David Tennant officially leaving "Doctor Who" ... who should be the eleventh Doctor?

I've been spending (what's felt like) years scoffing at rumors about Russel E. Davies and David Tennant's impending departure from the venerable Doctor Who franchise and that speculation has finally turned out to be true, as Tennant has announced that he will be stepping down as the tenth Doctor. He'll be leaving after the current season, which will be made up of four specials instead of the usual 13 episodes, the same time Davies will be quitting the franchise.

Russell Tovey and Patterson Joseph

On the bright side, if you've been following the speculation on who could be the eleventh Doctor, this could be a chance for the BBC to break new ground. Among the potential new Doctors is Russell Tovey, an openly gay actor, as well as Patterson Joseph, who would be the first person of color to play the Doctor. Either move would be a nice nod to Davies' legacy which has included the first queer companion (the fan favorite Captain Jack Harkness) as well as the first two companions of color (Mickey Smith and Dr. Martha Jones).

But who else could be the eleventh Doctor?

Captain Jack, Mickey Smith and Martha Jones

While Tovey is best known for his role in The History Boys, Who fans might also recognize him from the most recent Christmas special, "The Voyage of the Damned". Joseph, meanwhile, should look familiar to Anglophiles from roles on Jeckyll, That Mitchell and Webb Look, The Green Wing and Peep Show. He also appeared in the two-part Who finale, "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways" as a contestant on a deadly version of The Weakest Link.

Tovey and Joseph in their past Who roles

Plenty of other names have been thrown around. Steven Moffat, who will be taking over Doctor Who after Davies and Tennant's departure, is known for casting actors he has successfully worked with before. In addition to Joseph (who worked with Moffat on Jeckyll), James Nesbitt (who starred in Jeckyll) and Coupling heartthrob Richard Coyle have been mentioned as potential eleventh Doctors. There's been much more talk about Nesbitt in the role, but I have a much easier time seeing Colye as The Doctor.

James Nesbitt and Richard Coyle

I'd love to suggest another openly gay Brit, Matthew Bose, whose stunning good looks made a definite impression on me when he appeared on an episode of Coupling. Unfortunately, whenever I see Emmerdale (where Bose plays a gay character, Paul Labert) viewers discuss Bose, it doesn't sound like he'd have the acting chops to be the Doctor.

Matthew Bose

I could more easily see Kevin McKidd as the Doctor. McKidd is probably best known for his role on Rome, a show that found a definite gay following for its over-the-top dramatics and its frequent male nudity, but I expect plenty of his gay fans first noticed him playing gay on Bedrooms and Hallways, where he got to snog the hunky James Purefoy. Then again, after seeing what he could do a dramatic role on The Riches, it'd certainly be interesting to see what gay fave comedian Eddie Izzard would do with the role.

Kevin McKidd and Eddie Izzard

Of course, from this side of the pond the fantasy casting game isn't so easy to play. Christopher Eccleston was barely on my radar before he became the ninth Doctor (despite my owning a copy of Shallow Grave) and, having missed Viva Blackpool!, Doctor Who was my first exposure to David Tennant's greatness. Which UK actors would make a great Doctor?

Eddie Izzard? Would be the Most Amazing Doctor EVER!

    hm... I think the Doctor

hm... I think the Doctor needs a certain edge to him - so I wouldn't like to see a too traditionally good-looking softcheeks doctor. I definitely would rule out Mr Bose, sorry ;)

And I think the new Doctor needs to be distinctly different from David Tennant.

I just took an instant liking to Patterson Joseph, but can't really explain why.

Russel Tovey - as much as I like him - just looks a bit too young. As would James Sutton.

I still like the idea of Richard E Grant, though :)

    I really could start

I really could start sobbing at any second. With Russel T. Davies AND David Tennant leaving...my life has no meaning.

What am I going to do without David Tennant? Why, David?!!!! WHY?!!!!

I'll really miss David as Doctor Who, but to throw something into the mix that is completely unlikely and pretty much impossible...how about James McAvoy?

Eddie Izzard as Doctor Who would be absolutely amazing...what are the chances that he would get the role? Has there really been talk about Eddie taking on the role, or is that just an AfterElton recommendation?

    Although it would be nice...

...I don't think you'll see McKidd as a doctor anywhere but in Seattle on Grey's Anatomy.

    A bold suggestion...

I've often wondered, given the way the Doctor regenerates, why this time he couldn't regenerate as a woman? Wouldn't that make for a fab moment? The dramatic regeneration effects blast the screen with light, and when we can see again, we have a female Doctor. Why not? It would certainly take the franchise in an untapped new direction and give some awesome British actress a kick-ass chance to rock the Tardis. Just sayin'.

    Joanna Lumley

I think they should go a COMPLETELY different direction and cast Joanna Lumley or Minnie Driver.
    Brock Savage's picture

    I nominate

As far as I know, there has never been any explanation given as to why the Doctor couldn't regenerate as a woman. If I'm wrong, please correct.

