Hollyoaks honored by Stonewall

Are you sitting down? It's been long, long over due, but at last Hollyoaks has finally won an award! The show was a worthy winner at the 2007 Stonewall Awards, having been named Broadcast of the Year, thanks to its sensitive depiction of the gay love affair between teenagers John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) and Craig Dean (Guy Burnet).

The Stonewall Awards, which took place on November 1 at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum before an audience of more than 400 people, praised the show for its "sympathetic and convincing handling" of the "gritty and emotional" storyline.

Speaking to the Digital Spy website, Hollyoaks producer Bryan Kirkwood said: "I'm really chuffed that Hollyoaks has been recognized at the Stonewall Awards. It's a really prestigious award and one that means a lot the show, to James and Guy, to our writers and most importantly the audience that engaged with the story."

James Sutton was both thrilled and humbled by the award, adding: "Stonewall is such an important organization and it's amazing that we've been recognized by them for all the hard work we put into the storyline."

Elsewhere, Russell T. Davies lost out to lesbian Scottish crime novelist Val McDermid for Writer of the Year and Dan Gillespie Sells, the openly gay lead singer of The Feeling, won the award for Entertainer of the Year.

Other winners included openly gay international rugby referee Nigel Owens for Sports Personality of the Year; and former secretary of the Homosexual Law Reform Society, Antony Grey bagged the award for Hero of the Year. The Stonewall & Barclays Community Group of the Year award went to the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard.

Villain of the evening was the Bishop of Hereford, Anthony Priddis, who was crowned Bigot of the Year, after an employment tribunal found the Bishop unlawfully withdrew a job offer to a gay youth worker after subjecting him to humiliating personal questioning.

Finally Hollyoaks get some

Finally Hollyoaks get some well-deserved recognition!

By the way, this is a big week for John-Paul-Craig if you're following on BBCAmerica online.  We get the first kiss and John-Paul's big coming out in front of the whole school.

Tune in for some fantastic acting, especially by James Sutton.  This is really several levels above what we're used to in most GLBT TV and film.

I stopped watching when it moved online. I couldn't keep up (usually I would watch several episodes in a row on my DVR) and the the quality was poor.

Really POed with BBCA.

I hear you, Cylon (great to see another Battlestar fan on here!).  I have no idea why BBCAmerica just doesn't broadcast the new episodes during their ridiculous 3am Eastern timeslot.  I mean, what's the point of repeating old episodes when they have new ones?  The quality of the online episodes are okay, but it would be much better to see them on a bigger screen.

You should check it out this week, though.  I think Tuesday's and Friday's shows are the big ones.

At last!!

FINALLY...HollyOaks got a long overdue and well deserved award. And what a great award to get, one which is a very prestigious and something to be very proud of. Sadly James Sutton lost out the other night at the NTA awards to the very popular Mr Tennant of Dr Who fame, still, it was great to hear the enormous applause and cheers James got when his name was called. And he has everything to be proud off since he stated, just two years ago he was calling numbers at the local bingo hall. I'm so happy for Brian, James and Guy for a brilliant storyline.

The John Paul/Craig storyline has been nominated for a number of awards in the past, but has always lost out to EastEnders or Corri...SOAPS which appear on much larger networks and have been going for decades. But there is high anticiaption come next May at the British SOAP Awards that HollyOaks should clean the house.

I've been following the John Paul/Craig storyline on BBCA, and i'm still very pissed that BBCA will not put it back on TV at a decent hour. I don't get why they can't remove one of the endless repeats of Cash In The Attick or Changing Rooms and give HollyOaks one of those time slots, or just continue with the new eps at the 3:00am time slot where I could tape them and later watch on a decent size screen. It's very frustrating, but then again this doesn't suprise me since BBCA is a mess when it comes to their programming. They constantly pull shows and move them to different times without any warning. I don't know whose running things, but its a disgrace the way the viewers are treated.

Hollyoaks

It's been overdue for an award. Maybe it's because the Brits are generally more used to progress on the gay front that it hasn't gotten more recognition but it was a truly great story line and high quality acting especially from Jamie Sutton.  We don't get anything as good here and this was just a soap story!

If I could get the whole Craig/John Paul story on DVD I'd snap it up and give it as a gift.

HollyOaks on DVD?

duckiestoy...did you know there is a petition on the web for the DVD release of the JP/Craig story to be put on DVD? It was enormously popular, and big time fans like myself would love for a DVD to be made of this brilliant storyline. I honestly believe if a DVD was released it would make a killing in sales. I just hope if the decision is made to release it on DVD it would be for region 1 and region 2 making it US compatable.

The JP/Craig story has been the most successful in HollyOak's history. This great storyline deserves to have the full DVD works.

More well deserved praise...

Oh, I forgot to add BSGnut...The Times of England gave praise to the John Paul/Craig storyline saying it was the best gay story ever in a SOAP to date. The also said it was unfortunate that James Sutton didn't win a well deserved NTA award, but justice prevailed the next day when HollyOaks was presented with the Stone Wall Award for the JP/craig storyline.

Here's the link. Just scroll down towards the end of the page.
