HBO to get "Shameless" with a US remake?

Gay inclusive dramedy Shameless is still going strong in the UK and now the series might get an American remake courtesy of HBO and the man behind megahit ER, John Wells.

Shameless follows the follows the dysfunctionally functional Gallagher family, who manage to survive despite an absent mother and an alcoholic father. The family includes a gay son, Ian, who starts out the series closeted and having an affair with his similarly-closeted Muslim boss, Kash. Even though Shameless has a large cast, that hasn't been an excuse to make Ian yet another "barely there gay" and his love life has come up frequently.

I don't envy the casting director for this project. Whoever takes on the Steve role will have to make us Shameless fans forget all about James McAvoy (who originally played the character), for one. Still, I have a few suggestions for some of the series' gay and gay-adjacent characters.

Check out some potential Chatsworth Estate resident recasts after the break!

Shameless' lead gay, Ian Gallagher, tends to keep his emotions to himself, albeit with a lot of nervous energy, and often isn't very good at seeing the bigger picture. That might be a good role for Malcolm in the Middle's Eric Per Sullivan to demonstrate how he's grown up as an actor.

Ian starts out having an affair with married Muslim Kash Karib who runs the only shop in the area with his wife. Perhaps its just the my crush speaking but I keep imagining Kash's American counterpoint as Maulik Pancholy (Weeds, 30 Rock).

Running the local pub is Jez, who has to know when to keep the drinks flowing or when to cut off her deadbeat customers who haven't paid off their tab in ages. We've seen Beth Grant play tough businesswomen in Jericho and Pushing Daisies and I could see her telling Frank Gallagher that he's cut off.

Okay, I can't resist casting one straight character because she's growing to be one of my favorites. Kash's conservative wife Yvonne is a sharp-tongued shopkeeper who constantly has an eye on the bottom line and doesn't take any grief from her customers. (When one customer complained about the cookies she was buying, hoping for a discount, Yvonne smashed the cookies into crumbs and offered them for free.)

She may be busy if HBO picks up another British remake (she's in their remake of the camptastic Suburban Shootout) I can imagine Judy Greer in the role — remember her as the vengeance-minded Kitty Sanchez on Arrested Development?

What do you think, Shameless fans? Do you have much hope for the potential remake? Who would you cast as your favorite Chatsworth Estate resident?

    Oh dear God NO!

I love this show too much to see it ruined.

Does anyone know when (if?) it's coming back to sundance?

    I don't know when...

I don't know when but it should be returning to Sundance eventually. As I recall, they've purchased up to season five. As a big Shameless fan (I'm looking forward to seeing more Maguires) I'm watching for the arrival of more episodes. If I can manage it, any new episodes will be in the Queerview.

    Shameful to Remake Shameless

Why can't HBO just import the original?  It's fabulous and it would be nice to have some shows in the US with folks from other countries speaking in their original accents.   love, love love this show and don't want to see it taken out of context.  Plus the whole public assistance situation in the US is so radically different that I just can't see it being handled well or with any balance or nuance.

    HOWEVER,

Love the fantasy casting thing so I think Beth Grant is awesome but I don't really see her as  Jez.   I could see Brett Butler as the hard living, lesbian bar keep

    Brett Butler = Jez

Vanessa Marano (formerly of Gilmore Girls) = Debbie

    Billy Campbell = Frank

    Erm...

Who is that woman in the blue suit next to Beth Grant? Are those both pictures of Beth Grant? Because that's definitely not the original Jez.

    Erik not Eric

I know, I know, I'm being picky, but its Erik Per Sullivan not Eric.
