Barney Frank Gives Jay's 10@10

Barney gets quizzed about life, politics, and...swimming?

Last night, Jay Leno had Rep. Barney Frank, D-MA on to do his comedy segment called 10@10. Essentially it's ten questions like you might use at a dinner party with friends who need to get to know one another. And like a dinner party with friends, the success of the event depends on the wit of the person answering.

Fortunately, Barney Frank would make a great dinner guest, because he's funny, quick, and has reached a fairly rare place for a politician: He just doesn't care if people are offended by what he says.  So in the space of minutes, Jay sets Frank up ten times and Frank knocks them down twelve times.

Things we learned? Barney is old, and thinks comedy died with Henny Youngman.

Favorite television show is The Sopranos, he thinks Sarah Palin is hysterical and misses her presence dearly.

He's also smart as a whip - asked to name the last ten presidents, he does it in reverse order.

Jay never brought up that the Congressman was a homosexual - but Barney did, in a very in-your-face way that left little doubt in your mind that this distinguished, older, heavier gay man was still quite the sexual being. But I'll let Barney tell you:

All in all, it was a good outing for Frank, and really not a bad one for Jay, who always has a mixed record on gay jokes, even if he supports our rights. There was never any doubt he'd treat Rep. Frank with respect, a United States Congressman isn't Ryan Phillippe after all.

Jeez, this show would be so

Jeez, this show would be so much funnier were Barney the actual host.

    Uncle Barney Rocks!

    Loved this segment.

I bet a significant portion of Jay's audience had NO idea this funny, slighly bumbling, frequently insightful Congressman was gay -- until Barney himself repeatedly mentioned his boyfriend (and the fact that he looks way better skinnydipping) at the end of the interview. Really subversive stuff. Go, Barney!

    Barney is awesome.

I love him almost as much as I loved a similarly-named purple dinosaur when I was little.

The way he always slips in a reference to his boyfriend when he does interviews is wonderful. You can tell he's really conscious of what it means for him to be in the position he's in and how important it is that people know it.

A smart, extremely powerful, self-assured member of the LGBT community. Fabulous.
