The latest "Torchwood" radio play delivers for "Janto" fans

Not only do U.K. viewers get to watch Torchwood: Children of the Earth this week, but over the weekend they got the latest Torchwood radio play to follow, "The Dead Line" (which, unfortunately, is geoblocked for those of us in the US). The story follows a mysterious phone call which puts people into a coma but it also offers a heart breakingly tender moment for the Janto fans.

But don't venture any further if you're looking to avoid any SPOILERS.

Arrogant and over confident due to his immortality, Captain Jack answers one of these calls to see what they're like and winds up in a coma like the call's other victims.

As Ianto and Gwen race to stop the coma-inducing phone calls, Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) delivers a heart wrenching monologue to the comatose Jack. If you can't listen to the episode, you can read a transcript of the speech.

Not only does Ianto confess how deeply his affection for Captain Jack goes, but he also expresses his worry about not meaning as much to Jack as Jack does to him:

This must be the longest that I’ve ever looked at you and not seen you smile. I’ve watched you in your sleep; did you know that? So many times. Just woken up beside you in the middle of the night and watched you. Watched your eyes moving behind your eyelids as you dreamed. And tried to imagine what a man like you could possibly dream about. The things you’ve seen; the lives you’ve lived; the people you’ve loved. I wondered if you were dreaming about me, I hoped you were dreaming about me.
But lets be honest, Jack. I’m… nothing more than a blip in time for you, Jack. Everyday, I grow a little older. But you’re immortal. You’ve already lived a thousand lifetimes. How could you watch me grow old and die? How can I watch you live and never age a day?
I suppose we both know that will never be a problem. Not in this job. No one in Torchwood ever lives to draw their pension do they? Even by some miracle I survive to see my hair turned grey, or God forbid fall out, I don’t kid myself that you’d still be around to see it. One day, you’ll go again, just like you did before.

At the episode's end, when the source of the calls is defeated and Jack comes out of the coma, they both awkwardly overlook Ianto's confession.

Jack claims he doesn't remember anything from the coma and Ianto passes what he said as just "a little" bit of talking. At that point, John Barrowman gets his chance to make the Janto fans squee in delight when Jack responds, "You will never be just a blip in time, Ianto Jones. Not for me."

Okay, I admit it, the plot holes and bad choices often pull me out of Torchwood (and "Dead Line" has a big one, unless I missed the part where they explain how this is a very special EMP that doesn't affect life support machines or hard drives with patient histories) but the Janto romance always manages to pull me back in.

"You will never be just a blip in time, Ianto Jones" is just the thing to get me excited for Children of Earth's debut on July 20, which promises plenty of focus on Janto.

Now if only other sci-fi shows would realize how a steamy gay romance can get viewers to overlook plot holes.

    is it possible ...

...to have your eyes get all misty and your nipples to get all hard at the same time?

    ...just from reading a transcript??

    I love this show.

    just by reading?

You really have to listen to it! Gareth David-Lloyd's delivery makes that speech so touching and beautiful, when his voice breaks... Oh, you really need to hear it!

    mood music

After Jack says that line there is a long piece of music (30 sec) before the end of the play. The music was happy and kind of peaceful, it was like the producers wanted the listeners to imagine what Jack and Ianto were doing... by themselves...in Jack's hospital room, on his bed. My mind went to an extremely happy place.

    Torchwood Ianto update

In tonight first episode Ianto talks to his sister who thinks he is seeing a man and he tells her that basically he is but he's not gay its just jack that he wants to be with and no other men.

It was quite a sweet scene and I hope people do not rip it to shreds just because of that statement.

    I'm in the USA....

And i got to hear it just fine using thier "Listen Again" link on the page. I said this on another thread, but i'll say it here:Gareth David-Lloyd is the fucking man!

His monolouge was the best i've heard since Ted's "God is Love"speech on "Queer As Folk"'s first season!

    I completely agree!

Ianto's monologue was just what we Janto fans have been waiting for.  More than a few people commented on the BBCA Torchwood board about how it brought them to tears.  Gareth David Lloyd has really done a great job with the evolution of the Ianto character.

And,  I also agree with you about Ted's God is Love speech to Emmett on QAF.  The first time I heard it, I thought it was brilliant and replayed the DVD a few times to hear it again.  Years later, it still impresses.

first off.. thank you rich for reminding me about the "god is love" speech by ted... i really really love that monologue... i even got teary eyed when i started reminiscing that scene....

and secondly - "you will never be just a blip in time..." - yep...totally squeel inducing... i never knew my voice could reach that high.

    plot holes

Glad I'm not the only one who notices the plot holes. Torchwood plots are kind of silly, sometimes, but this is not the show I come to for realism and social commentary. It's a fun show that takes me to fantasy land for a while, and the characters keep me interested. I can enjoy any type of show if the characters and the relationships bewteen them are interesting.

    Here's a way to record

Download the free version of "Jet Audio Basic", you can find it at CNET.com. It will record anything that's playing through your sound card. Start the BBC player...there several minutes of lead in stuff you won't want, then start Jet Audio recording. File goes to your My Music folder, then you can dub it to CD using any program that creates CDs. As of 7/6/09 there's only 4 days left to listen to The Dead Line.

    'Janto'

Oh. It took me a minute. I'd forgotten it's that merging of two names, no matter how not clever it is, no matter how it doesn't work on any level, is what the cool kids are doing these days. 'Janto' looks like a typo.

    Anyway:

The radio dramas are all very good. I'm sure only one of them appeals to AfterElton for reasons stated above.

The first episode of 'Children of Earth' will probably piss a lot of you off, and be labled 'homophobic' because of one line of dialogue. I hope most of you 'Torchwood' fans can get past it because the episode is brilliant. (Then again, just like LOGO, BBC America may just censor the line.)

And as for plot holes? Challenge me. I can find a plot hole in anything... if I choose to. It's sci-fi, for shit's sake. Just go with it. There's bigger plot holes in the new 'Star Trek' (which I did very much enjoy).

And you people who post: I'm not a fan of the show so I'm gonna bitch about everything... blah blah blah... why are you even posting? Go away. Go post loving things about things you do like. Or is that your thing? I think, for many, it is.

    why gwen

I'm still in shock they killed off two great character's and kept the slug gwen, what are they thinking.

    Gwen

The writers seem to really, really like Gwen. To annoying extents. In their defense, however, in the radio plays and in the most recent episode, she has become considerably more likable.

    download the radio play

I am downloading the radio play as we speak using ISOHUNT it is a great site. I use it to access all the great sci-fi/gay themed programming from the UK usually in less than 24hrs after it airs in the UK and more often than not commercial free!
