People's Choice Awards Lack Drama or Humor, Despite "Glee"'s Wide Eyed Wonder

Glee-ful cast

The People's Choice Awards were presented last night in Los Angeles, providing the least dramatic awards show of the season, since you know if the star is there, they're leaving with a trophy. Neil Patrick Harris let that cat out of the bag on Jimmy Kimmel last night for the six people in Nebraska that didn't know the show was canned.

Still, the show opened with Ellen DeGeneres picking up a tropy for Favorite Talk Show. Other notables were Hugh Jackman picking up the statue for Favorite Action Movie for Wolverine and smokin' hot Ryan Reynolds accompanying Sandra Bullock onstage when she accepted for The Proposal for Favorite Comedy Movie.

Still, the highlight for gay viewers was probably the cast of Glee at their first big awards show, picking up the trophy for Best New Comedy, Chris Colfer leading the way on stage, grinning ear-to-ear. I love that the whole thing is still so new to the cast that they excitedly TwitPic their way through these events. Cory Monteith in particular provides a kind of joy that you normally have to be around a four-year-old on Christmas morning to see.

Did you watch? What was the biggest surprise? For me it was Taylor Swift actually losing an award for a change, when Carrie Underwood won Favorite Country Artist. Don't feel too bad – Swift still won Favorite Female Artist.

People Choice

Good for Glee! I love the show, so I'm glad they won.

Taylor Swift didn't win an award? What happened to her mindless tween droids? Did they somehow fail her? How she wins any award other the "Inexplicably Famous for Having No Talent Whatsoever" Award is beyond me.

In defense of Taylor Swift...

...I am not a mindless teen droid. I support her and vote for her because I think she has real talent, far more talent than most of today's artists. Her lyrics capture EXACTLY how a teenage girl feels, and her songs are catchy and heartfelt. I also think she does a great job of not getting into scandals. And music critics would agree that she has an ample amount of talent.

In (slight) defense of Joe

I have yet to see a live performance by Taylor Swift where her vocals were all that good.

I think she's a talented song writer, sounds good in recorded pieces, seems to be a good instrumentalist, and frankly, was actually pretty good at hosting SNL.

But she's known as a singer, and I do think, ironically, that that's the least impressive of her talents.

I would agree with you on

I would agree with you on that point. Her singing is not her most impressive talent. BUT she is not an awful singer either. And I would also counter that she's known as a singer-song writer, and her true talent lies in writing. The fact that she has accomplished all this before 20 is amazing. She's only one year older than me!

In my defense

I don't think I've ever heard Taylor Swift live.

But if we're going to discuss country songbirds who can't sing live, can someone please explain to me why Faith Hill always sounds horribly out of tune whenever she performs live? I think she and her husband are both incredible people that I genuinely respect, I like many of her songs, but I have never heard one of her live performances on television that didn't make me wonder if she was tone deaf.

Sorry, didn't have to add that, but I felt strangely compelled. I'm an evil person.

Have you ever listened to her music?

Yes, some of her songs are pretty simplistic. But I love "Fifteen" and I think "White Horse" is one of my all-time favorites. I continue to be impressed with someone that young accomplishing as much as she has, and I think dismissing her as appealing to mindless tween droids is condescending and inaccurate.

I think that M. Cyrus would

I think that M. Cyrus would win your award hands-down.  I'm not a Taylor fan but I can understand her appeal much more than that of Mylie, who sounds like a boy perpetually caught on the brink of puberty.

Mylie always sounds like

she just ate 4 packs of cigarettes before going on stage....

Show

I thought that Mary J gave a really good performance and that Queen L was abfab as always.

My biggest issue last night was that it seemed like it was one big Product Placementpalooza.  WTF?

Enjoyed Ashton winning and live streaming for his peeps.  Where was Demi?

So very very very glad I

So very very very glad I DVR'ed the show and watched Ghost Hunters International instead.  I fast forwarded through a LOT of the award show.

Queen Latifah did what she could with the material she was given.  Her best bit was the "Paranomal Activities" take off (with surprise appearance by Cloris Leachman)

George Lopez was off last night.  I didn't get 95% of what he was saying.

Most of the scripted jokes fell flat with a major THUD!  I mean MAJOR!  The bit for Rascal Flatts was sad.  I felt sorry for those guys.

Very happy Glee won and that the cast was there and seemed to be having a good time.

Did anyone else notice how tight Johnny Galicki's pants were when "Big Bang Theory" won and he was walking up to the stage?  Oh my......

And....what the hell was Carrie Underwood wearing????

Six people in Nebraska

hey... what do you mean the six people in Nebraska who didn't know the show was cancelled?! I just want you to know that those six people in Nebraska are always well informed. We light bonfires on the levy here in western Iowa to keep Nebraskans across the river up-to-date with smoke signals. :P

On a side note observation, we have had a TON of snow in Iowa over the last week, lots of chilly wind and back-breaking shoveling, more than any we have had for years, but I was happy to discover I didn't mind shoveling a bit this year since we now have equality.

I was one of the ones that didn't watch the show.

Yawnfest

I too videoed the thing and fast-forwarded through 95% of it when I did watch it. The jokes were abysmal and Queen Latifah was the only bright spark as she gamely hauled this broken down horsecart back into the stable.

I was so waiting for Taylor Swift to make a Kanye joke.....

Pizza

What the hell was the point of the free Glee pizza? None of those people's agents would let them even sniff pizza without a full colonic lavage al la Bear Grylis on the spot!
DalTXBear's picture

Regarding the Pizza

Near as I can tell, that was just some shilling.  DiGiorno was one of the sponsors/main advertisers for the night.  I think we can pretty safely assume that one of the Glee cast paid for those pizzas.  DiGiorno had them brought in and passed around for advertising.

When the Glee cast mentioned pizza for everyone I was thinking "WTF?  Where did THAT come from?"  Then the pizzas came out and I noticed all the DiGiorno logos on the boxes and it all made sense.

Rich's picture

Ahhhhh....

ok,got it. i didn't the DiGiorno's logo on the boxes but cool.
