The CBC News is reporting that Kate McGarrigle has passd away at 63. She was a folk singer best known for her work with her sister, and mother of out singer Rufus Wainwright.

Rumors that she was ill first surfaced when Rufus canceled his tour in Australia and New Zealand, scheduled to begin next month.

From the CBC:

Kate and Anna McGarrigle, known for the originality of their music and their vocal harmonies, performed together for three decades.

The McGarrigle sisters recorded 10 albums in French and English, and their songs have been covered by artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Billy Bragg and Emmylou Harris.
