Doctor Who? And the new Doctor is ... Matt Smith
This weekend Doctor Who fans finally learned who would play the eleventh Doctor after David Tennant leaves the role. Matt Smith will take up steering the TARDIS and saving the universe when the series returns for its fifth season. Interestingly, while Smith's list of TV roles isn't very long, he's shared the small screen with Doctor Who alum Billie Piper twice (in The Ruby in the Smoke and in an episode of The Secret Diary of a Call Girl) so even Stateside Who fans like me have had a chance to get an idea of what Smith might be like as the Doctor. (Trivia bit: At 25, he's the youngest actor to ever tackle the role.) More discussion and gripes after the break! Russell Tovey and Patterson Joseph Unsurprisingly, some Who fans are expressing early disappointment in the pick. Some fans were hoping to see an actor who isn't a straight, white male in the role. After all, the talk of potential Doctors included a black man, Patterson Joseph, as well as openly gay Russell Tovey. I know Smith as well as I did David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston before seeing them as the Doctor so I'll wait to judge his Timelord-worthiness, but what do you think? Did you have your hopes up for someone else (like Joseph or Tovey)? Or are you imagining Smith in the iconic role already? Submitted by on Mon, 2009-01-05 11:11. |

I don't think i can love
I don't think i can love him as much as Tennant, but then I didn't think Eccelston could be replaced either so.. we'll see! It would have been silly for it to have been the guys pictured since they've both been in Doctor Who before. I know Freema had also but its easy to say she's a cousin of that character, having a timelord who looked exactly like one of them would have been stupid, although i guess anythings possible in a sci-fi
with Moffat writing it should be awesome, and with their comments on how they found him right away and went on searching because they thought they couldn't just pick the first (or so) guy who came along, but then ended up realising it has always been him a) reminded me of a line from McDean in Hollyoaks which I am currently finding out about and b) meant they really reassured me he'd be good. and maybe the change is a good thing, it has lost its way a bit perhaps, not like the first and to some degree second series where near every episode was good or at least didn't blend into one.. altyhough Tennant is probably my favourite human i think i prefered eccleston's doctor and season 1..
thanks for reporting this!

That perfectly sums up my feelings. I couldn't imagine anyone but Eccelston in the role until I saw Tennant and I couldn't imagine liking a companion as much as Rose until Martha made her first appearance (and I couldn't imagine them Donna Noble not making me miss Martha until....)
That said, I wish if they knew from the beginning that Smith was the one they didn't keep hinting that we might get a non-traditional Doctor, with even BBC News naming Patterson Joseph, Billie Piper and Russell Tovey as frontrunners.
I like Smith
I honestly was hoping they'd go with someone younger than Tenant because my personal theory is Time Lords get younger and better looking with each regeneration, more or less. Smith is pretty cute but also kind of creepy, like a goblin. That’s also what I thought of Tennant when I first saw him, he reminded me of a goblin, but also cute.
I also like that they’ve cast an unknown, because I can’t see him as anything but the Doctor because he’s never done anything else I’ve heard of.
As for the age issue, he’s not that young. Some people are calling him a boy or a child, and say he’s too young to pull it off. I say that there are lots of young characters in this universe, Rose was 19 when she first met the Doctor and Ianto is 25, so why not have a Doctor who younger. I think it could also highlight that he isn’t want he seems. He looks like a human man but he’s an ancient alien, and having him seem too young to have all this wisdom could really hammer in the fact that he’s not what he seems. Also it has potential to be a running gag, "but you're too young to be a doctor." Kind of thing.
He needs a haircut, because, um yeah. Also his facial structure is interesting, it's like a cross between James Marsters and David Boreanaz from Buffy almost.
I'm sure that Moffat and
I'm sure that Moffat and his team will do great work, but yeah, I must admit I'm a bit disappointed they didn't give the role to someone who isn't a straight, white guy.

It's not an easy role to play.
The actor is asked to portray a believable quasi-immortal alien. That's not your average assignment. I know Moffet wanted to give the role to an older actor, and that they auditioned people for nearly a month before choosing Matt Smith. Apparently he honestly was the best they could find, in spite of their own reservations about his age.
Matt is perfect!

Jack's response
Capt. Jack: Hello
Doctor: Stop it
Capt. Jack: I was just saying - wait...Doctor? But you're so young.
Doctor:...
Capt. Jack: I mean you look good.
Doctor: I thought I said stop it.
I'm really wondering...
It definitely bugs me that they chose someone that young. I know, irony of "his age versus his appearance" is interesting, but he's over 900 yrs. old, so he's always going to look younger than he is. I guess "gravitas" means more to me than some people. It's kind of "understood" for plot purposes that the guest-characters will oddly stand back and take orders from this guy they just met, but the younger the Doc appears, the harder it will be to justify this plot conceit. I really couldn't imagine a companion like Donna willing to take this one seriously, no matter how smart he appears via dialogue. This means the companion(s) will probably have to be younger, which makes me nervous since the show has, up to this point, managed to balance the ages and keep it from looking like a teen soap opera.
The idea that Time Lords get younger as they keep regenerating is up for debate for me, since Gallifrey's halls of power seemed populated with older (50-plus) actors when we saw it back in the old series.
At this rate, the actor hired for Doc 12 will be subject to child labor laws.
