Gay Reality TV Alert: Beauty and the Geek cast includes a "Self Proclaimed 'Gaysian'"

After Big Brother and American Idol raised our hopes (and then quickly disappointed us), another reality show looks ready to make new strides in gay inclusiveness. The CW guilty pleasure Beauty and the Geek has announced its new cast and one of the geeks, Greg, is listed as a "Self Proclaimed 'Gaysian'".

Beauty and the Geek varied its formula a bit last season when they introduced a team with a female geek and a male beauty (Sam, pictured here). This season it looks like they're continuing to add twists to their cast by giving us the show's first openly gay geek. (Though, really, "Self Proclaimed"? Do CW execs think it's that unusual a term?)

Greg also stands out among the list of Geeks for his occupation: unlike the other geek's who have jobs that put them behind a desk, Greg is listed as a "clothing designer/pastry chef". That certainly raises my stereotype alarms ... were all the gay computer programmers too busy to send in a tape?

However, if you were hoping the inclusion of a gay geek would also bring gay guy to the Beauties, keep hoping. All of these Beauties have female names.

Greg isn't the only Geek who sounds like a step away from a typical, Beauty and the Geek cast, as castmate Jason is described as "One Buff Geek".

The show is promising additional twists this season. Zap2It is reporting that Beauties and Geeks won't be paired up as in past seasons. This time, there will be a team of Geeks and a team of Beauties who will compete against each other, changing the social dynamics of the show.

We'll be keeping an eye on this one. At the least it'll be good to see a gay guy on a show that uses a Pet Shop Boys song for its opening theme. I'll keep my fingers crossed that BatG doesn't drop the ball the way Idol and Big Brother have.
