MTV's Human Giant: Gay porn ghosts and Will Arnett's sex tape

Despite hearing good things about MTV's sketch comedy Human Giant, I never got around to checking out the first season. However, I've been watching the second season and the trio of Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer are great at the kind of absurd comedy that I've previously enjoyed from the likes of The Kids in the Hall, The State and, currently, That Mitchell and Webb Look. The first two episodes this season also included a couple of sketches that could be added to the list of great gay sketch comedy.

The season premiere included a sketch about a man who survives a car accident that kills "the greatest gay porn star who ever lived" and finds himself haunted by his ghost. As one would expect the jokes rely heavily on sexual innuendo, including some visual gags. While the sketch uses some gross-out humor, the overall tone isn't about how gay sex is icky. Check it out below, though the clip is NSFW:

Meanwhile, last week's episode had a sketch were a paparazzo sneaks into a celebrity charity party by putting on a paper mask of Mary-Kate Olsen that hilariously fools everyone, including Will Arnett, playing a fictionalized version of himself. Eventually, Arnett takes "Mary-Kate" back to his hotel room and, while the rest of the comedy is about Arnett's sexual appetite, it's another instance where Human Giant avoids using gay sexuality merely as cringe humor. This one is also NSFW:

Unfortunately, not all sketches can be winners. Last night's show had two sketches that I didn't enjoy. With one, two basketball buddies are approached by a guy who kinda looks like Rich Uncle Pennybags offering them a million dollars for sex with their third buddy. They quickly agree and their friend is dragged off into the millionaire's limo. Thankfully, this sketch ended quickly since it was mostly an unfunny rape joke. Another sketch focused on a country band who lets their banjo player sing for the first time. The audience is initially thrilled to hear him spout ultra-conservative viewpoints in his lyrics, but falls silent when he reaches a line coming out in favor of gay marriage and saying that Jesus was gay. The sketch never quite hits the comic extremes most Human Giant sketches reach. Still, no show can get a hit on every effort (see: Space, Gays in) and Human Giant's overall record this season is pretty strong.
