Joy Behar brings gay teens front and center in advance of National Coming Out Day.

Oklahoma gay teens featured prominently last night on The Joy Behar Show.

Joy Behar has a liberal streak which might put Keith Olbermann to shame. Last night she showed it by using her show to promote National Coming Out Day, which is Sunday, October 11. She even had a logo for it alternating with her own!

Last night's topic was gay teens coming out earlier and earlier, in what was obviously a followup to the piece in the New York Times Magazine that we covered last week. She had kids from Oklahoma, who were featured in the article, on to discuss their coming out experiences. For contrast, she had Christian Siriano, who went to a creative high school, and represented both the older generation and the coasts.

Check out the video after the break.

I think she did the piece great justice, and switched masterfully back and forth between the bubbly and media friendly Siriano, and the decidedly more reserved teens. I think it's great that the nighttime chat shows have another liberal voice to help counter O'Reilly. What did you think of the piece?

Are you smarter than a high schooler

From just the few comments we hear from the gay high schoolers, it was clear they had far more insight than Christian Siriano.  He could not even sum up the words to properly denounce the phrase "that's so gay"!  Of course he found the words to promote his new book.  What a joke.

I am still in awe of those brave kids.  They are changing this country for the better far more than Siriano.  Good for them.

    Living in Oklahoma for the

Living in Oklahoma for the last 39 years, I know the tremendous amount of courage it took for these teens to be honest about who they are.  They live in a state whose elected officials compare them to terrorists, the black plague and everything in between.

To stand up the way they have gives me not only great hope for our younger generation, but for my home state as well.

    Brave Indeed

Oklahoma City is the only place that I've been a victim of gay bashing, so for these kids to come out at such a young age is a brave thing indeed.

A Gay Kid and a Jewish Woman Walk Into a Closet...

I know it's undeserved, but when I see kids that are willing to come out (much less in Oklahoma) at such an early age; I feel proud. I sure as hell didn't have that kind of courage at that age (or even now some days). I'm projecting felling so proud and I may have to see a pyschiatrist about it. But I'll wait until the public option is available. Otherwise it'd be a pre-existing condition. Kudos to Joy. And at the risk of sounding like a hipocrite, how is it that these young kids can carry the burden but so many closet-ed adults feel it'd be too "demanding/damaging/scary".

I enjoy Joy and Christian, but I wanted to hear more from the kids! Poor Ben only got what seemed like a sentence out. Kudos to Joy for featuring the topic at least. Hopefully, she'll have them back in the future. Such is the media format we have today...
