British Boybander Duncan James Comes Out As Bisexual

Duncan James

Our friends across the pond seem to get out in the lead on most things gay. Civil partnerships. Multiple political parties vying for our love. And out boybanders. They already anted up Stephen Gately of Boyzone, and we called with Lance Bass of N'Sync. Now they've raised us Duncan James, of Blue.

The interview with News of the World comes as Duncan and his group, Blue, prepare a greatest hits reunion tour and album they announced in April. Blue disbanded in 2004, after a three year run that included 11 Top 10 hits, and three #1 songs.

Blue

Duncan James, Simon Webb, Lee Ryan, and Anthony Costa

Duncan now joins a growing number of teen idols in European pop that are coming out comfortably as something other than straight. There’s Boyzone’s Gately, Westlife’s Mark Feehily, and Pop Idol winner Will Young, who have all come out as gay.

But Duncan is something else – he’s one of the few male celebrities to come out as bisexual. And he seems aware of the skepticism his announcement could be greeted with telling NOW, "I know most gay guys think, 'Bi Now, Gay Later' and maybe one day the thought of being with a woman won't work for me. Mainly I just want to be happy. I want to be in a long-term relationship and, most importantly, be in love.”

Duncan says he had his first relationship with a man in 2001, just as Blue was taking off, and that he felt a responsibility to hide it. And since he’s bisexual, he was seeing the many women the rock-and-roll lifestyle afforded him in any case. He’s been linked to everyone from Big Brother winner Kate Lawler to Spice Girl Gerri Halliwell.

Duncan’s best friend was his mother, who he came out to first over a vacation in Los Angeles. He’d been concerned about her reaction, as she had raised him a ‘strict Catholic’ but says she’s been nothing but supportive. After mustering the courage for a late night reveal, she told him “I love you, that doesn't matter to me.”

Duncan's bandmates seem perfectly comfortable with Duncan at a recent photoshoot

His bandmates have been the same, and he says they’re as close as they ever were. Perhaps most tellingly of that comfort, when the interviewer asks him on camera which of his bandmates he’d like to date, he grins and says “Oh, I think we’d have a big old group orgy” with all three of the men lunching behind him.

Duncan says he was ready to come out publicly while Blue was disbanding in 2004, but when his girlfriend Claire became pregnant with his daughter, he chose to hold off, fearing she might be teased at school.

Duncan understands “Being bisexual as a man is a taboo subject but I'm 100 per cent happy with who I am.”

It’s a shame the paper he did the interview with mostly agrees about the taboo part.

News of the World is a tabloid, and this was no People Magazine, “Yep. I’m gay” article. Instead, the paper went out of its way to sensationalize the story. The headline reads "Blue's Duncan James: I have flings with men."

The teaser talks about “the incredible truth” and that Duncan has “admitted” his gay secret. Despite first person access to the singer, there’s no sense the journalist identified with Duncan, or wanted to do anything other than shock the fans of the group.

Indeed, the article is riddled with words such as “confessed” and “shocking” – and the timing is of course a bit suspect. Duncan hasn’t really dropped out of the public eye over the years; the members of Blue went their own ways, with Duncan appearing in numerous theater productions in the West End such as Legally Blonde and Chicago, and also as a TV presenter for Soapstar Superstar, Eurovision, and for Disney U.K. Duncan also placed third on Dancing On Ice.

And on behalf of AfterElton.com, let me say what News of the World didn’t: Welcome to the gayborhood, Duncan. We’re glad to have you.

    News of the world

News of the World are not known for their sensitive portrayal of any subject - in fact, the latest news from the UK has them linked with phone tapping scandals, so I wouldn't trust them to give me any news with credibility. Having said that, the fact that a major UK heart throb has come out as bisexual is brilliant! Hopefully more and more younger people will start to address the fact that sexuality isn't always set in concrete, and it's the best thing in the world when you can say that you're comfortable with who you are.

    good to him...

yeah,it good for him.(it painful when we have a secret hiding for.)true fans will not care he is gay or not.can't wait now how many celebrities will follow his step to come out.

p/s:is that true what the legend said that every boyband must been have one gay member?(and why always UK boyband???)

    Whitetee's picture

    Well

We got Lance Bass repesenting the US, and both Boyzone & Westlife are actually Irish. Blue is the first one with openly gay(bi) members that all the guys are from UK, I believe.

