David Johnson sings about his love for David Hasselhoff on "America's Got Talent"

Yesterday I wondered how America's Got Talent would treat gay acts this season. Last season several queer acts were given the chance to win the audience's vote and last night's premiere raised my hopes for how queer contestants would be treated this year.

One gay-themed act featured loan officer David Johnson, who promised that he'd be singing a song he wrote about his high school crush, a star from Baywatch. While AGT tried to lead the audience to believe the song would be about Pamela Anderson (in the show's usual heavy-handed way), my gaydar was set off by the way Johnson carefully avoided gender-specific words. Sure enough, when he hit the stage, his song turned out to be an ode to judge David Hasselhoff.

Johnson's song started out badly. He doesn't have a great voice and the opening lyrics sounded rather stalker-ish but his performance quickly developed a cheesy, silly charm with lines like, "I'd spoon you the whole night through, even if you had the flu, David Hasselhoff." The audience quickly switched from boos to cheers.

While it's not clear if Johnson is gay, his performance gave America's Got Talent the opportunity to make the kind of jokes we saw So You Think You Can Dance make with Misha and Mitch's audition, jokes that AGT smartly avoided. The soundtrack to his entrance and exit was "Hungry Eyes", which didn't stress the fact that the song was about a same-sex crush. Meanwhile, the teasing that Piers Morgan gave Hasselhoff would easily have applied if a woman sang the song.

Meanwhile, one of the audition montage sequences showed another gay act, The New York City Gay Men's Chorus, making it through to the next round. Check out the clip of Johnson's performance below.

    Clever

The singing may have not been much, but he seems to have potential as a comedy songwriter.  The reaction was perfect for its non-homophobia!

    Gay or not...

Looks like he's going for the Stephen Lynch/Jonathan Coulton vibe. I think that's a type of act not seen on AGT before and would be a welcome addition.

    not...

sorry to burst any bubbles, but he is happily married to a woman.  he's a friend of mine and i was there for the taping of the performance... it's amazing what editting can do.  of course during the taping they did question his sexuality in a round about way before he said he was married and the camera panned around to show his wife.  it wouldn't be reality tv if they did screw with reality.  also, he does have a really nice voice.  he was terribly nervous as i think most people who aren't used to performing would be.

    Yay Dave!

    I had a feeling...

...that may be the case, which is why I stopped to note that regardless of his sexual orientation, the show could have used his performance to make a homophobic joke and didn't. You don't have to be gay to be subjected to homophobia.

As you note, these shows edit the performances and interviews down to push a narrative (in this case, maintaining an illusion that the song may be genuine) and AGT struck the right note, they captured why Johnson's performance was funny without demeaning a gays.

    Songs of David

Hope that he has more songs in this genre, wonder what he'll do to Piers next! There is soooooo much more potential with Piers... especially after the BK ad!

    interesting

What's interesting is that it's totally cute and funny without being homophobic... but I can't put into words why it's funny without making it sound offensive. I guess part of the humour is just that it's unexpected.

I really liked this act. I thought it was sweet. But I can't imagine what he's going to do for the next round. It will be harder because we'll be expecting him to be funny this time, and he'll have lost the element of surprise.

    David Johnson

While the song itself is kind of hoaky, what makes this work is his humor. The question of sexuality is what gives it all a twist, and ultimatly makes it work. He can play guitar, he can probably sing better than he did - the song itself was the focus, not the singing, and he is very funny. Terry Fator won last year because he was multitallented. He could sing while doing impressions without opening his mouth - and he was funny. If this guy has David H. out of his system now, I hope to see something a bit more realistic from him to showcase whatever real tallent he has. I kind of figured he was married and that is was all an act.