Though Russel Tovey is awfully cute, I still vote for a woman.

My choice would be Dawn French. 2nd choice, executive tranvestite Eddie Izzard, then Richard Coyle.

The Doctor can't be a woman...

I'm quoting a friend of mine who answered this same question for someone just today:

"Time Lords are Dioecious. There are Time Lords and Time Ladies. They can change their bodies but not their genders."

    I think

I think whoever takes over will be good. I can't wait to see what the speicals and new season in 2010 will be like. A friend of mine is up for a part in the 5th series and if what he says about 5th series is true the new series will be better then the last series.

As much as DT was wonderful

As much as DT was wonderful as the Doctor (and CE was great too!), I think it IS time for a regeneration (which is only fitting with RTD's exit as well). Any of the suggestions by BBC Anglophile & yerself could be a good fit (I think Eddie Izzard would be perfect myself). There's someone else that was mentioned awhile ago amongst the fans that I forgot about (along with the hilarious notion of Jennifer Saunders- of which if that did happen, would most likely last one episode, maybe for for a "Children In Need" special).

    Fabulous Eddie

Eddie Izzard would be a fabulous Dr. Who ... but he's not gay. He's a transvestite ... and he's been very clear in numerous interviews that he's straight - fancies women -at best he's a self-described "male lesbian".

    My $0.02

I actually really like the idea of Richard Coyle, he's a quirky actor and could take the part in any number of ways.

The other thing to consider, of course, is that when the Doctor regenerates, the new incarnation will have a new personality to play with (as when the abrupt and morose Christopher Eccleston became the effusive and passionate David Tenant). So, I guess we should also be asking, what kind of Doctor do we want next?

For my money, I loved Tom Baker's take on the role where he could be whimsical or threatening as he saw fit but he was always completely alien. And Sylvester McCoy's machiavellian Doctor of the later eps was also an interesting idea.

One thing I would like to see though, is a fallible Doctor. RTD fell in love with the character a bit too much during his run and the Doctor was at risk of becoming confused with God, which didn't make for great drama.

    virgo108's picture

    Dr. Donna?

Wouldn't be great if the Doctor regenerated into Dr. Donna? I loved Catherine Tate in the last series, especially in the final episodes.

    Russell Tovey is way, way,

Russell Tovey is way, way, way too young. He may be able to pull off the fun side of the Doctor, but would lack the necessary gravitas of a thousands-year-old being.

    No Stunt Casting, please...

I don't claim to be an expert on British actors, but I think the show would be best served if it avoided a "name actor" to be Doc Eleven. Hiring an actor who most people don't really "know" from previous work gives the show a better chance to formulate the new characterization of the Doctor.  Every regeneration is expected to have a distinctly different personality, but if they hire an actor known for specific work prior to the Doctor, it's harder to see them as The Doctor, which is one of British TV's iconic roles.   Though Catherine Tate turned out to be seven levels of awesome as Donna Noble, many who already knew her from her sketch comedy show spoke disparagingly of the casting and seemed less willing to give her a chance, even though she originally only appeared in one special episode. Many just assumed when Tate was brought in full-time that she would be slapstick-y and turn the show into vaudeville, which was of course not the case.  Still, I constantly heard people comment on how she did a certain scene like (*insert sketch character*), as if they couldn't fully immerse themselves in the show.  (I'd never seen her show, so I couldn't join in!)

Every time we regenerate the Doctor, people suggest going female or various ethnicities, but it never goes beyond the fans' wish lists.  Personally, I think there are distinct Time Lords and Time Ladies, though it was never properly spelled out in the series.  As for the age issue, I would like them to step away from this trend of having the Doctor looking younger every time he regenerates.  Though I see why they do it (the general youthifying of TV over the decades), I think the role would benefit from the "appearance" of a bit more age, even if it's just eight or ten years.  He will never look his true age, so it's all relative...you know, all that timey-wimy stuff.

    MARTIN FREEMAN!...MARTIN FREEMAN!...MARTIN FREEMAN!

If David really must go...I can't think of anyone better to take over than the brilliantly sweet and goofy Martin Freeman of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy...HELL of an actor too!
    Psionycx's picture

    Doctor...Who?

Tom Baker, just to be an instigator, raised the notion of a female Doctor when he announced that he was leaving the role.  That said, it's never been seen or mentioned that a Time Lord can switch genders.

The Doctor seems to have an individual flaw that he can't control what he regenerates into.  It has been implied that the Master could control the process and his form.  We know for a fact that Romana and the Rani can control their regenerations and what they turn into.  Romana was even able to try on some rather radical (and somewhat non-Gallifreyan looking) shapes while regenerating.

