A family friendly website lets parents rate films for themselves

Considering my interests in groups that seek out "family friendly" entertainment without the finger-wagging and condemnation associated with the term, I was happy to learn about Kids-In-Mind.com. The site serves as a film guide for parents, but leaves it up to parents to judge what kind of content is appropriate for themselves. According to the site's about page, the site's goal is solely to inform parents about a film's content, creating what they call "Movie ratings that actually work":

It's like a food labeling system which tells you what a food item contains. That's it. We make no judgments about what is good or bad or anything else. Indeed, we do not "condemn," "critique" or "criticize" movies. And we don't "praise" or "recommend" movies either. We advance no "beliefs" and we do not "preach" anything. We are not affiliated with any political party, any cultural or religious group, or any ideology. The only thing we advocate is responsible, engaged parenting...
Parents should seek out sites like ours and make decisions based on objective information about content. Our position is that no organization should be involved in arbitrating who should or shouldn't see a film (especially one as closely involved with Hollywood as the MPAA).

To some degree, the site errs on the sides of caution to an almost-hysterical level. Their Brokeback Mountain coldly details the film's sexual content. Still, the review judges gay and straight sexuality equally, something you won't get from the MPAA. Looking for a gay-themed film with very little sex, I eventually found their review of The Birdcage and the site's worst objections to the film's sexuality comes from the various beach scenes and its thong-clad beachgoers.

This is a pretty pleasant discovery in contrast to that that blog rater where talking about "gays" was the hallmark of an NC-17 blog (with "topless" seen merely as only PG material). And if nothing else, it's a fun read!

    Brokeback breakdown

That breakdown of all the "sensitive" scenes in Brokeback Mountain is unintentionally hilarious.  Talk about clinical.

But cheers to them for treating all such scenes equal.

    oh canada

rogers video which is i think only in canada, (the main competitor here against blockbuster) has something like this albiet a little less detailed and without the discussion/theme stuff, on the back of most of thier new release dvds. it lists the canadian film rating, nudity/sex, drugs and booze, violence and profanity. The only new releases that dont get it are the direct to video/independent films which are not very likely to be of interest to anyone who could end up offended. an example could be the dvd for eating out 2:sloppy seconds which has a half dressed man on the front. no one rents that hopin for family fun...... i think this kind of thing should be more common place. and also our rating system is more lenient on sex and queer stuff in general.

hey hey MPAA how many films did u censor today?

    More Canada

Also if a cut of a movie comes out on DVD that was not the original theatrical version it shows as 'Unrated'.  Gotta love Canada, eh?
