Stephen Gately, "Boyzone" Singer, Found Dead at 33
Stephen Gately, lead singer of boyband Boyzone, has been found dead in Majorca, where he was on holiday. He was 33-years-old. Gately came out as gay in 1999, and was one of the first pop stars to do so. He married his partner, Andrew Cowles, in a commitment ceremony in Las Vegas in 2003, and made it more formal with a British civil partnership in 2006. From the Times:
Our condolences to Andrew Cowles, his friends, and family. Submitted by on Sat, 2009-10-10 20:50. |

RIP
I wasn't a Boyzone fan but it was impossible to overlook what Gately's coming out meant 10 years ago.
Best to Andrew and the Boyzone guys.
Sad :(

''I Believe'' in Stephen Gately
This makes me so sad because Stephen Gately's coming out was really monumental at the time, and I've always loved his CD, ''New Beginning.'' It features his song, ''I Believe,'' which was featured on the soundtrack of ''Billy Elliot.'' ... But sadder yet: Some sick homophobes already have posted nasty comments on the video of ''I Believe'' at YouTube. ... RIP, Stephen!

"The Frost Which Binds So Dear a Head"
How unutterably tragic. I am at a loss for words. Thanks for posting "Better," Ed. I'm sure I'll be playing it over and over today, along with "Picture of You" and my favorite from last year, "Love You Anyway." Rather than natter on, I offer my personal tribute to Stephen, our lovely boy, in the form of this video from Titiyo and Moto Boy, "If Only Your Bed Could Cry":

That's horrible
How horribly sad
I'm in shock...
I have only been a fan of the band in the past few years, but Stephen Gately's personality always stood out to me. He always seemed full of life. It is tragic that his life has ended so early. My deepest sympathies are with all his loved ones.
RIP

He was a talented and kind person from what I've read, he will be deeply missed.

Really sad
OMG!
Just last month a French boy-band member from the 90s was found dead at age 35.. Filip Nicolic from the ephemeral group 2Be3.
What is happening?!
My condolences to Stephen Gately's partner, family and friends.

My heart goes out to his partner Andy and the rest of the group. I saw them a couple of times live and Stephen was always so full of energy and enthusiasm. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace.

''No Matter What,'' he'll be remembered
For theater lovers, here's Boyzone's version of ''No Matter What'' from Andrew Lloyd Webber's ''Whistle Down the Wind,'' with Gately on lead:

Shocked and saddened
Very sad
Stephen Gately's coming out was indeed monumental in the world of boybands and, among other things, paved the way for fellow Irishman Mark Feehily's coming out and continuing to have a successful career as an out performer with WESTLIFE.
Gately's vocals were unique, and I really loved his and Ronan Keating's take on Andrew Lloyd Webber's NO MATTER WHAT from WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND, especially their live performance at Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday celebration at Royal Albert Hall.
Recquiescat in pace, Stephen. I'll miss you.
Remembering Stephen Gately...
Being on the other side of the Atlantic, I wasn't too familiar with Boyzone during their first incarnation but since they reunited a couple of years ago, I've enjoyed their performances via YouTube, especially Stephen's sweet vocals.
I'm saddened the life of such a wonderful talent has been cut short. Sincerest condolences to all his loved ones.

Stephen Gately - You Are Not Alone
This is really sad news
He and Ronan gave voice to this group, he was so very talented and so young. This is really such a waste of talent and life. My thought are with his husband and his family, the unexpectedness of this situation must be horrific.
Very sad indeed.
Very depressing...
I guess no one is safe, whether straight or gay, from the dangers of being a pop star. Too much booze and coke will do just about anyone in sooner or later. My condolences to his husband...

Chuckles!
I still cant believe he
I still cant believe he died. Also he was so young!
RIP. :(
Shock.
Tears can't ever suffice
Stephen was my crush from age 11 till 15
I followed boyzone obsessively then bought his solo stuff later
I was crushed when he came out initially, since the teenage girl illusion of going after her celebrity crush and making him love her fell through, but eventually this was how I was introduced to the whole gay world thingie (I live in the middle east. I know no out people personally), with gay rights and gay movies and slash fiction and all the things that are so intigrated into my life now that I sort of take them for granted
Even though I outgrew him, and hadn't really thought about him for a long time (so this is different from Heath, for example), this is devastating news for me
RIP Stephen
