News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Queer-inclusive days are here again with the new "Justice League" lineup

In this week's Gay Geek column, I lamented that when gay characters appear in the big name, top-of-the-sales-chart titles, they usually end up as backburner characters. When gay characters do get prominently featured in a title, it's usually in a title that debuts on the cancellation bubble.

However, here's some hopeful news: it's time for DC's Justice League franchise to get its once-a-decade revamp and renumbering. This time, the initial team includes lesbian heroine Batwoman as well as the bisexual alien Starman (Mikaal Tomas). This Justice League series is being written by James Dale Robinson, who dragged Mikaal out of the obscurity of First Issue Special #12 and who was nominated for a GLAAD media award in 1999 (though Robinson lost to Peter David work on Supergirl) for the way he handled Mikaal.

If memory (and Wikipedia) serves me correctly, it's been a while since we've seen Mikaal, who hasn't had a major appearance since the critically praised Starman series wrapped up in 2001, so it should be interesting to see what he's been up to since Jack Knight (the lead character in Starman and another hero to take up that legacy) retired. Robinson teases that Mikaal has been reconnecting with the "war-like aspects of his race," making him a man who is savage in battle and elegant in civilized society.

This isn't the first time a Justice League title has been inclusive of LGBTQ characters. During a period most superhero fans would rather forget, the mid-90s League included the bisexual Ice Maiden as well as Obsidian, who had begun openly questioning his sexuality during his time in the League (he eventually come to terms with his sexual orientation in Manhunter a few years ago). However, this is the first time the League has included LGBT characters in its lineup as it headed towards a high-profile relaunch under a big name creator, a hopeful step forward for gay characters.

(And if you can't wait to find out more about Mikaal, you can check out his Gay League profile page or check out the collected Starman books.)

    Justice League revamp?

Okay, don't get me wrong, I love the idea of Batwoman and Mikaal joinging up for the Justice League, but has this series even been around 2 years yet?  And there's already talk of a revamp and renumbering?  Really?  Wow.  Maybe from now on they're just each gonna be a 12 issue series, so they can get that new #1 sold each year...

ASIDE from that ranting, Mikall and Batwoman are each great, so really seeing them get some recognition and spotlight time is terrific.  They have Starman in JSA, so I wonder if Mikaal will be another Starman, or if he'll get a different name...?

    Another Revamp?

Ugh, I get so tired of comics doing that. JLA has been revamped so many times in many differnet ways. Every year it's a new direction and a new vision that rewrites so much of the previous history, but in the end it's the same old tired material.

    Not a relaunch

Actually, this isn't a relaunch or a reboot. This is a totally separate title than the main Justice League of America, which is still ongoing. They aren't related by anything but the name.

    Good to know!

Well, that's good to know... so a new seperate Justice League title, eh?  Well, hopefully it'll be good... I wonder what the theme/ title of it might be.

Hopefully it'll be good, and if it is, last long...!

    The currently ongoing

The currently ongoing series will remain Justice League of America, while the new title will just be called "Justice League." I believe the difference in the new team will be that they are more proactive rather than reactive with regards to their heroics.

I thought I commented on this earlier, but Tazmanian Devil, also gay, was a member of Justice League International at one point, although unfortunately he's barely been seen since.

    Tasmanian Devil

I actually like Taz a lot too, and wish we'd see him back around somewhere... maybe we'll get to see him again somewhere, someday...

And it's very good to know what this series' name will be...although, as another poster said, you'd think it'd be Justice League something... How about Justice League West Coast?  hehe    8)

    Thank you!

I was wondering why they would relaunch a title that they just relaunched not too long ago.  Although, the title doesn't make much sense.  Seems like it should be Justice League something, not just Justice League

.... for letting us know what's up. That clears things up considerably.
