Isaiah Washington wishes he used a different word

I guess Larry King Live isn't really live since we already have a preview and a story recapping Isaiah Washington's appearance tonight. We'll see him he say that he tried to resign twice before he was fired (so was he "Mad as hell" over a big "You can't quit, you're fired!" type of fight, then?) Washington adds that he is "not homophobic, no way, shape and form," and does not use the f-word he used in reference to TR Knight commonly.

Washington discusses the slur, as expected:

"The dubious honor that I hold is not that I lack of awareness of the power of the word but I made a huge error in judgment in using the word at a time when all my friends, my companions who happen to be gay -- they're just sick and tired of hearing the word. And I did it before the world... in terms of what I was feeling on that day, I would rather wish I would say 'I wish would wouldn't treat me like an N-word'"

Kinda like Kathy Griffin, Washington mentions that he's been reading what's said about him on blogs. Considering the strong emotions he's invoked both among defenders and detractors, I hope he's got plenty of grains of salt next to his computer.

    Now It All Makes Sense!

Isaiah Washington says "The dubious honor that I hold is not that I lack of awareness of the power of the word but I made a huge error in judgment in using the word at a time when all my friends, my companions who happen to be gay -- they're just sick and tired of hearing the word."

Ah, so if Washington had only used the f-word at a time when everyone wasn't "sick and tired of hearing" it, everything would be okay!  Now it all makes sense!  It's like that time-- I know you all remember it-- a few years ago when we were all sitting around sipping Margaritas and thinking "you know what's a word we just don't hear enough of these days?  The f-word!  You know, the one that's a slur against gays. I wish some actor on a  tv soap opera would start yelling it at his co-workers or something."  And everyone in the gay community looked reflective for a moment, put a finger up beside their face in a thoughtful manner, and said "yes, yes.  Just what HAS happened to the f-word we all used to know and love?"  I remember that conversation as though it were yesterday.

But now, I mean, wow, we're really tired of the f-word, kind of like some of those Geico caveman commercials that were funny the first time you saw them, but now that  they've shown the same ones about eight million times, they're just not funny anymore.  That's just how gay people feel about the f-word!  It used to be all new and bright and shiny, but now, gosh darn it, we're all just plain tired of it.

How sad that Isaiah Washington picked exactly the moment for his outburst where we'd all just become "sick and tired" of the word "f*ggot."  It turns out that Washington's real problem wasn't homophobia or erratic behavior at all-- it turns out he simply wasn't trendy enough!

    Isaiah Speaks

I've had mixed emotions about him and this situation but this interview changed that.  He still believes gay men are weak.  He has built up T.R. Knight into being some evil genius trying to destory his career which is absurd.  T.R. publicly lived 34 years in the closet he would have been happy to stay in it.  He didn't want his homosexuality to become public. As far as his treatment is concerned he has gotten more than a fair shake.  The O'Reilly Factor, Scarborough Country and the like have covered every move Rosie O'Donnell makes, Mel Gibson's anti-semitic rant, Michael Richards' tirade, Imus' racist comment and so forth but have not covered this story.  Entertainment shows have had marginal coverage.

    His best performance

He gave his best performance ever on the Larry King show.  If he were always this good, he'd be another Laurence Olivier.  But he's not that good, and he'll be remembered, if at all, for his bigotry.
