Joss Whedon returns to Fox, with Faith

Fox's new entertainment president made his first major programming move with the announcement that Joss Whedon has a new series in the works with the network. Even better, this isn't news of a pilot being developed to possibly make it to our TVs: Fox has already committed to seven episodes.

The new project, titled Dollhouse, reunites Whedon with Eliza Dushku, who's best remembered as renegade vampire slayer Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dushku will play Echo, an agent who can be programed to have a personality -- including any necessary physical or intellectual abilities -- tailored to any task assigned to her. In between assignments, Echo and her fellow agents have their memories erased to leave a clean slate for their next one. However, Echo begins to develop some self-awareness, disrupting the status quo for the illegal facility known as The Dollhouse.

Whedon also discussed the show with TV Week. He expressed optimism for Dollhouse's chances at Fox, despite the disappointment fans felt over his last Fox series, Firefly, saying that, "It’s a brand new day over there. It’s a completely new bunch of people and they seem really intelligent and supportive."

Whedon also noted that the series' debut will depend on when the impending writers' strike ends:

I can write for spring. There’s a hiccup in that process because of the [potential] writers strike. I will be good to go the moment we are in agreement with the studios. But I won’t pick up a pencil while we’re not.

So far, there's no gay characters in the show but Whedon is responsible for giving us the first gay lead character on an American sci-fi TV series and is one of the few sci-fi writers out there who regularly seeks to include gay characters and stories. Considering that there's a definite shortage of gay representation in sci-fi, a new series by Whedon is a very welcome development.

    Eliza was never a favourite

Eliza was never a favourite of mine on Buffy & Angel, and I've lost a lot of respect for Joss after learning some things about how he handled certain situations on Buffy & Angel, but I hope this show will be good. I'll be tuning in. :)

What do you mean Matty about

What do you mean Matty about certain situations handled? I admit to being a Whedon fan but I can't recall any mistake on his part that would make you lost respect for him. Even the Tara killing was justified in my opinion.

    Nothing on the show itself,

Nothing on the show itself, that's all (mostly) been great, but behind the scenes stuff. I think he just says stuff to the press that he thinks people want to hear, even if it's not necessarily true. Like he's badmouthed Amber Benson, Charisma Carpenter and Sarah Michelle Gellar for various reasons, he's said things after the shows have been over that he had "planned" to do but the actors wouldn't do, but when the actors themselves were asked about them in the press they hadn't even been approached about these plans, etc. The thing that bugs me the most is the way he treated Charisma Carpenter. He totally fired her the day before filming season five of Angel was supposed to start. She definitely wanted to come back even though she had a baby during the break, but he told all the press that it was her decision not to come back. She was really disappointed that she wouldn't be finishing the series. I mean, a lot of this is he-said-she-said, but I believe Charisma, Amber, Sarah and Seth more than I believe him when they're all saying the same thing in several different interviews. I just think he's full of himself sometimes and doesn't handle certain situations behind the scenes very well.

This is a new side of the

This is a new side of the story I had never heard or noticed. But like you said, in these sort of things it's a lot of he said/she said... I guess we'll never really know.
