"90210": Which West Beverly High guy is setting off your gaydar?
Last week, the new 90210 debuted amidst a flurry of rumors that the gay fave is (re)starting out with a gay character in the gang (we haven't gotten a straight answer out of the net). Gay bloggers James St. James and Perez Hilton were quick to peg rich kid Ty Collins (Adam Gregory) as the Surprise!Gay, which was a bit of a surprise for me since it was Persian student Navid (Michael Steger) who hit my gaydar. Then again, almost all of the guys set my gaydar off at one point or another, so I figured it might be interesting to take a look at the new 90210 guys and see why they may turn the needle on the gaydar in each directon.
Dixon Mills (Tristan Wilds) aka NuBrandon
Argument for: Two hours in and no love interest in sight? Either Dixon is really interested in LaCrosse or the 90210 producers have other plans for Dixon. Arguments against: Considering how this new 90210 seems determined not to take advantage of the acting talents of NuBrandon and NuBrenda (Shenae Grimes), it looks unlikely his character will be that complex. Besides, he has no interest in his starlet grandmother's salacious memoirs.
Likelihood: One Doug Whitter. If he's gay all the clues will be stuff easily dismissed until he actually comes out.
Ethan Ward (Dustin Milligan) aka NuDylan Argument for: Mostly memories of Milligan's recent gay role on Supernatural. Arguments against: When me meet him, Ethan is caught cheating on his girlfriend Naomi (who looks like Kylie Minogue and Elizabeth Berkley's long-lost half-sister). After he breaks up with Naomi, he quickly moves on NuBrenda.
Likelihood: One Brian Kinney. He gets around but that's probably all he and Brian have in common.
Navid Shirazi (Michael Steger)
Arguments for: He seems oddly unbothered about his pornographer father's "no porn until age 21" rule, as if he had no interest in straight sexuality. From his first scene he's plugged into the West Beverly High grapevine, getting the latest dirt faster than most gossip bloggers. Besides, wouldn't it be a pretty juicy conflict if his father were nontraditional enough to make straight porn but too traditional to easily accept his son's homosexuality? Argument against: Navid could just be nu-David, who doesn't get a love life until later.
Likelihood:
Five Terris. If he's gay he can keep making his life about everyone else.
Ty Collins (Adam Gregory)
Arguments for: He's the lead in school production of Spring Awakening, which brings up the whole musical theatre stereotype. His long history of breaking female classmates' hearts might suggest repeated attempts to find a beard while backing out before the relationship gets too physical. Also, he's got Luke Snyder bangs. Argument against: Was his making out with nu-Brenda as convincing to you as it was to nu-Dylan? Meet the rest of the guys after the jump!
Likelihood:
Four Jack McPhees. Nice artistic guys frequently end up in the 'gay' column.
Ryan Matthews (Ryan Eggold) Argument for: His first line is a catty comment about the looks of the school news anchor, and he gets even more catty when he verbally spars with spoiled rich girl Naomi. Argument against: His interest in Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth) seems genuinely romantic.
Likelihood:
Two Kyle Lendos. Most likely a straight guy who could handle himself in a duel of one-liners against team gay.
George Evans (Kellan Lutz) Argument for: He's an arrogant, loudmouth jock constantly looking to assert his alpha male-ness, which suggests a touch of trying too hard ... and was I the only one detecting a bit of hoyay in his relationship with Ethan? Argument against: Sometimes an alpha male is overcompensating for other things.
Likelihood:

