IMHO "Greek" (2.17): Katy Perry or Marky Mark?

I may have been grumbling about Greek in the Queerview of late, but this week's episode managed to charm me for being so very gay. It included the follow-up to Rebecca's sexual confusion after kissing Robin, giving Calvin a little more to do, and a glimpse of Ladies' Night at local gay bar Gentlemen's Choice. It also left me wondering a bit about Max.

While I've been frustrated with insufficient amounts of Calvin in recent episodes, this week's installment provided a good appetizer for the season finale where he meets up with his new love interest, earning it an up arrow. If you venture any further, however, be wary of the SPOILERS below.

Overall, the episode is all about secrets and closets. Not only does Rebecca try to figure out what to think of her kiss with Robin, Fisher is pushing Ashleigh to make their relationship public (including a scene where Rebecca catches them kissing in the food closet ... er, pantry).

Trying to figure out her feelings, Rebecca turns to Calvin who explains when he first knew he was gay, "I was eight years old and saw Marky Mark on TV in his boxers, I always fantasized about being one of the Funky Bunch."

I get the feeling I'm not the only one who empathizes with the sentiment.

To help Rebecca figure things out, he takes her someplace where she can be around the gays -- ladies night at the local gay bar. That also turns out to be the place for straights take their secret dates, as Gentlemen's Choice is Ashleigh's idea of taking Fisher out. I guess dimly-lit unfashionable Chinese restaurants are out?

Naturally, Ashleigh and Rebecca run into each other and when Ashleigh admits she kissed Robin at one point, Rebecca realizes the difference between the kind of same-sex kisses that inspire "pretty crappy pop songs" and the kind that inspires a major announcement at the breakfast table. (Hopefully, Gossip Girl will remember that Dan Humphrey is due to go through a similar crisis in his college years.)

Meanwhile, was I the only one whose geek gaydar was set off when Casey described her superpower as "reading women and their wardrobes and knowing everything about them which tells me how to get what I want", and then Max compared her to gay-fave X-woman Emma Frost?

I didn't realize straight X-Men fans gave much thought to Emma Frost's fashion intuition, but maybe that's a sign that Max is a good catch. (Too bad I get the feeling he won't be returning from Oxford.)

Rebecca inspires Ashleigh's "slow but sudden realization" face

After their little chat, I'm at least looking forward to seeing Calvin dole out romantic advice to Rebecca as she pursues a relationship with Robin. I've been frustrated lately because all he has to do is listen to other students' problems but at least this time he'll be discussing gay issues. What did you think?