Personally I rather like a godlike Doctor.  He's an exceptional individual from the most technologically advanced race in the universe.  It would be kind of odd for him to a dodderer given that (dare I raise the spectre of the sixth Doctor?).

They do need to give him a distinctive look though.  Another brown-haired fellow would be too close to Tennant.  Maybe something ginger...

I'M FEELING RICHARD COYLE or Eddie Izzard. I love Russell Tovey

but I really want him to stay on the upcoming BBC show "Being Human" as the gay warewolf character so I can't support him leaving it for DR. WHO.

James Nesbitt is too David Tennant like.

The best part of the transformation is that it should be a dude who looks totally different.

I don't know Patterson Joseph so I couldn't really speak to whether or not he would give good THE DOCTOR. He's got a nice twinkle in his eye though.

If I had to choose a black british actor to be the next Doctor Who it would definitely be Chiwetel Ejiofor . He's got that otherwordly charm about him and he's beautiful and I could see him flitting about time and space saving the planet.

In case you don't recall him from (Kinky Boots, Serenity, Inside Man and Dirty Pretty Things, et al):

    Not to mention, Chiwetel

Not to mention, Chiwetel Ejiofor already has some scifi cred from Serenity. I thought he did a good job of making The Operative threatening and driven while still giving him a sense of humor and empathy.

RICHARD COYLE PLEASE! Coupling is one of my all time favourite shows, he is brilliant. He would make a fantastic doctor!

I really hope they don't decide the make the doctor a woman, it would just be strange.

I cant believe you left Robert Carlyle out

I cant believe you left Robert Carlyle out of the article.

He probably has been the most speculated replacement so far, with Patterson Joseph in second. Joseph or Izzard would be great picks.

    Dave Doty's picture

    David Tennant...

...chewed the scenery far too much for my taste.  Yes, the Doctor should be eccentric, but there's eccentric and there's jumping around screaming all the time.

I wouldn't want to see Patterson Joseph for the same reason.  In Jekyll, he was so ridiculously OTT that it made James Nesbitt's high-energy performance seem almost restrained by comparison.

I'll second the Joanna Lumley recommendation... even though she was only the Doctor for about two minutes in that comedy sketch, she convinced me she had the chops to do the real thing.

I've never seen Eddie Izzard try at serious work, but if he can pull off the acting side of it, he's certainly got the flair.

Russell Tovey?  I don't know about too young.  That's what people said about Peter Davison, and he did a fine job.  However, the fact that outgoing EP Russell Davies said that he would have been his pick may actually work against him as the new crew try to set their own stamp on the series.

All I know is if they cast a minority or woman, they had better bring their A-game right out of the gate and rock the roll from day one, or their entire tenure is going to be marred by accusations of political correctness and so forth.

I was most excited to hear that they plan to stop hammering the Daleks and Cybermen until we're sick of them, and try to focus on generating new menaces.  As many new things as RTD threw at us, I don't think he even tried to create any new iconic menaces to add to the classic rogues' gallery.  And the big season enders ALWAYS featured classic series monsters.  Couldn't RTD come up with anything season finale worthy on his own?

    SO MANY POSSIBILITIES

Before I get to talking about who his replacement might be, I must take a little space to recognize how magnificent David Tennant has been in realizing the timeless role of the Doctor. His humor, intelligence and sexiness brought Doctor Who to an amazing new level. Whoever his replacement is (and however great that person might be) they will have a huge task ahead of them in filling this role after Tennant.

Richard Coyle would make a spectacular Doctor. I remember falling in love with him as Jeff on Coupling and I think he would fit right in on Doctor Who. James Nesbitt I think has the potential to make a great Doctor and Eddie Izzard would also be good, but I have a feeling his schedule might not be accomodating to when they have to shoot new episodes. I really like Patterson Joseph, particularly for his performances in the "Numberwang" skits on That Mitchell and Webb Look and as much as I love Russell Tovey (him and his incredibly sexy big ears) I don't think the role of the Doctor suits him that well. I'm more inclined to see him as a companion rather than the actual Doctor.

One really far out possibility I'd like to throw out is Hugh Laurie. I know he's doing House right now but hypothetically if he weren't doing House, doesn't everyone think he'd make a spectacular Doctor? I know I think he would.

    I'd like Russell Tovey in

I'd like Russell Tovey in the role and others sound like viable options but so does David Morrissey who is playing The Next Doctor in this year's Christmas special. I'll be sad to see David Tennant go but good luck to him and he's play a gay character in Einstein And Eddington.

    RICHARD COYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES! He'd kick much ass as the 11th doctor. Eddie Izzard is still on "The Riches" with Minnie Driver, isn't he?

If there had to be a black man for the part,my vote would Lenny Henry.

If i could choose a woman,i'd choose Naoko Mori(ex-Tosh,"Torchwood") She's already guested on Doctor Who and the idea of a female,Japanese Doctor Who kind of appeals to me in a weird way.