LOVED the redo!!
I was preparing for disappointment when I watched the season premiere but I have to say that I was jumping for joy b/c the redo is actually awesome! I especially loved Tabitha, the alcoholic mother (loved the actress in Arrested Development too). She practically steals the show! And I'll say for the record that just the one episode far outweighs anything that the immensly overrated Gossip Girl is putting out @ the moment. I just read my Entertainment Weekly and there are already a lot of rewrites going on w/ the new writing team for 90210 (Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah who penned Freaks and Geeks and Life as We Know It). And it should also be noted that these two only have a contract for 13 epi's so continuity could be a problem. Anywho...on to the question.
Anything and everything I've seen about 90210 has stated that the gay character will be a man, not a girl, because they didn't want any comparisons to the OC with their faux les s/l and having a gay man (regardless of whether this is based in fact) is seen as more titilating, plus they want to outdo what's been going on with the Eric character on Gossip Girl (which hasn't been much frankly). So...those are the rumors and such.
Now, based on what I saw in the premiere, and assuming we're not getting smoke blown up our asses about there being a gay character, I'd have to go w/ Navid Shirazi (Michael Steger). He was completely uninterested in women throughout the entire epi, especially when he went to his father's porn set and the women were kissing and hugging him like he was their best bud. No reaction except to raid craft services which would not in any way shape or form be the typical reaction for a straight male high schooler. Compare that to the reaction of Dixon who practically had his tongue hanging on the floor and who was oggling every girl there was to oggle throughout the entire two hours, plus there's already some confirmation that he and Silver (the blogger girl) will be hooking up (provided they aren't rewriting that as I type this). Ethan and Annie are being set up as the golden couple and the puppy dog thing w/ the pentapus @ the end and the heartbreak on Ethan's face when he saw Annie kissing Ty would suggest it ain't happening there and that wouldn't be a big tada moment either. George seems like a just a foil for Ethan so I don't know that he'd get a full out story that doesn't involve revenge on Ethan, plus he seemed genuinely stoked about hooking up with Naomi. We could do the whole "he's in musical theater" stereotype with Ty but I think he's sort of the male slut of 90210 if they keep him around...although I also think he's being used as a foil for Ethan in his relationship with Annie. Ryan Matthews--nope, he's for Kelly. So...my bet's on Navid.
But we should also keep an open-mind about Harry's just learned about son from his high school days w/ his old gf. If he finds him and brings him home...who knows? But for right now, I'm going w/ Navid. And how interesting would that be!! A gay man with some flavor??!! Now THAT would be a surprise!
Agreed about loving the first ep...
However, I adore Jessica Walter and her tall glasses of "iced tea", she was one of the casting bits I was looking forward to seeing (as well as Wilds and Grimes) Walter on the show and she hasn't disappointed. I hope Wilds and Grimes get storylines worthy of them eventually, both are great actors.

if they are going to make one of them gay why not both of them? both of them need a love intrest, so this could be good. but I will admit that its unlikely. my fav. girl so far is silver and the main one, I forgot her name already, silver made a bigger impression on me.

Fun to theorize, but...
...I'm thinking if anyone's going to be a gay character on this new 90210, it's going to be a female character, (probably Silver, as she seemed to have some openmindedness in this area). I'd love it if one of the male characters were to be revealed as gay, but I get the feeling this show isn't going to go that route. I hope I'm wrong.
If I were going to pick one of the male characters as gay, I'd guess the Ty character, (strong resemblance to Tom Welling, btw), or perhaps the dumb jock minor character who pushed Dixon and started the fight.
Okay, don't ask me why but
Okay, don't ask me why but I'd guess if any it's gonna be Ryan Matthews more for the fact that he threw my gaydar into the red when I saw the group pic at the top. My eyes just got fixed on him, and my brain was screaming he's definitely the one who's walkin on sunshine. lol
Second guess would either have to be Navid or George because Navid's family life is just begging for a twist like that and George because from past TV outings it almost always involves one of the most manly men on the show.

The gay on 90210
I like the Ty Colllins and Navid Shirazi being a gay couple, buta want to throw in Navid could be blackmailing uber jock George Evans who is a closet case if I ever saw one. I think he could be the Nu-Steve Sanders. And isn't Navid really the Nu-Gabrielle Carteris. Pluss were there any guys on the porn set they went to.

He's the one who plucked the magic twanger on my gaydar. Though I'm wishfully thinking it could be nuDylan. I mean, yeah, let's have a couple. If they do, I'll bet they're doin' it before Nuke gets laid.
However, I think I read a few months back that it's Ryan Egold's character who's gay. Can't remember where I read that, of course.
I didn't like the first episode, btw, and I forgot to watch the second. Maybe next week. Or maybe GOSSIP GIRL is just enough rich bitch to last an entire week.
The real question is...
Which one of these guys DOESN'T set of my gaydar?
