Best of the Brits: Nine of the Hottest Gay Couples on UK Television

While better than in the U.S., gay characters on UK TV are nonetheless still too few and far between. Although generally reduced to playing in the minor leagues — particular when it comes to secure, loving and stable relationships — there’s still been a few unforgettable (not to mention sexy!) gay TV couples.

1. John Paul McQueen and Craig Dean (Hollyoaks)

Currently one of the most talked about gay couples on British TV, there’s no denying that adorable John Paul (James Sutton) and moody-but-sexy Craig (Guy Burnet) are responsible for putting the hot into Hollyoaks.

2. Captain Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones (Torchwood)

They say opposites attract. Captain Jack (John Barrowman) is charming, confident and drop-dead gorgeous, while Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) is quiet and calm, but with hidden depths. Not a couple in the strictest sense, but there’s lots of lingering tension. Oh, and there was that kiss! (Slash art by The Theban Band)

3. Stuart Jones and Vince Tyler (Queer as Folk)

Best friends with added benefits! Rich, gorgeous and the centre of attention, Stuart (Aiden Gillen) thinks he’s pretty much perfection. And so do we! Vince (Craig Kelly) on the other hand is sweet, adorable and funny. And he fancies the pants off his best friend.

4. Paul Lambert and Johnny Foster (Emmerdale)

From the moment they met at a dinner party there was an instant attraction, and Paul (Matthew Bose) playing hard to get only made Johnny (Richard Grieve) more interested. Johnny is a silver fox (think Richard Gere!) and Paul, with his adorable puppy dog eyes, is far cuter out of drag than in!

5. Conrad Gates and Noah Alexander (Footballers’ Wives)

With his blond hair, flamboyant clothes, flashy motors and permanent sun tan, Conrad (Ben Price) oozes charisma and sex appeal. Having the body of a Greek God helps too! Bisexual Conrad had an affair with his gay Earl’s Park FC team mate Noah (Marcel McCalla). It didn’t last but it made for some steamy viewing!

6. Warren Jones and Ferdy Garcia (This Life)

With his pinstripe suits, serious demeanour and a propensity to fret, Warren (Jason Hughes) was never going to make a gay icon. Ferdy (Ramon Tikaram) on the other hand was a conflicted biker in black leather that batted for both sides. Their relationship was problematic from the start. But it didn’t stop them “shagging into another dimension for six hours”!

7. Greg Robinson and Rico Da Silva (Doctors)

Both tall, dark and handsome, one’s a doctor, the other a writer. Greg (Ben Jones) and Rico (Felix D’Alviella) even made it up the altar. And daytime drama Doctors made history when it became the first soap to stage their on-screen gay wedding.

8. Craig Gilmore and Luke Ashton (The Bill)

Cute as a button PC Luke Ashton (Scott Neal) should have married pretty blond colleague Kerry. But on the day he was due to get hitched, he was caught in bed with openly gay Sergeant Craig Gilmore (Hywel Simons).

9. Colin Russell and Barry Clark (Eastenders)

Colin (Michael Cashman) was an upper class yuppie (remember them?!) and Barry (Gary Hailes) sold fruit and veg! They may not be the sexiest couple in the list, but back in 1987, over 17 million viewers watched as the couple shared the first ever gay kiss in a UK soap. Now that's sexy!

Ooo, John Paul and Craig are definately number 1! At least for the time being ;).

But where is Todd Grimshaw and Karl from Coronation Street?

Er also...the picture of Captain Jack is not one where he is kissing Ianto Jones.

Yep, in the pic, Captain

Yep, in the pic, Captain Jack is kissing the real Captain Jack (who is hot beyond words).

Tony and Simon!

From Eastenders! Tony and Simon! Now that was a hot kiss in Brighton.

And I absolutely loved Craig Gilmore and Luke Ashton. That was absolutely fantastic.

I'll second Tony and Simon!

I'll second Tony and Simon!

Todd and Karl on Coronation Street

One of my fav couples. Too bad it never aired here on BBCA. Of course, they would have just shown it for a week, moved it to 3am and canceled it after a month.

Brittas!

oh. And Tim and Gavin in the Brittas Empire. Granted, they didn't do much, but still.

Craig Dean

Is it just me or does Craig Dean look a lot like his on-screan brother in that pic? If not for the difference in body type, I'd think Jake moved from Becca to JP in that picture. (Sigh, poor foolish Becca.)

You might have missed a few...

Yay for John Paul & Craig. Fucked up but very hot.

Anyway, I agree with Jason.  Where are Todd & Karl from Corrie?  Also, another fucked-up but hot couple were Jase & Mani from the "Sliding-Doors-what-if" drama, Sinchronicity.  Mani was especiallu hot, and those eyes!!! I love those two, and the series especially when it also starred Jemima Rooper (from Hex) and Paul Chequer (the ghost in Torchwood's Random Shoes ep).

Captain Jack and Ianto...

...are not even close to being a couple. When Captain Jack kissed Ianto, he was kissing every member of the team one after the other. (I think to celebrate coming back from the dead) When a fan mentioned the possible pairing of Jack and Ianto to John Barrowman at the Eridge County Fair, John was really surprised and sounded like he had never thought of it. (He says he doesn't read fan fic.)

