"A Single Man" Suddenly Decides To Make the Yuletide Gay

Nothing gay about that. Wait...

We've made some noise about Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, based on the Christopher Isherwood novel. The book is unabashadly the story of a gay man's life, and indeed, the movie holds true to that. But the marketing has been somewhat straightlaced, playing up the relationship between George Falconer (Colin Firth) and Charley (Julianne Moore).

Perhaps reacting to a slightly lackluster opening box office, or perhaps part of the plan all along, the movie has released a set of stills and a new trailer that get to the heart of the movie, and the relationship that Colin is mourning.

Colin Firth and Matthew Goode

And this is what every man wants to come home to.

But the trailer is what leaves little doubt to the story, and even goes a long way to explaining some of the beautiful stills that had been released in the past.

I'm going to buy my ticket if it comes to my town. What do you think?

Sweet Colin!

Yep, will definitely buy my ticket too when it's released in my city. Kind of met Colin Firth once and he was a sweetie! And that Matthew Goode is gorgeous!

Do See It/Support It

I too have been somewhat annoyed with the ad campaign/posters/etc.  But I was fortunate enough to go seek it out in the LA opening a few weeks ago (yes, the audience was at least 70% gay men - talk about Gaydar Overload!).  It is very well done - so evocative of the period portrayed - yes, I am well old enough to remember 1962.  Colin deserves every actor nomination/award he gets - he is that good.  Matthew and Julianne are also excellent.  There were several scenes in which I really did have tears rolling down my cheeeks - very powerful.  I've never read the novel - now I want to do that also.

I guess that the movie will tank

unless you draw in the straight Brokeback crowd. Face it - if you have an ad that features two gay guys you ain't gonna get a lot of straight people - so I would imagine it won't open in very much of the US but our own gay sensibilities will be assuaged.

Unfortunately you are correct about the Box Office potential

....somewhat....But Brokeback was bold - had both a poster and a preview that stated - "this is about two gay men in love".  But - it had hotties/US popular actors Heath and Jake which could draw upon the female and other audiences.  And last I heard it made a lot of money realative to cost from many straight audiences & was nominated for and won many awards (Except One).  Yes - I fear we won't soon see that boldness & mainstream success again soon (anyone notice how Valentine's Day is being marketed with 2 popular/successful movie/TV actors in gay supporting roles - one begins to wonder if they will "erase the gay" from the film prior to release??).

I don't think that means we shouldn't support this film - even if we disagree with the marketing/promotion.

I Said in an Earlier Post on the Movie

That i doubt The Weinstein Company will open this on more than 1,000 screens max. Unless,of course,a "Brokeback Mountain" like miracle occurs and it gets the awards and word of mouth recognition it so rightly deserves.

no disagreement there...

The "meet cute" in a Santa Monica mixed bar post WWII is really sweet...and Matthew is in Uniform....

My husband and I

are looking forward to seeing it. We have seen Colin Firth in many movies and have always enjoyed his performances.  We don't see many movies, we find the ticket prices a bit high and unreasonable. We pick and choose those we want to see to support the box office, but usually wait for the DVD and put it in our Netflix queue.

Colin Firth, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult, Jon Kortajarena

If those 4 reasons aren't enough to watch the movie, I don't know what is.

The film, the times..

It's already a forgone conclusion I'm seeing this film, but I just had to say looking at those beautifully photographed stills of Colin and Matthew, remind me I must've been born in the wrong decade. Sigh...

A Single Man.

Glad to say I watched the movie two days ago and found it to be quite beautiful.  Both the filming, acting and most of the story.  It is so clearly a gay story but it could be quite universal when u get down to the heart of it.

Colin Firth was great. Everyone else in the movie is supporting; but also quite good. Loved Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult.  Sadly as someone who likes Julianne Moore alot; her character was the one that turned me off.
