The Queen of Hollywood annexes another kingdom: Ellen joins "American Idol."

She was already in bed with Ryan Seacrest.

At yesterday's taping of The Ellen Degeneres Show, our favorite power lesbian dropped a heck of a bombshell: She's going to be the new permanent judge on American Idol. This capped what was already a pretty gay week for Idol.

First we had news that Adam Lambert was releasing his album on November 24th, then we had the beautiful wedding photos of season one contestant, Jim Verraros. Locally, we decided that last season's winner was Gay Catnip. Now this.

Seriously though, Ellen has always been a fan of Idol. She talks about it constantly, she has each contestant on her show when they're voted off. And she's considered one of the nicest people in Hollywood, which makes her a natural to take over Paula Abdul's role of nurturing the contestants. She's also up to trading barbs with Simon. It's a natural fit.

Details of the deal weren't released, but it's probably safe to say that traffic in Los Angeles will be a mess while they shut down streets so that truckloads of money can be delivered to the home that Ellen and Portia share.

Video of the announcement after the break, and our sister site, AfterEllen.com has extended coverage.

    too bad...

ugh, if ryan seacrest was leaving, i would watch that show in a heartbeat...but alas, no.

oh well. good for ellen. good for the show...maybe. i don't know. i sort of feel bad for her. then again, i don't think i could handle being on a show with ryan "lame jokes" seacrest and randy jackson saying "dawg" every other second.

    Well, Randy, yes...

I'd end up smacking Randy and asking him to learn a new word. And while I think Ryan is a bit lame, evidently Ellen loves him. He's a frequent guest at the game nights at her home.

Also, whenever Seacrest gets on my nerves too much, I just remember him hosting that Saturday money nerdfest fifteen years ago. He's a creation.

    well, ellen...

ellen is very friendly and obviously finds the good in everyone, so it doesn't surprise me she is friends with ryan....or anyone really. she loves people. i think thats why she is so easy to love by anyone. :-)

    I love Ellen!

Don't get me wrong, I love Ellen.. I'm just not sure how she will fit in on AI. How can she judge the contestants when she doesn't have any background in music?

Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

    Seriously?

What kind of "Music" background do you need to judge AI? It's in our "gay genes".

    i've seen...

I've seen a lot of people bringing up her lack of background in music....but i dont think simon has any background in music either....he's not a singer...and if he plays a musical instrument, then i don't know about it...

i know he signs people, but he is surrounded most likely by actual musicians and stuff who help him do that...

    Yer boy Cowell

One way or another, Simon Cowell has been involved with the music industry since the late 1970s or early 1980s.

He's done all sorts in the business - from PR to A&R, producing and even performing (when he was first producing records he decided that he would perform at least one note or musical sound on a record - shaking a marraca, tinging a triangle, etc to ensure he would earn something from the PRS or ERS every time the song was played on the radio or a jukebox).

He's got an enormous amount of experience of the highs and lows of the music industry and has been responsible for some of the most godawful, but popular, hits in Britain, Europe, Australia and in some cases America over the last 20-plus years.

I met Cowell a couple of times many, many years before he became famous or successful and can tell you that the man eats, drinks and breathes the business side of the music industry with every fibre of his being. Also, although I don't know what he's like these days, back then - once you got past him being a pompous bastard - he was a thoroughly pleasant, down-to-earth, decent and intelligent man who has far greater empathy with people than ever comes across on screen. He also owes me a packet of cigarettes (we both seem to smoke menthol these days, Simon, so if you read this, message me and I'll tell you where to courier them).

The thing you have to bear in mind is that Cowell probably doesn't really evaluate contestants on any of his shows as radical, new, ground-breaking or different artists. No matter what he says on TV, every time he sees a performance I'll bet his first thought will probably be how he'd sell that singer into any given market. In the nicest possible way, Cowell is a shark. He doesn't take prisoners but he's vital to the ecology of the music industry.

And, to be honest, out of the many potential sharks out there, the very human Cowell is probably one of the best.

    I don't see lack of

I don't see lack of experience as a problem either.  If that were the problem, why would they allow millions of teens to speed dial for the cutest contestant or thousands of right-wingers to vote for the one who isn't gay?  The biggest collective influence on the outcome of this show comes from a group of voters comprised of average schmucks who have little to no experience in the industry.  I like the idea that we'll be getting an outsider's perspective and hope that Ellen worries less about being funny than she does about offering valuable layman's insight.

She is my new favorite judge!!!

And one more reason to watch season 9, now that Ellen is on the show, I won't be missing Paula that much. :P

    Not happy

Why would Ellen stoop so low as to be a Paula Abdul replacement on a has-been show.

    What TO DO?????

    I don't get it

Imho, 19 Entertainment, the parent company of AI, failed to honestly deal with the male dance couple who were ridiculed by Lithgoe et al on So You Think You Can Dance this summer. I can't help but feel that Ellen is selling out and that 19 Entertainment desperately needs her.

Does this mean that 19 Entertainment will stop being homophobic? I doubt that very much. Now they can use Ellen as a shield. "How can you accuse us of slighting gays, we hired Ellen." Ellen looks to be their get out of bigotry free card. How much do you think you have to pay to buy one of those?

Being out is not "being an activist." It is being honest. Unfortunately it's such a rare commodity in this world that honesty often seems like activism.

    Love Ellen!!!

    . . .but I think this is a bad career move; I really do. . .

. . .got a bad feeling about this, Batman!

(like I did when she hooked up with Anne Heche)