But that Matt Rippy (the "real" Captain Jack) ohhh......

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

cdalice's picture

Fact check

Uh... okay, Captain Jack wasn't kissing every member of his team at all. He was hugging them. Only Ianto was grabbed for a kiss. Of them all, he's the only one Jack's actually initiated kisses with.

If you can't get your facts straight, then you'll just have to have a horrible warning *rolleyes*.

PS - If the two characters flirt and kiss and have all that innuendo, doesn't it seem more likely that John Barrowman was surprised that a bunch of girls preferred Jack/Ianto to Jack/Gwen, not that he hadn't thought of it? His IQ would have to be pretty low if that were the case, considering their scenes together.

Actually, Janet's got a

Actually, Janet's got a point. Ok, so there was definitely something going on between Capt Jack and Ianto, but it seems as if we fans have made a bigger deal out of it than was intended by the scriptwriters. I've also read JB was surprised at the impact Jack/Ianto had with the fans.
I guess all will be revealed in Season 2. I mean, Jack's departure/return sure leaves some explaining, especially for Ianto. Or not. And then we'll know they never intended it to be a big deal.  (and let's face it: Torchwood's great, but it has plotholes the size of small islands)

If Jack's in love with *anyone* during Torchwood, it's the Doctor.

Wishful thinking

Thanks for the comments guys! No, Jack and Ianto are not a couple in the strictest sense - they are more of a "wishful thinking" inclusion. Al and Dan from that superb C4 drama, As If, were another hot pairing, IMO. I completely forgot about the Simon and Tony kiss, so thanks for that one! Both Todd and Karl and Jase and Mani were both contenders but alas didn't make the cut.

Top Choices

Definitely picked the right two for the top two. Jean-Paul and Craig are really quite something, the actors have such awesome rapport. They really pull it off well (*ahem* so to speak). Loving their storyline. Even got me watching Hollyoaks regularly which I swore I'd never do.

And Jack and Ianto may not be a "conventional" couple but the chemistry sizzles off the screen. Ianto's the only of Jack's team he's kissed (discounting when Gwen grabbed Jack and kissed him since it wasn't returned) and who he flirts with all the time. The opposites-thing works perfectly. Definitely lots going on behind the scenes there, from the hints that were given. So although the characters aren't monogomous I think they deserve their place on the list.

Bit meh about the rest, but it was an interesting read! Nice selection, well done :)

Janet's picture

Yep, you're right...

...cdalice, Jack did just kiss Ianto. I went back and watched that one again. (I guess I was thinking of when he kissed Rose and The Doctor that way, too) But it is still just wishful thinking on the fan's part that this will develop into a relationship, IMHO. I think the writers would stay away from that, then Jack has a chance with every guest and alien that comes along! But I guess it provides good fantasy fodder.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

cdalice's picture

Perhaps perhaps

We really can't say what the writers are going to do. I'm guessing it'll never be a conventional relationship, Jack being the way he is. But Torchwood lives for unconventional relationships so I wouldn't rule out the possibility that there's more Jack/Ianto to come.

Equally, they might ditch it. Either way, the show will be interesting to watch.

Jon's picture

It was more than a kiss

Jack and Ianto had the infamous stopwatch dialogue which heavily implied they were lovers (this was in the "Keep Killing Suzie" episode in midseason). In the episode where Jack went back to the past, Ianto was more and more upset and hysterical about whether Jack would be able to come back. Owen taunted him about his feelings and basically said Ianto was just a piece of ass for Jack.

I don't know how much Jack feels for Ianto, but they have had a relationship beyond just the kiss.

John Paul and Craig storyline in Hollyoaks...

... is definitely giving the show that "must see" factor. cdalice... I agree both actors are doing a fab job. Although sometimes Guy's awkwardness, should we say, is rather apparent. They so deserve their "best couple" nomination at the Soap Awards. Can't wait to see how this one turns out. I believe it's all going to come to a dramatic conclusion very soon!

It's A Great Storyline....

... well written, wonderfully acted and fully of angsty, soapy goodness.  The two guys have such chemistry.  However, any awkwardness I don't see as the actor's reluctance during the (numerous) kissing scenes.  I always felt it was Craig's anxiety about this relationship that he can't stay away from no matter he much he might want to that I was seeing on the screen.  And yes, it is all going to come to a dramatic conclusion soon since the actor that plays Craig is leaving the show in the next month or so.  I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Eastenders - Colin/Barry story was superb

I saw that story. Colin was an older (30's), more experienced man, while Barry was around 18, and sexually confused. Barry was immature and his parents were homophobic. Eventually, he and Colin split and Barry left town with a woman. Colin began to get sick and thought he had AIDS. It turned out he had MS. He left to be taken care of by his sister or a friend or something.

The story was very well-written, very daring, and superbly acted. The man who played Colin just ripped my heart out and yet also made me laugh. I still remember when he and town battleaxe Pat got drunk and kissed, then he realized that he wasn't really into ladies, so they just laughed and joked around.

He works for the UN, last I heard.

That show used to be so racially and sexually diverse. Now it's just a haven for thug hardmen and various bimbos.
