IMHO: Greek (3.01) The new odd couple of Cyprus-Rhodes
ABC Family's Greek returned for its third season last night and gave me a solid reminder to why gay fratboy Calvin is one of my favorite gay characters on TV. Amid the relationship drama for the likes of Casey, Cappie and Ashleigh, we saw Calvin try to figure out where his most recent hook-up will lead with the unlikely help from conservative evangelical Dale. For the details of why the episode gets an up arrow, however, you'll have to wade into the SPOILERS below.
After the Kappa Tau "End of the World" party, everyone is waking up in recovery from one kind of overindulgence or another. For Calvin that means waking up to the sound of John de Lancie (aka Star Trek's Q) - or a good soundalike - reading the Bible on Rusty and Dale's couch. For a moment Calvin takes this as a sign that he managed not to break the purity pledge he made with Dale. That ends, however, when Grant comes walking into the living room to find his pants. Since Calvin can't remember anything beyond kissing Grant, Grant takes the opportunity to prank Calvin, telling him how they discussed potential wedding arrangements. It's a really cute moment for the two but I'm left wondering how a closeted guy like Grant could be so at ease in discussing their potential relationship. Grant's behavior is plausible, but I need something to pull it all together.
Meanwhile we also learn that, while Calvin kept up his purity pledge, Dale broke his vow and had sex with Sheila in a moment of post-apocalyptic panic. Dale confesses his moment of weakness to Calvin, who feels free to discuss Grant with Dale. I'm really loving their unlikely friendship, which is starting to remind me of Swingtown's Janet and Trina - on paper you'd expect these two characters to hate each other, but due to a friend in common they've learned to accept each other's differences without changing who they are.
So. While I'm loving Calvin and Dale's friendship, I'm starting to feel a bit wary about Calvin and Grant's romance. Paul James and Gregory Michael are definitely showing chemistry but I'm looking for a chance to get to know Grant better. I'd like to think that being closeted is more than just a way to explain why we didn't know there were any more gays in Omega Chi. Greek has managed some compelling character-based romances (it's even managed to make me find Casey and Cappie compelling), so I'm eager to learn more about Grant the way we did with Max, Jordan and Michael. Still, for the moment watching Calvin and Grant together is enough fun to make me overlook those worries. What did you think? Is Calvin and Dale's friendship convincing for you? How about Grant? Are you getting drawn into their potential relationship? Submitted by on Tue, 2009-09-01 16:23. |

Greek Season Premiere: NOT ENOUGH CALVIN
I really needed more Calvin and Grant and a LOT LESS Cassie.
Calvin and Dale's friendship totally works for me. Rusty is way too self-obsorbed (like his sister) to really be THERE for Calvin but Dale steps up to the plate and despite his own issues seems to really care for Calvin and vice versa.
I know Cassie and Rusty are the leads but we get more Dale and Jordan than we do Calvin and Grant and I just think it's a waste.
Evan is boring, boring, boring and I liked him better when he was just evil and scheming (and good friends with Calvin) because at least he did something back then
Now he barely speaks to Calvin (or he'd realize the obvious fact that Calvin and Grant are hiding something) and he seems to serve no purpose accept to whine about money, no money, too much money, etc.
I love Cappie (gosh he's gorgeous). I can watch him in any scene with anyone. Cappie makes everything better (as do Beaver and Wade) If Cappie does get back with Cassie, I want it to be because Cassie works to get him back because just breaking up with Max and expecting Cappie to come running is BS.
Rebecca dogging Ashley makes no sense and I find that whole storyline offensive given how much Rebecca has gone through and how incredibly wonderful Ashley has been to her. Why can't Ashley ever be the FIRST to know and why are we supposed to believe that Rebecca is so desperate or pitiful that she can only ever go after the men who are dating her sorority sisters?
They never let Fisher speak so it's hard to "feel" anything about him.
I did like the episode but I just need more Calvin development.
After two whole seasons I still feel like I barely know him and beyond sexual attraction (which is palpable between him and Grant) what else do they like about each other? Will they hold hands? Hug? Go on dates? Have torturous non-sexual one-bed sleepovers?
Do they talk late into the night about Grant's issues with coming out, does he want to? plan to? Would Evan be supportive of Grant?
They have the makings of a scorching hot pair with some really passion and romance if only they were used properly. They are so sexy and sweet and cute together if only the writes can GET IT TOGETHER. Paul James and Gregory Michael are being way underused but I guess time will tell.
Also, I really miss Max. Word.

J WRIGHT for MLK Jr biopic
As much as I enjoy Greek,
As much as I enjoy Greek, it's annoying yet so predictable that the gay couple is the only one to actively decide to postpone a sexual relationship (Rusty and whosits aren't there yet, but they certainly didn't decide NOT to proceed).
It just is disheartening that even a show as gay positive as Greek would set apart the gay relationship for prim chasteness, as opposed to all the staighties hooking up at the drop of a hat. And of course we did have Calvin in sexual relationships before.... off-screen, naturally!
Maybe I am wrong. I hope so and this Calvin/Grant pairing will at some point rejoin the real world of horny college students.
I loved that show.
I miss Swingtown. That was good TV.
Greek never takes its stories where I would have them go. Not that that's necessarly a bad thing, but I've just given up trying to prognosticate about it. I'm always way off the mark. All I know is Gregory Michael is ten kinds of hump-worthy, so as long as he's around and shirtless I'm cool with it.
I always wanted Beaver and Heath to get together. I could watch that all day long. Maybe I should pitch that as a spin-off.
I agree
Hold it now!
Calvin and Heath humped in the first season of Greek! Then they got together and split up. So this is not new! Furthermore Heath has been an integral gay member of Rusty's frat, even facing off with Beaver. Now there is a pairing I would like to see.
We are lucky that ABCFamily is so gay-friendly but they are not going to give us a really explicit gay story. So you want them humping the next show? That'll bring in the targeted audience.
My two cents
I like that Calvin and Grant are waiting. The stereotype is always the horny gay guys get it on. I think it is great that they are taking their time. I think we play Catch-22 on these shows. Sure a kiss or kisses and hugs and cuddling are nice things to show on a show, but not every relationship has to show them in bed or talking about the next day after the couple about sex about what it all means. Sure realistically they would have done it already like Heath and Calvin, but I think in the long haul its better we get to know Grant. They are roommates after all and only have dated like 1 day really in terms of where the show is. Like OLTL and K-Nish, the writers are showing America that gay couples are not just about sodomy and lust. They are showing us as people with thoughts and worries about love and love everlasting as well as school and work. The odd couple of Dale and Calvin is hysterical too.
Love the Swingtown btw! Trina was my favorite character. She was so complex. We need to talk up Lana Parrilla and get her work! My partner and I have the DVD and it is great to just watch parts or whole episodes of that show like you would a good book.

Did you even watch?
"For Calvin that means waking up to the sound of John de Lancie (aka Star Trek's Q) - or a good soundalike"
Uh, John de Lancie was listed in the opening credits.
