Read and Discuss: Gawker's "Handy Guide To All Gay Men"

Where do you fit?

We spend a lot of time covering old media – television, movies, and magazines. Every once in a while, something from new media catches the eye, and we’re not sure how to react to it. That's when we turn to our exceedingly smart readers for some input.

We want to know what you think of Gawker's recently posted A Handy Guide to All Gay Men, which aims to be a sort of comic field guide for straights wishing to understand the gays.

In it, Gawker breaks gays into eight specific subcultures: Twinks, Bears, Gay Jocks, Circuit Boys, Gay-Listers, Art Fags, Show Queens, and Drag Queens, and has a photo to represent each category (ex. Zac Efron depicts "Twink").

According to Gawker, "They may not be very familiar to the world at large, but they are certainly familiar to the brothers in butt f**king."

Okay, so Gawker's usual jaded and ironic tone comes through loudly in the piece. (According to them, we're all bottoms apparently.) But if the thing was meant to be in jest, we're wondering who would find it funny exactly? And do we really need to throw around terms like “Art Fags” or "brothers in butt-fu**ing"?

Anyway, we want to know what your reaction to the article is, and more importantly, what is the reaction you think your straight coworker/boss/brother/sister might have to reading something like this. Gawker isn’t a gay pop culture site after all – over a million unique visitors hit it up each month for pop culture observations, so it’s a valid question.

So all that said, read and discuss.
