Gay British soaps update: September 17

Here’s a run down of British soap goings on that have pinged our gaydar in the UK for the week ending September 16, 2007….

***SPOILERS BELOW, if you haven't watched last week's episodes...***

Coronation Street, ITV1

Hayley gets a visit from the private detective, who tells her he’s managed to track down her long lost son. My, that was quick! She decides to pay him a visit - the son, not the P.I. So off she toddles to the record shop where he (his name is Christian!) works. And boy, the family resemblance is quite something – the casting department deserves a pat on the back! Rather than revealing all to her son, Hayley decides to do something completely unexpected. Yes, she’s buys a record instead!

When Hayley breaks the news to hubby Roy about her offspring, the poor man looks heartbroken. Yes, you could say he takes it badly. I guess you could call the revelation that not only was his wife not a virgin when they met, but that she also has a long lost son, something of a double whammy.

Hayley decides to pay Christian another visit but not only does she end up telling him that his father is dead (well, that’s not totally untrue!) but she pretends to be his Auntie.

Elsewhere, Sean and Marcus have a date, and it looks as though Sean may actually have found a guy with some staying power. And poor Violet is getting fed up of all the gossip surrounding her and Sean and their baby, particularly when it relates to their chosen method of insemination!

Eastenders, BBC1

Still no gay goings on or even anything remotely camp on which we can reasonably report.

The biggest question rocking Albert Square this week was...

Is Cindy Beale alive?

And the answer is...

Who cares?!

Emmerdale, ITV1

Sadly, any Paul and Jonny action continues to be thin on the ground.

However, hold on to your seats folks, as next week (well, later on this week, actually) Paul shares a rather passionate kiss...

And it’s not with Jonny!

Can't wait to see what happens there.

Hollyoaks, C4

It’s all go in Chester this week. Sarah finally spills the beans about her engagement to Craig, which results in Frankie organizing a big bash in The Dog. Craig isn’t happy about the party, and neither is John-Paul. I guess seeing the guy you love snogging his wife-to-be at their engagement party isn’t going to make you all smiley and happy, now is it. After whisking John-Paul upstairs to his bedroom, Craig complains that he’s the victim, having to lie to Sarah all the time. Nice one, Craig! He’s never going to tell Sarah the truth. So sneakily, John-Paul sends Sarah a text, asking her to come upstairs – on Craig’s phone! Yes, you’ve guessed it; Sarah finally catches the pair at it.

Craig tries to lie his way out of it. Does he really think his girlfriend is that stupid? Hmm anyway, a distraught Sarah returns to the party in a flood of tears (someone really should have told the girl that panda eyes isn’t a good look – she really needs to cut down on the make-up!) and reveals to a packed pub that Craig has been having it off with his best mate. Not even Craig can lie his way out of this one. So he decides to vent his anger out on John-Paul. Although JP did a rather naughty thing, sending that text to Sarah, hands up who didn't cheer when he confronted Craig? It was about time JP give Craig a piece of his mind. As much as we like Craig, a lying, two-timming rat he most certainly is.

After the dust has settled, and she's sorted out her make-up, Sarah realises she still wants to be with Craig. Is she for real? Anyway, she's prepared to try and forgive him. Craig on the other hand has finally decided that John-Paul is the one for him. Even though he does love Sarah, he loves John-Paul in a totally different way. A way he's no longer prepared to ignore of deny. As Craig says, it’s not about being gay, it’s about who you love. Aww, bless. It seems that maybe this pair are going to get their happy ever after ending, when Craig proves his commitment to John-Paul by asking him to leave Chester for a new life together in Dublin.

Here's Craig finally dumping, sorry, letting Sarah down gently...

And here's John-Paul and Craig confronting their families...

On a side note, we’ve totally gone off Jake for being such a jerk about his little brother’s sexuality. And we finally learn just who was responsible for pushing evil Clare off that balcony. Shock. Horror. It was… Justin!

And so, that concludes this little recap of all things gay related in British soaps. Tune in next time, to find out whether Sean and Marcus are still together; what happens when Hayley tells her son that she's actually his father; and whether John-Paul and Craig ever make it to Dublin…

I'm so glad that AfterElton

I'm so glad that AfterElton has decided to a UK Soap recap every week! Saves me having to post the links to the Hollyoaks vids myself...more time to actually watch them again and again myself! ;) Craig CHOOSES John Paul!!!! I'm soooo happy! Romeo & Juilian are together at last!

