Guess who's coming to Wisteria Lane?

Earlier this week we asked you if you're at all excited about the upcoming "five year gap" season of Desperate Housewives. With Gale Harold joining the cast and most of the women of Wisteria Lane taking a new direction in life, the show is hoping for a creative revival. It turns out there just may be another reason to get excited over Marc Cherry's campy soap once more.

According to OK! magazine (I do love the names Brits come up for their celebrity mags) the fabulous Lily Tomlin will be joining the Desperate Housewives cast this season.

La Tomlin can even rock a protest sign

The OK! scoop makes it sounds like Tomlin's character will be involved in some sort of medical mystery, which has me pretty excited. I might have found most of season three pretty dull, but the mystery involving Valerie Mahaffey and Dixie Carter completely made me forget all my frustrations with the show.

I've been feeling cautiously optimistic about the time jump; my problem with Desperate Housewives has been that the stories not involving Bree have all felt very repetitive, with characters repeating the same mistakes over and over without learning. The time jump could fix that problem... but now I've got something else to look forward to.

Does Tomlin's rumored role get you more interested in the upcoming Desperate Housewives season? For those of you feeling cynical about revisiting Wisteria Lane, does this change that sentiment?

In that Mrs. Judith Beasley was the original Desperate Housewife

it's high time Marc Cherry thought of bringing her on board.

LONG to see Lily do a scene with Harriet Harris.

I was just thinking about Judith Beasley yesterday

Future epitaph: "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

Remember the tour-de-force scene where Tomlin-as-Judith is doing the commercial for "Grrrr" detergent, and finds lipstick on her husband's shirt, and continues through the commercial as she grows progressively more and more enraged?  Desperate housewife, indeed!  (When last we saw Judith in "The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe," she was selling female pleasure products & toys:"...or this one with a built-in silencer for the woman on the go.")

    Oh One More Thing

Just found out these on wikipedia. Is this information correct?Lily Tomlin is openly gay and has a partner?Since I`m a new (non-american) fan of hers,I hope it`s understandable that I`ve never heard of this before.

    Personal life

Before declaring her sexuality, Tomlin was involved in feminist and homosexual-friendly film productions, and would often refer to her partner Jane Wagner. On her 1975 album Modern Scream she mocked straight actors who make a point of distancing themselves from their homosexual characters; answering the pseudo-interview question, How did it feel to play a heterosexual? she replied, I've seen these women all my life, I know how they walk, I know how they talk ... . Her narration of the documentary The Celluloid Closet in 1995, a film examining Hollywood's portrayals of homosexuals, was also largely considered a nod to the open secret of her orientation.

Since you're a new fan of Lily Tomlin's, may I suggest you rent "The Search For Sign of Intelligent Life in the Universe"?  (And now that I think of it, why didn't I suggest that film as one of the 'Top 50' Gay Movies?). It's a pretty good example of how talented both Lily and Jane Wagner are.

The stage version was much better (IMO) than the movie because it was filmed with real costumes, wigs/make-up and locations. Unfortunately by adding so much 'reality' Tomlin's strong acting abilities were lost. (Because she is such an excellent mime and actress, she was able to make you see the many things that weren't physically onstage - even things like a really bad haircut!)

The script isstill very good, though!

    One personal problem

Much as I love Lily Tomlin, I find it inordinately hard (when she isn't doing broad sketch comedy) to accept her as anyone but Lily Tomlin.  It's not her fault, let me hasten to say.  Even in a well written character acted perfectly (like her part in "The West Wing") I keep saying "that's Lily."  However, I'm always glad to see her.

    Nothing against Lily...

...but I think I'm more exctied about Gale Harold joining the cast!
