Kevin McGee, Former Civil Partner of Matt Lucas, Found Dead from Apparent Suicide

Comedian Matt Lucas and his former partner Kevin McGee

Kevin McGee, television producer and former civil partner of Little Britain star Matt Lucas was found dead of apparent suicide last night at home. From the BBC:

McGee, 32, was found hanged at his Edinburgh flat after police broke in on Monday, the Sun newspaper has reported.

The television producer had updated his Facebook status to "Kevin McGee thinks death is better than life," just hours before, the paper said.

The former couple met before the major television success of BBC comedy series Little Britain.

They wed in a lavish pantomime-themed ceremony in December 2006 but Lucas was granted a dissolution in October 2008 on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour by his partner.

Our condolences to Matt and to Kevin's family.

    A sad story

Just to add some background to this. Kevin had an horrendous coke habit and had been in and out of rehab around London and the south coast of England. He'd moved up to Scotland and had become interested in sport as a means of kicking his habit, but apparently it wasn't going well.

There have been suggestions that the reason Matt insisted on a non-disclosure agreement in the divorce settlement was to protect Kevin and allow him time to get over his addiction in private. One of the major reasons for the divorce was Kevin's addiction rather than them simply having fallen out of love.

Since the news broke, Matt has taken indefinite leave from Prick Up Your Ears, the play in the West End about gay playwright Joe Orton.

It's an incredibly sad situation all round and Matt, along with Kevin's family, must be going through the perils of the damned at the moment. I can't even imagine what must be going through their minds at the moment, but it's probably pretty rough. I hope they all manage to find some kind of peace in the coming months.
