Kyle XY's gay-friendly episode draws the expected complaints

Thanks to our readers, we learned that this week's Kyle XY included a gay-themed storyline, with a controversy breaking out at Kyle's school over gay students at a dance. The series focuses on a mysterious teen with no memory (or belly button, for that matter) who therefore needs to re-learn how society functions. It's been noted for its very frank discussions on sexuality and drugs, earning Kyle XY a TV-14 rating.

Unsurprisingly, the gay-friendly episode has riled up a few viewers, as can be seen at the Kyle XY message boards:

I was under the impression that ABC Family was designed for family viewing ... wholesome family viewing but apparently not! Just when I thought I had found a safe and semi-clean program to watch in KYLEXY you turn it into all the illicit behavior that most parents are trying to teach their children to stay away from!!

It is just me, or does writing it as "KYLEXY" sound like something that'd better fit on late-night Cinemax?

Unfortunately, the discussion immediately turns into the kind of shouting match that has me avoiding message boards at TV shows' official websites. Still, I am curious about what could have offended "missbettiefay63" considering that Kyle XY has to this point followed the lead character's sexual maturing with the honesty of a Judy Blume novel. And honestly -- if this person is getting all wound up over what sounds like a fairly innocuous gay-friendly episode, we hope for her sake she doesn't catch any of ABC Family's newest sex-and-booze-filled morality gauntlet, Greek. Poor bird might have a coronary.

The episode in question, "Free To Be You and Me" airs again tomorrow night at Midnight. I've been hearing good things about Kyle XY, so this gives me a good excuse to finally check it out.

That message board is a mess and not worth our time

Did you read that thread? Who would want to even get in the middle of that? It's not possible to have an actual discussion there that doesn't spin into total chaos. Any valid points would be lost.

    Challenge Them

Anti-gay people have to be challenged, they have gone unchallenged for far too long.

Yes, they do need to be confronted

But that message board is not the place to do it. Any meaningful discussion is lost amongst all the extreme posturing and POVs. People hiding behind a computer screen.

Amidst the flame war, there WERE some voices of reason...

...for example, this post from StAtEpRoXy:

    Who Are You People?

My daughter loaded this show on my iPod as a gift and I ended up blowing through season 1 & all the aired shows in season 2. I think its quite fun. Where on earth did these "offended" parties attend high school? I grew up in Orange County, and distinctly remember my youth being a midfield of s-x, illicit narcotics, political change, and political music (the beginnings of punk 1979). I was even in MGM (what is now called GATE) from grades 1-7, and many of those kids were dropping acid, smoking pot and having s-x (yes, in 7th grade)! Of course being exposed to all that, you are also exposed to the consequences of such actions (police, mental health issues, and family planning visits). Admittedly, some of my friends gave in to such temptations and suffered for it, but all of us are happily married (not a single divorce among us) and are quite successful professionals. I'm not saying this exposure is a good thing, it simply was and is, reality. The sad thing is that children today are exposed to so much more and so much younger. Consequently, If you found this show shocking, and believe that your high school children should be sheltered from its content, you are truly an ill informed parent! Compared to the reality of their school day, this is a religious zealots version of high school!

Of course, the offended parties tended to be blatant homophobes and bigots who vehemently denied being that way. Perhaps because they saw themselves being portrayed in the episode and didn't like what they were seeing. One of the most deluded statements I read went something like: "I'm not a bigot/homophobe; I have gay friends. I tell them that their lifestyle choice is harmful and that I don't agree with it. But they're still my friends because I tolerate them." Uh-huh...right.

    SOUNDS FAMILIAR

That quote seems very familiar. Didn't someone post a similar comment, almost word for word, recently about another TV show that had a gay-themed episode? I can't remember which one, but I'm pretty sure that quote was mentioned on AfterElton as well. I get the impression someone from one of those anti-gay organizations is automatically posting this complaint whenever a "family-friendly" show has a gay-friendly episode.

I'm a pretty big fan of the show and thought the episode was great.  It's a nonissue for me.

    New fan..

I just got into Kyle KY after, er, "coming across" the episodes on the internet. Totally innocent here. They were just sitting on the side of the information highway, discarded and unloved, so I snatched them up. Nothing illegal about that, right? Right?

Anyway, I'm only on the 5th or so episode of the first season (and loving it, BTW - Matt Dallas is adorable like a baby turtle and the show is executed really well) but anyway, this is making me want to skip a few episodes...but I'll hold off.

As for the woman's comments - *yawns*. Welcome to reality. Similar comments were all over the interweb when OLTL had that poll up about taking the gay characters to the next level. There will always be people complaining about family-friendly television with an anti-gay aftertaste, but something tells me that Kyle XY isn't going to lose enough (if any) viewers over this for ABC to even bat an eyelash.
