"Saturday Night Live"'s Overly Affectionate Family, Weekend Update, and Vampire Weekend
Creepy or funny?
Oh, the things we watch so you don't have to. Saturday Night Live is nothing but a pale shadow of its former glory, reliant on shock value and lazy humor to get a laugh. Still, they manage to book good bands, which is the main reason we stayed up late Saturday night to watch it.
After a depressing opening showing that they learned nothing from the FunnyOrDie.com sketch on presidential impersonations, we revisited their staple of the Overly Affectionate Family. This time we see them visiting a funeral, which is a great place for laughs. We were really set to blast them for managing to keep all the male-male kisses closed-mouth while being willing to tongue a (adorable) dog, but at the end, they went for it. To recap, the topics of humor here are same-sex affection, necrophilia, incest, and bestiality.
Fortunately, we had Vampire Weekend come onstage with their out keyboardist/guitarist Rostam Batmanglij shyly staring at the floor throughout their rendition of "Cousins." But color me impressed by the performance, because nothing that fast and rhythmic can be easy to sing live. The 80s hair on the straight lead singer held me captivated, too.
Weekend Update seemed to go on and on and on. First we get a spot-on impression of Mo'Nique doing an acceptance speech. I love the woman - she's funny, she's strong, she speaks her mind, but she doesn't speak it quickly. We then get some news, including their laziest joke of the night, which turns out to be a joke about the Glee stage tour and your un-athletic son.
I really don't think they're homophobic on this show, I truly don't. I just think they're talentless hacks who go back to the same well 20 years after it stopped being funny. I do admit to a softsport for Will Forte's song, but mostly because I have a soft spot for Will Forte.
And right near the end of the show (while host Zack Galifianakis was getting his beard shaved off backstage), we got Vampire Weekend back onstage performing "Giving Up the Gun" which got a few great shots of our boy Rostam singing.
