IMHO "Greek" Finale (2.22): "At World's End"
This week's Greek season finale finally let Calvin and Grant get together, setting them up for a romance next season. More importantly, however, we also got some more of the odd friendship between Calvin and the born-again, purity-pledged Dale. So, for now, Greek has my hopes up for the upcoming season (starting August 31) with an episode that showed how the boundary-pushing ABC Family hit doesn't get lazy with its supporting cast. Watch out for SPOILERS if you venture any further... This week we got back to Calvin's (Paul James) attempts to resist his attraction to his Omega Chi roommate, Grant (Gregory Michael). Calvin's still avoiding Grant by sleeping on Rusty and Dale's floor and Dale is getting tired of the situation. Since Dale has also been trying to resist Sheila's (UPDATE: sorry, apparently it's Kristen O'Meara not "Oh, look, Sheila's wasting food with her 9½ Weeks recreation, again."
Calvin is left cringing, however, when it turns out that Dale's way of helping him to resist temptation involves faking a relationship ... with him. Calvin smiles tensely at Grant through the charade but I'm intensely amused by the sight of Dale calling Calvin "honey" and pretending to be anxious to get a good seat for a screening of Showgirls. Calvin quickly tires of the charade at the Kappa Tau "End of the World" party when he sees Grant chatting up another guy. When Grant points out that Dale is "cheating" on Calvin with Sheila, Calvin admits to the fake relationship, leading to a big kiss between the two and, presumably, romance next season. Calvin, OTOH, did not seem to enjoy hearing Dale call him "Honey" the way I did
First off, how cool was it to see Grant and Calvin kissing in the middle of a big Kappa Tau party without hesitation? Considering Grant's previous reluctance to be out to his Omega Chi brothers, I'm curious as to what was going on in Grant's head (perhaps the idea of Calvin seeming unavailable got him thinking about the things he's missing by being closeted?) but it's pretty cool that Greek is presenting a Kappa Tau party as a place where two guys kissing won't turn any heads. (Admittedly, it would have been cooler if a couple of ZBZ girls stopped and swooned at the sight, as a call back to the ways boys would react to Rebecca and Robin kissing.) While I would have liked to have delved into Calvin and Grant's relationship more, I really enjoyed getting another chance to watch Calvin and Dale's unlikely friendship. Greek has managed a challenging balancing act with Dale. He hasn't been a cartoonish Bible-thumper, but the show has also avoided making him "complex" by having it turn out that he's a conservative who turns out not to really have any conservative positions. We've seen Dale make a slow transition thanks to knowing an openly gay man and Dale is beginning to respect Calvin as a friend, even if it creates a cognitive dissonance with his religious views. Kissing in the middle of a big Kappa Tau party
On that note, I've got my fingers crossed that seemingly-throwaway line about Brian and Sanjay spending their vacation together at a gay destination will turn out to be more than just a gag. It's a cute joke, but in true Greek style, it would be amazing to see Dale realize that two of his purity pledge brothers are gay. What did you think? Did this season finale have you anticipating the next step for Grant and Calvin? Is Dale convincing as a character with two incongruous aspects? Also, which former Swingtown cast member will show up on the Cypress-Rhodes campus next? I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see Josh Hopkins (Janet's uptight husband Roger) as the stuffy administrator who gets in between Calvin and Grant ... or Shanna Collins (the Millers' independent-minded daughter) as the head of a rival sorority to ZBZ (now that Frannie is out of the picture). Finale Thoughts
It was a great finale. I really like the people playing brother and sister Rusty and Casey in the "straight" storylines. Casey is one I am truly loving actually. Man i am so gay sometimes...
Calvin's was a sideline to the big love triangle with Casey and Rusty's student issues but the Dale/Calvin friendship had me laughing outloud and really showed the comaraderie of how both a straight and gay boy can fear intimacy even when they crave it. Their "descent" into caving in to their desires was more about sharing their hearst with someone and not just lust... although Sheila certainly put on the full court press. It was a funny story and the sexual chemistry and tension between Calvin and Grant was really evident. It was great to see their disply of affection just went unnoticed...but I guarantee that it will be an issue come August I am sure.
