IMHO "Greek" (2.21): A legacy for Heath
Last night's Greek included only a small amount of gay Omega Chi Calvin (and none of his new sexual-tension-inspiring roommate Grant)but it did give a lot of unexpected screen time to another Greek gay: Calvin's ex, Heath. Honestly, I tuned in with an appetite to find out what's next for Calvin and Grant, tempting me to give this episode a sideways-arrow, but the unexpected focus on Heath made up for the general lack of Calvin. But before we get into any further discussion, watch out for the SPOILERS below... It's homecoming week, which means that the campus fraternities and sororities are getting ready for the homecoming float competition. The Kappa Taus consider blowing off their entry until they remember the current KT motto: "Let Rusty do it." To Rusty's surprise, however, Heath wants to help out. He explains that he's looking to create a legacy for himself, because after "three years in the house ... all I'm known for is liking foosball and guys." Hopefully, a memorable float will have future KTs talking about him long after his graduation.
Heath and Rusty team up Working with the ZBZs, Rusty and Heath take Casey's initial design (which, uhm, looks like Casey designed it) and manage to improve it. Unfortunately, the truck breaks down on the way to the contest (how far is it from the KT house to the football field, anyway?). That means that the Omega Chi/IKI float (which depicts a Lego Anthony and Cleopatra) looks likely to win, thanks to a bit of engineering that has the Lego couple kiss. Heath sees his legacy slipping away and Rusty tries to convince him that there will be more chances in the future. However, Heath reveals that he is graduating early, thanks to a high school courseload heavy in AP classes. Still, Heath manages to earn his legacy, after all, when he comes up with the idea of sabotaging Anthony and Cleopatra, turning their kiss into something more suggestive. One nice moment in the episode left me a bit confused, though. When Rusty asks Heath why he and Calvin broke up, Heath starts talking about pitchers and catchers, which gets Rusty worrying that Heath may lack the same filters that Patti Stanger is missing, but it turns out Heath was saying that he's clueless about sports, which got in the way of their relationship. That didn't sound familiar to me and sent me searching for Brian's recap of the Halvin breakup, which disagrees with Heath. So, is this a retcon? I guess we'll find out when we see what happens with Calvin and Grant.
The planned Anthony & Cleopatra kiss and Heath's revision While I'm a little saddened to see Heath go away, this was a nice way to send the character off. Until now, we've known him as Calvin's ex first and a Kappa Tau second. This episode turned things around, working out his legacy with viewers as well. It's too bad that we didn't learn about Heath's academic history until he was getting ready for graduation. One thing I find interesting about Cappie is how he balances his studies and partying, and I wish this revelation about Heath came out in time to explore the similarly between him and Cappie. Next week's finale promises more of the endless Cappie/Casey romance which means I'll be desperately hoping for a B-storyline, hopefully one that includes Calvin. In the meantime, what did you think of this episode? Submitted by on Tue, 2009-06-09 17:26. |

what about...
It's possible that it isn't retcon, but Heath not willing to talk about the real reason, so he makes something up that a straight guy might buy. I mean, what straight guy hasn't dumped a hot girl because she doesn't share his taste in sports, right?
Saying "I screwed around on him" might have just been too much honesty for Heath.
Heath comment on Pitcher/Catcher
Um, the Pitcher/Catcher comment by Heath when he says "You know there's a pitcher and a catcher. Well, I'm not into sports." was a simple "clean" tv way to say he's "versatile" and Calvin is not. And that would definitely be a deal breaker for many-a-couple.
Remember Heath played basketball in an early episode and "encountered" Calvin on the court. He obviously does like sports so the comment was a metaphor which is what you need to tactfully communicate certain ideas on ABC Family.
So people break up
Because of the "pitcher/catcher" thing, Thats just weird.
And its a weird thing to use as a closer for that story line.
I assumed he was joking.
Heath's not back next year?
Heath's not back next year? Damn. Tell me they're not ditching Beaver too... The banter between those two was always funny, and Beaver's probably my favourite secondary character.
I think it's a testament to the amount of continuity effort they put into the characters that they gave a relatively minor character such a specific send-off. I'm always really impressed with the ways they develop the random sorority/fraternity members with little details.
Heath is graduating early...
This was one of the best Greek yet
Heath is/was the most non-stereotypical gay guys in the show. I can't see him tuning in on Project Runway, America's Top Models, or Rue Paul at all yall. Loved his semi bromance with Beaver from the time he came out and everyone was relieved that he wasn't nailing Beaver on hitting on his little sister to the time that Beaver was gushing about hitting on Freshman girls and Heath gave him a cold "knuckle". Gosh - when have we seen a gay student going to med school? No - we have "Beautiful People" with the REALLY gay kids. Or we have Glee with the "other standard gay kid", or we have ----- let's hope that the BFF on Secret Life isn't a media major or lead in the school play
God, I loved Heath and will be sorry to see him leave the show.
Loved Heath
I was surprised to see Heath too in this epi but I was glad it happenned!
Altho, one little thing... Has he been packing up some weight? I don't remember seeing the little bit of double chin he was sporting. Not that I mind :)
Anyway, I hope we'll see some of Grant in the finally but I honestly doubt it. I guess we'll have to wait season 3!
