IMHO "Greek" (2.20): Isn't it Bro-mantic?
Last night's Greek gave us the first look at Grant (Gregory Michael) as frat brother and new love interest to Calvin (Paul James). We've eagerly anticipating Grant's debut ever since we heard that Calvin would be getting a new love interest. So far, this looks like a promising start for the relationship, definitely earning Greek an up-arrow. After another round of Calvin playing "I'm Griffin's roommate, get me outta here" with Evan, Grant hops into the seat next to Calvin in the Omega Chi living room. After attempting a subtle soft-outing ("You're not the only gay at Omega Chi. No, it's not him ... or him ... it's me, I'm talking about me, here.") Grant comes out to Calvin, making Grant the second gay Omega Chi brother ... and making Calvin the only other Omega Chi brother to know.
Calvin admits to Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) that he has mixed feelings about this. He's not sure how his Omega Chi brothers will feel about having two gay brothers (one, after all, is an acceptable token while two is the beginning of a takeover). Ashleigh, meanwhile, immediately squeals about how Grant and Calvin would make for a great couple, which Calvin dismisses as a bad idea. As we knew was coming, Calvin finally gets a new roommate ... who turns out to be Grant. Sexual tension arises the first time Grant is in need of a shower and strips in front of Calvin, prompting Calvin to run back across campus to Rusty's spare bed ... in his boxer shorts and socks.
There are a few things I like about this potential new relationship. First, Calvin's last relationship was with a man who had been out for a while: Michael had plenty of gay friends, was well-versed in gay culture and had a long enough relationship history that he was looking to settle down with someone whose idea of a romantic night includes cuddling on the couch and re-watching Beautiful Thing on DVD. Grant, on the other hand, is still closeted and is just starting to work through why he would want to be out to his frat brothers. I like how this potential relationship comes with different challenges than Michael did and I'm looking forward to see where this goes. Of course, there are many potential problems with Calvin starting a relationship with Grant, issues not limited to the Omega Chis' potential worry about becoming "too gay". Calvin's smart enough to see that it's a bad idea to get involved with your roommate and someone you'll continue to have close ties if things end badly. It's clear that Calvin will eventually decide to give in to his impulse and that will nicely match the complex way Greek has handled its straight relationships this season.
Meanwhile, I really enjoyed the scenes between Calvin and Ashleigh, which included Calvin receiving advice (for a change) and Calvin giving Ashleigh grief for accidentally outing him earlier. Paul James and Amber Stevens have a great BFF-chemistry and they're always fun to watch together. What did you think? Are you looking forward to seeing more of Grant? Will he make an interesting follow-up relationship to Michael? Submitted by on Tue, 2009-06-02 11:48. |

I like...
...the way they made it clear that just because they're both gay doesn't mean they should instantly be together, and in fact the opposite is happening and Calvin is avoiding Grant because of the complications it would cause. Love the scenes between Calvin and Ashleigh with him trying to deny that he is attracted to grant. Also glad that like you say, it ties in with the other relationships having similar patterns of avoiding the issue. Can't wait to see how it plays out (and more of gregory michael in just a towel...or hopefully less ;-).
My tounge would catch your tounge...were the world mine :-)
I liked it, But.....
I agree...
...about the whole britney discussion thing, that didn't seem to fit the whole not stereotypically gay thing but then, maybe they were trying to make a joke of it really?? I wish they did 'get their groove on' too lol =D

I think he was being sarcastic
I liekd it but need to see how it progresses...
The chemistry is definitely there and the tension certainly was raised. I didn't like how Grant was just this character who was there all a long though and just appeared. However, since this is an 8pm hour show I am looking forwward to something that is a little more mature and romantic than "hop-into-bed-tastic". Now, Calvin running across campus in this boxers was silly though. I would hope they take this in a direction where they are friends and not romantic interests. How many gay friends beyond Will & Grace have there really been? It could really show that gay men can be friends and not lovers first. And although clearly facitious, they couldn't say Kylie instead of Britney? C'mon that is true realism. ;-)
This show is certainly becoming a guilty pleasure though. I am enjoying the brother/sister Casey and Rusty storylines, since they are the better actors on the show. The romantic use of the Sistine Chapel was really cute. And I will applaud the apprarant comfort of the rest of the characters with Calvin.
Is anybody though getting a serious MTV Undressed vibe from this show though?
Could get very interesting