I'm really getting interested in the Hayley and her son storyline... Hayley coming out as transsexual was done nearly a decade ago now hasn't it? It just goes to show much the UK has embraced her to give her what she has always wanted...a child. I love Becky tho with all her un-PC comments about 'trannys'. Makes me laugh because she doesn't mean to offend Hayley, who she loves to bits.

Eastenders are just behind the times. That or they think that they've already done the whole having gay characters thing...if you call one snog between Sonia and whatsherface a complete picture of a gay relationship. Actually coming to think of it the lesbos are getting a bit sidelined here in all the soaps, there's none in sight! Ah well, do we care? Maybe we're just biased ;).

Now Emmerdale...I'm really attracted to drunk Grayson...in that blue shirt downing port or whatever it was. Ooo the manliness. It all hots up next week! (Actually it best be...the chemistry between said two people has unfortunately always been lacking in my opinion.)

gray/paul.. sigh... well gray is not jonny and the kiss between them isnt as hot as a paul/jonny kiss, in fact it's way cold, and apprently, storyline now aint going ahead. i read on AOL

Will Paul or Jonny have any story?

I know Emmerdale's ratings have fallen. I hope they don't blame this story.

frankly my dear....

maybe it's cuz i am a huge old movie fan, but when sarah was trying to grab onto craig and he just left her room - -i was thinking of the ending scene in GWTW where rhett basically ignores scarlett till she asks him what will become of her and he just says "frankly my dear, i don't give a damn" and walks off. ah, good stuff.

anyways, i am glad craig chooses john paul, even if...er, i won't go there.

ugh, jake is a jerk. he's going on and on how gay isn't normal - er, "yo face ain't gonna be looking so normal once i'm done with it and your ass also won't feel so normal once i get my foot away from it." - - hm, if only i could write for the show. :-P

They are ruining Jake

Before all this started, Jake was one of my favorite characters. I guess blatant homophobia and cruelty is not out of character for him, because it's not like he has been leading gay rights marches, but I still wish they had not done this to him.

The most annoying part is that he says, "When Becca cheated on me, I didn't get with a guy." He DID run over a woman, accidentally, and killed her. Then he fled the scene. Is this better behavior than falling in love with another guy?

I really feel so awful for John Paul, he won't have anyone.

Transsexual Hayley in Coronation Street

Jon, I believe the Hayley/Harold character was introduced into the Street back in 1998 - so it's almost been 10 years. I think the Hayley having a son storyline is an interesting one - beats the Claire/Ashley/Casey one any day of the week! But yeah, Becky is a hilarious character. She's gone from being a rather unlikable one to the much needed comic relief.

I'm also kinda liking the Violet and Sean story too. Hope Marcus sticks around. Sean deserves a decent man lol. I would like to have seen him with Jamie, but alas Jamie isn't gay.

As for Hollyoaks... I totally get what you mean with that scene, Liz. Sarah so needs to get some self respect and dignity. But I couldn't stop myself for laughing at her panda eyes!

I can't believe the Craig/JP saga is coming to an end - oh, it's so not going to be the same without the whole Craig and JP storyline. Both Guy and James have been fantastic in their respective roles. And I didn't like Jake's reaction at all either. I've always seen him as something of a sympathetic character, what with the whole Becca thing and the hit and run. But I'm not liking the way the writers have addressed his reaction.

Well done Hollyoaks

The thing I've liked so much about the Hollyoaks tension and drama is how it showed the attitude so many have that two guys in love is not as serious or important as a man and woman. That's a very real and pervasive attitude.

My problem with the

My problem with the Paul/Johnny/Gray plot is that it makes no sense. I don't get why Paul is interested in Grey. I don't even understand why he is friends with him, especially after that grand speech he made about the horrors of 'the gay lifestyle' and why gave it up for the joys of women and marriage, except for the occasional trick. It's fine if he feels that way, but it was offensive and insulting and Paul should've been bothered by it. There's also the fact that there is no chemistry between Paul and Gray. None. And given that the show is not portraying the Paul/Johnny relationship as troubled and Johnny is such a sweet guy, not to mention smoking hot, I'm having trouble seeing why Paul is so into this self-hating closet case and pushing away a great guy.
