is, but it seems like a pretty logical ethical breach to me.  (Of course, sleeping with another suspect to get evidence to clear your client is a different matter, but I can't imagine it would be any more smiled upon.)

    Channing Capwell Jr.'s picture

I get the ethics issue raised,

but right now I'm not sure I'd call Adam a ''major suspect'' in any official sense.  Afterall, if he were a major suspect wouldn't it be unethical for Heather to be sleeping with him as well?   She's the ADA prosecuting Estella, right?   As I see it, the only person who currently sees Adam as a major suspect is private citizen, Nikki, and of course Rafe thought he should act on her claims, but got errr .. interrupted.  But really, the same day Rafe went to go search Adam's room he'd earlier been defending Adam to Nikki saying his friend's involvement was impossible, that is until Nikki insisted that Adam had lied to her.  I don't know the real law either, but in terms of soap opera law, I'm thinking iif there's talk of a breach of attorney ethics in store, it will be treated as something of a wash (and forgotten about by both sides) since the prosecution and the defense are each doin' the guy.

    Have You Been Watching?

"Noah tries to evoke some emotion, which may be a stretch for poor Jake."

MAY be a stretch?  If you've been watching for the past two years, you know without question it IS a stretch. His 'acting' is as painful to watch as it must be for the actor to struggle through to perform.

I did enjoy Y&R today.   MJ was fabulous.  I just love the actress and the character is just wonderful.  BTW, did you catch Ashley saying she and Sharon's due dates are the same?  Ashley at some point is going to actually need a live baby or Adam's goose is cooked.  I'm predicting thanks to Adam, Ashley will wind up with Nick and Sharon's live baby and somehow Sharon will be convinced her baby died.

    Baby switch

It's so obvious that there's going to be a baby switch on Y&R; the writers kept moving Ashley and Sharon's due dates closer and closer together to the point where they're now due on "practically the same date!" as Ashley said, despite the fact that Ashley got pregnant a good 2 months prior to Sharon!

Why does Luke never have any money?

"Luke bursts in on Lily & Damien talking about his burly movers needing money. Damien admits that the $500 Luke is asking for requires an ATM trip. Funny – Luke seems to think he is an ATM. Lily of course pulls the cash out of her purse, since she always carries enough cash to be killed for. "

Um, why does Luke, who comes from a wealthy family (from both sides) and who has trust funds from his father AND grandmother never have any money?  Is he a gambler, coke head, what?  Doesn't he at least have a credit card to charge all these incidentals to? Like the movers for instance.  I don't understand this.  Someone please enlighten me?

    nordic balance's picture

    Luke's Cash.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The trust from Damian (the Grimaldi money) was used to start the Foundation.

Luke won't get the trust from Lucinda until he's older. He's supposed to be 20 so maybe after he's 21?

I'm assuming Luke had some kind of allowance when he was in school and maybe now has a stipend from the foundation as an employee.  Maybe he just overspent.

I don't think Holden has ever allowed Lily and Lucinda to just throw money at Luke.

It felt to me like Luke didn't want Noah to know that he didn't have money for the movers.  There was something weird about the way he waited until Noah left to jump up and run to Worldwide.

I don't really have a problem with him taking money from Damian.  Damian has money and Luke is his son and money is a way to support your kid (I know everyone wants folks to act like money is horrible...)

    Broke Luke

At first, he was always broke because of some delay getting back the money that was transferred away to the Z twins.  I'm not sure if there's STILL a delay, or they've just forgotten about it.

Luke really shouldn't be using foundation money to move, though, so that really shouldn't have been a factor in this case.  There was a tenuous excuse with film-related expenses.

    Luke and his money

It's funny that everyone is spending so much time analyzing this, when it's just the sad sack writers on ATWT not remembering or caring. Luke needing money is just a lazy, easy way to have him interact with Lily and Damian, and that allows them to set up Luke finding Noah gone from the dorm, and ...Look, everybody! We've already written fifteen pages today! Let's knock off for lunch!...
