Kathy Griffin knows what you said about her
Tuesday, Kathy Griffin stopped by The Tyra Banks Show to talk about the new season of My Life on the D-List, and of course one topic of conversation was Kathy's love of "the gays". One of the things we'll see this season is an performance she gives for an audience in prison: "I like to challenge myself as a standup," she explained. Kathy had hoped to perform for gay inmates at the Los Angeles County Jail, but, as you may have heard, was rejected by the Sheriff's department out of concerns that her material would be "inappropriate".
Instead of spending time with gay prisoners in L.A. County, Kathy performed at a maximum security prison in Arizona. Talking about the prisoners she met, it sounds like this episode of The D-List will be similar to her encounters in Iraq last year, when she treated her audience as people worth spending some time with and getting to know a little, not as an audience there only to feed her applause and reality TV drama. It's too bad she didn't get the okay from the LA Sheriff's Department, the D-List would probably be better exposure for the prison than a MSNBC Lockup documentary. Another D-List story is Kathy's current romantic cynicism after her divorce. "I decided that I married for love like a fool and now I only want to date men I can be in magazines with. Only photo ops." When Tyra responded that some celebrities use follow that rule Kathy mused, "I think for the really big stars it's almost like the old fashioned Hollywood arranged marriages and if they get along fine,if he's banging guys on the side, who cares." She also talked about how she doesn't turn a deaf ear to people who talk about her online: Kathy: I Google myself all the time Tyra: What does that make you feel like? Kathy: Famous... through the tears. Tyra: Have you really cried about something? Kathy: All the time. Tyra: Are you serious? Kathy: Oh, yeah! 'She's an old, ugly hag!' (pantomimes typing) I'm like 'Ha, ha! That's funny!' (stops typing, feigns crying) 'No, that's not!' I read all that stuff, but sometimes it really just makes me laugh. So. Now you know who was behind all those hits on your blog that came searching for "Kathy Griffin fabulous" "Kathy Griffin funny" and "Kathy Griffin old hag." Hi Kathy! Part of the fun of watching Tyra is some of her strange reactions. When Griffin explained how some gay inmates would improvise cosmetics (using pencil lead for liner and turning red vitamins into lip stain) Tyra had a look of perplexed surprise, as if the idea of prisoner not having access to makeup had only just occurred to her.
A Lot to Talk About
Tyra has been extremely generous in devoting shows to LGBT issues and having LGBT people on. I agree that Tyra is animated when she hears others talk.
I have commented on posts about Kathy just so she can read them. I knew she read the stuff people said about her on the internet. It's kinda surreal thinking a celebrity is on the other end reading what you say about them. I hope she does.
In the first episode after Kathy played at Carnegie Hall she exited and instead of being mobbed by fans her assistant Jessica is. I can relate to that. I've been ignored at my own birthday. Kathy was hysterical when she was having dinner with Joan Rivers and when her new male assistant was talking about his crush on Kelly Pickler.
I don't think Kathy will be getting The View gig. First, Elisabeth doesn't like anyone that are friends with Rosie. I watched a little bit last Tuesday and Elisabeth wouldn't even look at Kathy. Secondly, Barbara is fine with the women being put in their place meaning they only talk about trivial issues. Kathy is like Rosie in that she doesn't mind speaking about political issues. Barbara won't risk media controversy again. She called Kathy's remarks about Condi Rice being a Republican bigoted last week. She wouldn't dare say that to Elisabeth or any other conservative since they control the media. I understand what Kathy meant but Barbara had to slap her down so she wouldn't be associated with the comment or possible controversy like she had been with Rosie. Blacks are not a prioty in the Republican party was Kathy's point.
I think her not getting The View gig will be for the better though. It's a sinking ship. You don't board a sinking ship.
In an interview with Ryan Seacreast, Barbara Walters said they couldn't talk about heterosexual sex among other things around Rosie. What is she talking about? I watched the show everyday Rosie was on and they talked about it almost everyday.

Next week or the week after Kathy will be at the GAYVN awards. Erik Rhodes I think will be dancing on her or something. Whatever he does it will be hot. He's 6'4", muscular, good-looking, and gay.