    Excuse me?

    He's bisexual.

It's offensive to those who struggle to be labeled correctly as bisexual to say as you did, "he is gay or not."

Bisexual is not just a gay who won't admit it although that offensive and caustic stereotype is deeply rooted within the gay community.  You'd think they'd be more sensitive about labels but it sadly isn't so.

    Thank you for posting this

Back in the day when I still listened to boy bands, Blue was one of my favourite group. And I had a HUGE crush on him. Look wise, he is one of the very few boy banders that I found extremely irresistible. Never thought he would be into guys too!

I`m 100% gay, but I`m very happy that we got someone like Duncan to represent the bi guys. I especially like the stuff he talked about in the interview, he came off really sincere and well spoken.

I wish him all the best and may he find the right guy or girl very soon.

This is definitely a breakthrough. For whatever reason, bisexuality - especially male bisexuality - has very low visibility in the mainstream media, so just by being out there, James could change a lot of people's views on what it means to be bisexual. It doesn't hurt that he's good looking and, as the tabloids would put it, 'hunky', which will challenge a lot of people's expectations.

I confess, I was always more of a Lee Ryan fan, myself. I have a thing for dumb chesty blonds.

    That is very true

I was thinking the exact same thing when I found out that he came out as bi. I just can`t think of any other openly bi male stars besides him & Alan Cumming(which I only learned when AE labeled him as such in articles). He really is an great example here.

I also must give the guy a big applause for handling the interview so well (although the reporter obviously tried to twist certain things and made a fuss out of it). It is pretty clear that he had given some thoughts about what to say, and he did choose words very carefully to explain certain things.

    Openly bi male stars

Brian Molko of Placebo, Michael Stipe of REM, Patrick Wolf, Brett Anderson of Suede, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, and Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance have come out at different times in the past several years.  I'm glad bisexuality is finally becoming more accepted, instead of people just assuming bisexuals are men who are on the way to Gaytown or women looking for attention!

    Oh thank you

I usually don`t really listen to rock stuff so I didn`t know most of them. Now I looked it up and turns out quite a few came out in the 90s, hmm....

    Rockers

People always seem to forget about the rockers.  It seems that theres a long history of people experimenting until they find their true comfort zones in the less populist music forms.

    Woo!

Congrats to the boy for coming out, although strange that the scandal rag that is News of the World has the big coverage of it...

also strange that Blue are doing a reunion tour :S

    News of the Screws

I have a feeling that Duncan was presented with the option of 'come out on your own or we're running a story about you'.

Duncan James's sexuality has been a fairly open secret for some time now - even his bandmates used to tease him about being gay in front of journalists - and I assume the News of the Screws (as News of the World is more commonly known) papped him in a compromising situation and gave him an ultimatum.

It's the same MO used by the Screws' sister paper (the Sun) when they got Stephen Gately to come out in their pages.

It's a vile rag of a publication and - as was pointed out above - is up to its neck in the doo-doo over accusations that it has been hacking the phones of politicians and celebrities and saw its royal correspondent jailed for hacking the phone calls of the Royal family.

While I'm glad he's come out, I fear the process might have been particularly vicious.

    Whitetee's picture

Oh I really hope that`s not the case

But I can totally see your point and it do make sense. Forcing out is not nice, and I do not wish it on anyone. But we do need to remember that Neil Patrick Harris, Lance Bass,T R Knight & Chad Allen were all in some way forced out, and in the end it all worked out for all of them. Hopefully it will be the same for Duncan if it is indeed the case.

I love him! His voice is amazing! I first found out about him while in Greece watching a music channel, and they played a couple of his songs, "Can't Stop a River" and his cover of "Amazed".

Kudos to him for coming out as bi!

You too can be saved by the blog! www.savedbytheblog14.blogspot.com

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.

    too bad

we can't get their stuff in the states, i'd actually heard they were pretty decent for a boy band.  but i'm still trying to figure if duncan james is the bi nick lachey of the group.

    They are good

They recorded a song with Stevie Wonder - which is the kind of honour not usually bestowed on boy bands.

    They did the same

They did the same with Elton John, their version of sorry seems to be the hardest word was a success in europe

    Blue were a favorite target

Blue were a favorite target of Simon Amstell on Popworld and Nevermind the Buzzcocks.  He was savage but hilarious with Costa:
