Russell Tovey's "Being Human" coming to BBC America on July 25

Aidan Turner, Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow be Human

We have another date to add to your summer gay TV calendar. On July 25, Being Human is set to make its debut on BBC America, with out actor Russell Tovey dealing with the the struggles of being a twentysomething ... while also being a werewolf.

While you wait for the debut, you can check out Michael's reaction to the premiere. If that's not enough to get you hyped, the series promises plenty of "nude transforming scenes" for the AfterElton.com Hot 100 pick.

Meanwhile, I wonder if this offers any further clues to when Torchwood: Children of Earth will air. We know it will be airing sometime in July and doesn't that sound like a good opportunity to promote BBC America's next sci-fi import?

Update: BBC America announced more good news for gay fans of BBC science fiction. The network will air the current season of Doctor Who, which consists of five specials and features the swan songs for both producer Russell T. Davies and tenth Doctor David Tennant,

Fan favorites from Davies' run will also return in the specials, including John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness. The first special, "The Next Doctor", will air on June 27 with the second, "Planet of the Dead" airing in July.

    Such fun!

Really, this series was such fun when I watched it, and the concept of a neurotic werewolf was played so well.  Tovey is really a gem.  While I didn't really care for the later part, with the vampire war and such, the interactions of the roommates made this series a must watch for me.  My only concern is BBC America editing out the not-inconsiderable amount of Tovey tushie in the series to satisfy American prudishness.  It was particularly on display in the original pilot, which may or may not air as part of the series, since they recast the actress playing the ghost between the "pilot" and episode one.

Just a great, original series, can't say enough about it.

    The original pilot will not

The original pilot will not be airing as part of the season, only the six "official" episodes.

    Yes!

I am so excited to see this finally coming to BBC America. I have seen the pilot and really enjoyed it. Tovey was the strongest of the original actors so its good that he stayed with the development of the eventual series. I am anxious to see how the story evolves. And you can't have enough Tovey tushie. BTW both the ghost and the vampire were recast prior to the series.

    Another one to love

I really loved Being Human and was actively happy when the BBC decided to commission another series. I sort of agree about the vampire war taking up too much of the storyline, but it did provide for an absolutely fantastic finale. And the way the ghost grew throughout the series really grabbed me. Strangely, in some ways the werewolf arc was the weakest of the three - although still a damn good story. Like everyone else, I hope BBC America doesn't cut all the nude scenes with Tovey. One of the great things about a naked Tovey is that he has a normal body - which is incredibly sexy. He doesn't have one of those impossibly sculpted torsos that make lesser men feel inadequate. And those ears... oh yeah.

The ghost and the vampire had to be recast from the pilot because the BBC spent too much time faffing about deciding whether to commission a series and the two actors had found other jobs (they also wanted more contemporary vampires in the series so they needed to change the look). Out of all the series, I think my favourite - apart from the finale - was the paedophile episode (not a spoiler). It managed to be funny and human and absolutely horrifying on so many different levels. A great piece of acting and writing.

    Hope people enjoy it.

    Haha!

I thought I was the only one who liked Russell Tovey's ears! :-)

Agree about the finale, when George was locked in the room with the head vampire, what an incredible scene but it's the scene with George *after*, where he's talking to his girlfriend (who it's implied is going to be a werewolf? werewoman? too because of the scratches on her arm) and says in repsonse to the question "What's it like": "There aren't words", Mr. Tovey's acting is incredible.

I watched the whole series via downloading it via BitTorrent, so there's no way I'm going to watch BBC America's "commercials every 5 minutes" cut.  I do look forward to the second season, I think the ending hinted that the older man was a reporter and he's going to expose the three of them via Annie's scumbag fiance.  Thoughts?

BTW, if you're a Russell Tovey fan and haven't seen it yet, rent or download the adaptation of Dicken's Little Dorrit, where he plays the turnkey at a debtor's prison John Chivery, who is in love with Amy Dorrit but is spurned.  There's a couple of scenes in it where Mr. Tovey is so incredible as an actor, so heartbreaking as the man who knows his love will never be returned, it takes the breath away. Sadly, it's Victorian England, so he's fully clothed. :-(

Oh, those Doctor Who episodes are very poor, IMVHO, I'm glad Tennant/Davies are leaving, they've been coasting for the last season.  Stephen Moffat is a terrific writer, I can't wait to see his take on The Doctor.