...and did you notice they teased us with Grant. He came in to the dorm room and started removing his shirt, but by the end of the scene and Dale's attempt at being Calvin's bf, the shirt stayed on... again I am getting to involved with this show... lol
How weird that Miriam Shor from Swingtime was Sheila! I have watched all season and I never recoginzed her until you mentioned it here! I miss Swingtown... luckily I have the first season on dvd!
Greek in general is a good show for the teenage - twentysomething set but it is a show that really is great for people with teens too. I know I am just enjoying it and didn't really expect I would at 38!
one word...
I have only 1 word to say on this episode(other than these of course)
....manhole....
LMAO!
My tounge would catch your tounge...were the world mine :-)
Ummm..... No.
i dunno...i mean it's still
The way I see it...
...the show has done more to convince me of Calvin/Grant than Casey/Cappie. Those are some definite weaknesses to the story but the only romance that Greek has made convincing for me was Rusty/Jordan and Max's feelings for Casey (Calvin's relationships, both struck me as well written but not destined to last) every other relationship on the show has had the same weaknesses you cite for Calvin & Grant. I'm tempted to say that's more about the college setting than anything else.
College love
I think Calvin/Grant is the rawness of attraction but it also about the comfort of a familiar. Calvin was not unfamiliar with Grant. Off-screen we are supposed to believe he has always been there. We are only seeing Grant now because of the plot point. Yes it is weak since this is really a teen/college soap but that is the truth. What is also the truth is that Calvin really wants something to come of his next relationship but his caution was more his own internal homophobia and his own fear of being involved with someone in his comfort zone - namely the frat and his own dorm room! I think what Calvin realized here was that being resistant to his own natural feelings about Grant and Grant's obvious attraction to him really broke the dam and had these two kissing in the end. the assumption is that they will hop into bed... which I am sure is true when the show returns but that remains to be seen.
Sure, we could have had more of a dating flirt/period but for one that isn't realistic given our own experience with college and two the continuous waiting would have just generated complaints for NOT taking the step. Remember with Heath, Calvin started out with him in bed as a casual thing and when Heath got serious Calvin bolted only to have Heath go elsewhere. When he was with the TA who was older and more comfroatble with himself, Calvin wasn't ready either and sabotaged that because commitment again was an issue. Calvin has his consistent issues with himself and commitment. Maybe this is a sign that he might be moving toward tackling those issues. But again it is college.
This show is not a deep one Anthony but it does treat the issues the same and is aware that it has to be respectful and that is all we really can ask for now. For an 8pm hour show this show is truly daring if you think about it all around.
Pretty Good Episode
I'm glad Calvin and Grant got together at the end.
But why do I still have a crush on Cappy?
Huh...
Is that really Miriam Shor playing Sheila? The actress definitely looks like her, but I don't remember seeing her listed in the opening credits or anything...
As for it the relationship with Calvin and Grant being all sizzle and no steak...definitely get what you're saying, but I guess I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Lots of times, relationships do start out that way, and I'm glad that they are open about Calvin actually having a sex drive. And I do feel like they took time with the Calvin and Michael relationship and made it about more than sex, so hopefully they'll do it with this one too!

I think you're right
...back when Sheila first showed up I checked IMDB and it credited the role to Shor but now it credits the role to Kristen O'Meara now. I guess whoever submitted that info to IMDB was similarly confused and Michael Rady's is the only Swingtown alum on Greek. I've added a correction.
darn it...
Well, . . .
I kinda think the storyline crossed over into "not believable" early on. Namely, the fact that Calvin fought his attraction in the first place. I mean, HELLO! When Kevin from Dante's Cove tells you he's into guys, any self-respecting homo with so much as two functioning neurons to rub together should have immediately dragged him off to the nearest unoccupied room to get his "man-hump" on (Thank you, Ashleigh).
Sure, sure. The whole "two gay guys don't automatically have to be into each other" shtick is a good message to get out there, but come on. Last time I checked, being a martyr to principle isn't part of the college experience. Besides, principled characters aren't the draw for this show. A tall drink of water named Beaver is.
Ah, Josh Hopkins. Josh Hopkins is a welcome addition to any show at any time. I'm sure GREEK would find something fun for him to do, but I much rather see him on Pants Off Dance-Off, personally.
