Lee Daniels
Wow! I haven't had the chance to see Precious yet, but this is EPIC!
First African-American ever nominated? Shouldn't DGA be ashamed of themselves?
Hollywood should be ashamed
In the DGA's defense, the reason he is the first has partly to do with the fact that Hollywood does not support non-white and female directors. Precious was an independent movie, but it still cost $10 million to make. Unfortunately, only white males seem to be trusted with enough money to film the movies they want to make.
Thankfully, Daniels was able to secure the funding and then had the backing of Oprah and Tyler Perry to get people to watch his very powerful film.
Both Kathryn Bigelow and Lee Daniels made beautiful works of art. The other directors nominated made entertainment. Believe me, there are many other directors this year far more deserving than James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino, and Jason Reitman. That is what the DGA should be ashamed of.
I agree
I know you're right. Yet, the Academy nominated an AfricanAmerican director years ago, unless I'm totally mistaken the director of Boyz in the 'hood was nominated for an Oscar, but DGA is so many years late!
I adore Kathryn Bigelow, I'm very happy that she's nominated, even if it looks like one of the big white boys will win. I agree with you that it's a shame DGA ignores so many talented directors in favor of people like Cameron, Tarantino and Reitman.
Yep, but John Singleton bumped Babs for "The Prince of Tides"
He made history at the Oscars for the Directing nominations, but Striesand--who would've been the second woman nominated EVER, as well as the first American--was bumped from the Oscar list to make room for Singleton. (For the record, the second woman nominated was Jane Campion for 1993's "The Piano," and the third woman--and first American woman--was Sofia Coppola for "Lost In Translation.") Barbra WAS nominated for the DGA, interestingly, though Singleton was not.
Surprisingly, the first non-white director to win Best Director at the Oscars was--Ang Lee, for "Brokeback Mountain."
I will go out on a limb right now and predict that Kathryn Bigelow will be the first woman to ever win a Best Director Oscar for "The Hurt Locker"--and deservedly so.
damn
Well done
Another step in the right direction. Even if he does not receive the honor, being selected is huge. Just think of how many films were released this past year and then realize that only 5 people are selected for this honor.
Well done Mr Daniels. Hope you win!!!
Director
I'm a little bit shocked that it took until 2010 for the first AA director to be nominated. Progress certainly takes its sweet time.
Good luck, Mr Daniels.
Not surprising really
I don't know how many nominees have been openly gay
Lee Daniels is also a trailblazer in that respect, though I know Rob Marshall ("Chicago") and Stephen Daldry ("Billy Elliot" "The Hours") and Bill Condon ("Dreamgirls") are also openly gay, and were so when nominated for the DGA. (Condon wasn't nominated for a Best Director Oscar, but he did win Best Screenplay for "Gods and Monsters.") I hasten to add: lots of gay directors won Oscars or the DGA, but being "out" and doing it is a relatively new phenomenon.
